What’s In A Name: Iron Men of Metz

IRON MEN OF METZ (Added Edge) won on this side of the Atlantic at Mahoning Valley, and ARNOUL OF METZ (Kyllachy {GB}) won at “caput mundi” Wolverhampton in England. The “Iron Men of Metz” is the nickname given to the 95th Infantry Division of the US Army, who battled the Germans in WW2 to liberate and defend the French town in November 1944, through heavy and costly fighting, sometimes in house-to-house fashion–while Arnoul (582-645) was the mythical bishop of Metz in the dark middle ages of Merovingian times–and also an ancestor to the one and only Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne.

Pegasus World Cup Day Noms Close Jan. 10

Nominations for five graded stakes to be run Saturday, Jan. 23 on Pegasus World Cup Invitational Day at Gulfstream Park will close Sunday, Jan. 10.

The five graded races are: $200,000 GII Inside Information S. – Fillies & Mares, 4yo/up, Seven Furlongs; $150,000 GIII W. L. McKnight S., 4yo/up, 1 1/2 Miles Turf; $125,000 Fred W. Annual TCA Stallion Season Auction Begins

The 31st annual Thoroughbred Charities of America Stallion Season Auction, the largest for the organization, is open for bidding. Bidding on over 200 stallion seasons from 14 states kicked off on www.starquine.com and will continue through Jan. 8 with a staggered ending times beginning at 4:30 p.m. EST. Seasons available in the online auction include Gun Runner, Ghostzapper, Palace Malice, Liam’s Map, More Than Ready, Speightstown, and many more. View all seasons here.

In addition to the online auction, a live auction of select seasons will be held Tuesday, Jan. 12 in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion after the close of book one, session two of the January sale. Select seasons to Blame, Constitution, Curlin, Game Winner, Laoban, Nyquist (with a 2022 breed back), and Quality Road will be offered. To bid on select seasons, bidders or their authorized agents may bid in person at Keeneland, or they may contact TCA by emailing ecrady@tca.org or calling (859) 276-4989 to arrange telephone or online bidding.

A silent auction of non-season items including halters worn by Enable and Tapit, a John Deere X330 lawn tractor, equine air transportation aboard a Tex Sutton flight, vanning from Sallee and Brook Ledge is also currently underway. The silent auction includes over 70 items with a complete list of items available here.

Robsham Estate Donates $500,000 to New Vocations Endowment Fund

The estate of Joyce and Paul Robsham donated $500,000 to the New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program’s endowment fund. The Robshams, as two of the founding supporters of New Vocations, were instrumental in creating the endowment fund. New Vocations was founded in 1992 and has rehomed over 7,500 horses to date. Paul Robsham passed away in 2004, while Joyce Robsham died in 2018.

“Paul was a visionary,” said Dot Morgan, executive director of New Vocations. “He saw the need for racehorse aftercare options long before it was recognized by the industry. He had a vision of New Vocations growing into a first-class charity that would serve racing nationally into perpetuity. The Robshams’ vision and commitment to racehorse aftercare is truly a gift that will ultimately provide sustainability to our program allowing us to serve more horses in the years to come.”

All of the live fundraising events normally held by New Vocations had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
