Royal Prince Aims for Starring Role in DeMille

Steve Landers Racing’s Royal Prince (Cairo Prince) is the 7-2 morning-line favorite in the GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. at Del Mar Sunday. The Brad Cox trainee came home first at Kentucky Downs Sept. 7, but with the gates sprung before the full field was loaded, the race was determined to be a non-wagering event. The gray colt, a half-brother to last year’s champion juvenile filly British Idiom (Flashback), officially broke his maiden going 1 1/16 miles over the turf at Keeneland Oct. 2. Cutting back to a mile Sunday, the juvenile could give Cox his second graded win of the weekend at Del Mar following Arklow (Arch)’s score in Friday’s GII Hollywood Turf Cup.

Also invading from the East for the holiday weekend, trainer Graham Motion sends out Madaket Stables’ Wootton Asset (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). A two-time winner in his native France over the summer, the dark bay colt missed by just a nose when second in the Oct. 3 Laurel Futurity in his stateside debut. He was most recently fourth in the Oct. 31 Awad S. at Belmont Park.

Representing the home team is Legacy Ranch’s Big Fish (Mr. Big), who is two-for-two over the DeMille’s course and trip after a maiden score there Aug. 21 and a one-length tally in the Sept. 7 Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. He is returning to the oceanside oval after a fifth-place effort in the Oct. 4 Zuma Beach S. at Santa Anita and he turned in a bullet five-furlong work in :59 3/5 over the Del Mar course Nov. 22.

FTBOA Announces Bonuses for 13 Gulfstream Stakes

Thirteen stakes races during Gulfstream Park’s Championship Meet, including the GI Florida Derby, GII Fountain of Youth S., GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, GIII Fred W. Hooper S. and Sunshine Millions, will have bonuses for Florida-breds properly registered with the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association (FTBOA).

A total of $400,000 in bonus money will be distributed throughout the meet beginning Jan. 9 with the GIII Tropical Turf. While a dozen of the races will have a $25,000 ‘win only’ bonus, the $800,000 Florida Derby will have $100,000 in Florida-bred distributive purse supplement funds available with 70% to a registered Florida-bred winner, 20% for a second-place finish and 10% for a third-place finish.

China Horse Club and WinStar Farm’s EDITOR IN CHIEF (Curlin), a $650,000 FTSAUG yearling, makes his first trip to the post for trainer Bob Baffert. The gray colt is out of the unraced Tapas (Tapit), who is a half-sister to MGSW Justwhistledixie (Dixie Union), dam of graded winners New Year’s Day (Street Cry {Ire}) and Mohaymen (Tapit). China Horse Club purchased Tapas for $1.3 million at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton November sale. C R K Stable’s Parnelli (Quality Road) has opened his career with runner-up efforts behind highly accomplished foes, debuting with a second behind ‘TDN Rising Star’ Superman Shaq (Shackleford) at Del Mar Sept. 6, behind GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) at Santa Anita Oct. 2, and behind $1-million yearling Spielberg (Union Rags) at this track and trip Nov. 1.
