Six Go Postward in Delayed San Marcos

A field of six, led by Acclimate (Acclamation) and Masteroffoxhounds (War Front), goes postward in the GII San Marcos S. Saturday at Santa Anita. The 1 1/4-mile turf race had originally been scheduled for Jan. 30, but was pushed back to avoid the winter rainstorm which hit Arcadia a week ago.

Rockingham Ranch's Masteroffoxhounds will be making his third stateside appearance in the San Marcos. The bay colt, a maiden winner in Ireland last summer, was seventh going one mile in his U.S. debut last November. He powered home to a 4 1/4-length victory in a 1 3/8-mile optional claimer at Del Mar Nov. 28 in his most recent start.

Acclimate won the 2019 GIII San Juan Capistrano S. and GII Del Mar H. and was second over the San Marcos course and distance in that year's GII John Henry Turf Classic. He made only one start in 2020, finishing fourth in the Nov. 27 GII Hollywood Turf Cup, and he was third as the 9-5 favorite in his 2021 debut while facing fellow Cal-breds in the nine-furlong Unusual Heat Turf Classic S. Jan. 16.

“It's a rather quick comeback for Acclimate, but I had this race in the back of my mind for him,” said trainer Phil D'Amato. “It was hard to pass up $200 grand against Cal-breds [in the Unusual Heat], but at the same he's coming back at a distance he prefers [in the San Marcos]. I always had this race planned for him, if he came out of the Unusual Heat in good shape, and he really has, so we'll look to wheel him back going a mile and a quarter.”

D'Amato will also saddle Salvator Mundi (Artie Schiller) in the San Marcos. Claimed for $40,000 at Keeneland in September of 2019 has won twice in seven starts since for D'Amato. The 5-year-old gelding was most recently third in a one-mile optional claimer at Santa Anita Jan. 8 and he will be making his third stakes appearance Saturday.

“He's just kind of learning where he needs to be placed to be most effective,” D'Amato said of Salvator Mundi, who stalked the pace before weakening to finish sixth in the GII John Henry Turf Classic last September. “I think he merits another chance at a 1 1/4 miles for sure, the way he's come out of that race.”

Kalypso Looks to Double Up in Las Virgenes

David Bernsen, LLC and Rockingham Ranch's Kalypso (Brody's Cause) will look for a second straight score when she goes postward against four foes in the one-mile GIII Las Virgenes S. at Santa Anita Saturday. The chestnut filly won the six-furlong Anoakia S. in Arcadia last October and was second when stretched to 1 1/16 miles in the Dec. 5 GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos. Cut back to seven furlongs, the Bob Baffert trainee scored by 1 3/4 lengths in the Jan. 3 GII Santa Ynez S.

Richard Mandella sends out impressive maiden winner Moonlight d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro), who scored by three lengths in her first try at two turns at Los Alamitos Dec. 13. Second in that one-mile event was Frosteria (Frosted), who returned to be second again in the Santa Ynez.

Third in that Dec. 13 Los Al maiden was debuting Moraz (Empire Maker). The Don Alberto homebred returned to air by 11 lengths in a one-mile special weight at Santa Anita Jan. 8.

Concert Tour Steps Up in San Vicente

Gary and Mary West's homebred Concert Tour (Street Sense), tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following an effortless debut victory, steps right up to graded stakes company in the seven-furlong GII San Vicente S. at Santa Anita Saturday. The Bob Baffert trainee wired the field by 3 1/2 lengths while going six furlongs at Santa Anita Jan. 15 and looks like he'll relish added distance.

Baffert, who has won the San Vicente a record 10 times, also sends out Freedom Fighter (Violence). The dark bay colt just held on after setting the pace in his five-furlong bow at Del Mar, but has not been seen since that Aug. 1 effort. He returns to action with a pair of bullet works under his belt, most recently a four-furlong drill in :46 4/5 (1/51) at Santa Anita Monday.

“Going seven-eighths is a tough distance,” Baffert said, “but he's quick and he's had good works. He broke his maiden first out and then we had to back off him, but he's doing well.”

Another entering the San Vicente off an impressive debut win is The Chosen Vron (Vronsky). Trained by Eric Kruljac, the chestnut gelding defeated state-bred foes by 6 3/4 lengths in his 6 1/2-furlong unveiling at Santa Anita Dec. 27.

Goodall Claims Elusive NHC Tour Title

For years a top player on the National Horseplayers' Championship (NHC) tour, Sally Goodall claimed her first NHC title in 2020, earning 22,330 points to just edge Dylan Donnelly. Goodall's early-season surge–she had secured two spots in the NHC by March–and consistency throughout 2020 saw her outfinish Donnelly, a five-time contest winner, by just 54 points.

Goodall's husband Richard won the NHC title in 2008 and was inducted to the NHC Hall of Fame last February. The couple freely admits that they schedule their year around the NHC, held annually in Las Vegas.

“We focus on NHC contests every day,” Sally Goodall said. “Since I met my husband, he took me to the racetrack and we play the horses for fun. He has mentored me and taught me very well how to bet on horses for the contests. We have fun and we've gotten lucky too.”

For her efforts, Goodall took home the $100,000 first-place prize, a 2022 NHC seat and the chance to play for an additional $5 million at this year's NHC, to be held at Bally's on the Las Vegas Strip Aug. 27-29.
