Nov. 5 Insights: Half to Grade I Winner Big World Debuts in Florida

1st-AQU, $85k, Msw, 2yo, f, 6fT, 12:20p.m. ET
The lone firster in the field, Team Spoor's CURLIN'S GIRL (Curlin) will open her tab in this maiden baby dash on the back of a string of bullet works. Starting Oct. 7, when she went five furlongs in 1:01.88, she flashed speed Oct. 14 going five panels in :59.44 (1/6); Oct. 23 in company with $475,000 KEESEP grad Shop Lifting (Into Mischief)–who ran second by a head on her debut at Saratoga to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies victress Just F Y I (Justify)–in  1:01.22 (1/8); and most recently Oct. 31 in company with maiden winner Vino Rouge (Vino Rosso) when the pair went four furlongs in :47.69. Trained by Anthony Dutrow, Curlin's Girl hails from the female family of MGSW Purely Cozzene; GISP Erica's Smile; and MGSP Tigre Di Slugo (Smiling Tiger). TJCIS PPs.

5th-GP, $50k, Msw, 2yo, f, 1m 70 AWT, 2:49p.m. ET
On the rail and carrying the St Elias Stable colors, JOYFUL LASS (War Front) makes her career debut going long over the synthetic track. The half-sister to GISW Big World (Custom for Carlos) and that one's full-sister SP Gracida, she also has three other winning siblings. Joyful Lass was a $300,000 KEESEPT pick up from breeders KatieRich Farms, and is trained by Todd Pletcher.

To her outside is Bass homebred and stablemate Ravenna (Quality Road). Out of an unraced half-sister to GISW Stormello (Stormy Atlantic) and his full-sibling GSW My Best Brother, her dam Italia can also claim GISP Cherry Lodge (Bernardini), that one's full-sibling GSW Gala Award; GSP Greatest Game (Giant's Causeway) and the dam of Canadian champion 2-year-old filly GSW Curlin's Voyage (Curlin) as a half-relation. This is a busy, international female family with group or graded runners in Japan, England, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and the UAE as well as black-type earners in France and Hong Kong. MGSW The Pamplemousse (Kafwain) makes an appearance as well. TJCIS PPs.

Webslinger A Marvel On Breeders’ Cup Undercard, Woodbine Cards Saturday Graded Races Too

Whether digital or the old school paper variety, it is safe to say that most of the forms will be turned to the World Championship races. However, it should be noted that Saturday does sport some graded stakes action that you will not want to miss from both Santa Anita Park and Woodbine Racetrack.

'The Great Race Place' card gets the Breeders' Cup engines warmed with the GII Twilight Derby for 3-year-olds over the turf. If you are interested in how the course sets up for what's to come, then this nine furlong event should provide some interesting indicators.

Probably tops on many a list as he cannonballs in from the East Coast is DJ Stable's Webslinger (Constitution). The bay gelding trained by Mark Casse has had a banner campaign this year with highlights coming when he won the GII American Turf S. on the Derby undercard and in his last race when he lost by a head in the GI Saratoga Derby Aug. 5. His regular rider Javier Castellano is aboard and you can bet that this one will sense the wire late in the game.

Also present is the Charlie Appleby trainee Silver Knott (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). The first-time gelding developed some solid class after he ran second in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and he will be one to watch if William Buick can find a way to get him into a free running lane.

An intriguing entry here is the presence of GI Kentucky Derby alum Reincarnate (Good Magic). Out of a Scat Daddy mare with strong Tapeta and turf experience, the Bob Baffert trainee actually began his juvenile career on the grass when he finished second at both Del Mar and Santa Anita. The gray colt's victory in the GIII Sham S. set him on the dirt road, but he returns to what might be his surface of choice.

The graded action doesn't end there because Woodbine has a pair of 2-year-old races for males and females. First up are the colts going 1 1/16th on the Tapeta in the GIII Grey S. Certainly Piper's Factor (The Factor) appears to be incredibly fleet of foot, especially if he can replicate the 82 Beyer that he posted when he broke his maiden by two lengths at second asking in Toronto Sept. 10.

Others that will press the pace include Pipit (Quality Road), who dead heated for second Oct. 8 in the Algonquin S. at Woodbine, and one of two Barbara Minshall trainees led by Tunechi (Outwork), who finished fourth in the GI Summer S. behind Breeders' Cup bound Carson's Run (Cupid).

“I think two turns is right up his alley,” said Minshall of Tunechi who was bred in Kentucky by Fred Hertrich III and John Fielding. “He definitely acted like a two-turn horse from the day I got him. He's not mean, but you just have to watch yourself around him because he's a big, good-feeling colt.”

Switching over to the fillies who are also traveling the same distance, the GIII Mazarine S. could very well go to Tripolina (Constitution), who is a deserving favorite after she won the Display S. Oct. 15 at Woodbine against the boys in her second career start.

Standing in her way are the second and third place runners from the Oct. 15 running of the Glorious Song S. in Mystic Lake (Mo Town) for Saffie Joseph and Witwatersrand (Connect) for Mark Casse.

Saturday’s Insights: Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Topper ‘Gunning’ For Debut Score

7th-AQU, $85K, Msw, 2yo, 1m, post time: 3:20 p.m.
While the focus of the Thoroughbred world Saturday afternoon will rightly be on Santa Anita, SIERRA LEONE (Gun Runner), the $2.3-million topper out of the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, provides ample reason to click over to the Aqueduct feed between the running of the Filly and Mare Turf and Filly and Mare Sprint. The Mar. 31 foal was bred by Debby Oxley and is a son of her homebred 2017 GI Darley Alcibiades S. romper Heavenly Love (Malibu Moon). There was activity in the colt's second dam just Friday, when Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}), a 2-year-old son of Heavenly Love's GII Santa Ynez S.-winning half-sister Forever Darling (Congrats), took out the Listed JBC Nisai Yushun at Mombetsu Racecourse in Japan. The Grade I-winning third dam Roamin Rachel (Mining) produced Japanese Horse of the Year Zenno Rob Roy (Jpn) (Sunday Silence). Among the opposition is fellow firster and $600,000 Keeneland September grad Tuscan Gold (Medaglia d'Oro), whose dam Valdorna (Curlin) was second in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and won the 2018 GIII Doubledogdare S. JUST JULES (Justify), a $1.05-million KEESEP yearling, is the latest to the races from the Grade II-placed juvenile Fully Living (Unbridled's Song), already the dam of MGSP Untreated (Nyquist) and Ballet Dancing (Medaglia d'Oro), last-out winner of the grassy GIII Santa Ana S. at Santa Anita. Fully Living is a half-sister to this year's GIII Canadian Derby victor Abeliefinthislivin (Arrogate, while champion and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Halfbridled (Unbridled) appears in the third dam. A $600,000 FTSAUG purchase, Hollywood Dream (Uncle Mo) is out of Miss Hollywood (Malibu Moon), a stakes-winning daughter of George Krikorian's MGISW Hollywood Story (Wild Rush), whose son Honor A. P. (Honor Code) won the 2020 GI Santa Anita Derby. Public Assembly (More Than Ready), a $100,000 in-utero purchase at KEENOV in 2020 before fetching $300,000 at KEESEP, is out of a full-sister to MGSW Csaba (Kitten's Joy) and SW & GISP Kitten's Queen. 7th-CD, $120K, Msw, 2yo, 7f, 4:55 p.m. ET
GIVE ME A REASON (Justify) draws the rail for this first trip to the races and is out of the Grade I-winner and outstanding producer Dream of Summer (Siberian Summer), whose offspring include Grade I-winning juvenile Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway), MGSW and GI Belmont S. runner-up Destin (Giant's Causeway), GISW Vexatious (Giant's Causeway) and GSP Summer Promise (Uncle Mo). Give Me a Reason cost $500,000 at Keeneland last fall. Godolphin's Knightsbridge (Nyquist), a homebred half-brother to GISW Speaker's Corner (Street Sense), is out of an unraced daughter of 2006 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff upsetter Round Pond (Awesome Again). Breeders’ Cup 40: From Accelerate to Zenyatta

The Breeders' Cup 40 project began as a special tribute looking back at 40 individual winners in the 40 days leading up to the 40th anniversary of racing's championship day, but it grew into more than that. Of course, it's beyond wonderful to reawaken the excitement of those championship wins and revisit these amazing horses today through brand-new photos. We thought we would simply catch up with these Breeders' Cup horses through some gorgeous images, but it really ended up as a celebration of how these living champions have impacted the lives of the people who care for them.

What we have learned is that although each race each year has just one winner–except for that dead heat in the 2003 Turf–so many people go along for the ride.

It's impossible to count how many people each individual horse touches, whether it's someone like Vicky Van Camp at Darley who sneaks Midshipman apple slices or Price Bell at Mill Ridge who shared how much a winner inspired a tour guest from his childhood cancer hospital bed or Larry McGinnis at WinStar whose affection for Tiznow is palpable or Veronica Reed at Three Chimneys who so eloquently said Gun Runner “reminds us that this industry is about the horse.”

What became clear throughout this project is it's not just the public faces associated with these horses when they win the Breeders' Cup who are impacted. It's all the people ever associated with a Breeders' Cup winner, from the foaling person who helps pull them out of their dam to the exercise rider on the racetrack to the grooms and handlers and watchmen and administrative staff who care for them today and even their fans.

Often we have fixed images in our minds of these horses during their racing days, when they're at peak fitness, in racing shape, and young and fiery. But as the years pass, the stallions fill out, the broodmares get permanent bellies, the grays become white, and quiet time on the farm often mellows even the fiercest of competitors. Knowing nothing but a lifetime of top care, these horses positively glow with good health, the assurance of having every need met, and the confidence they are champions.

What struck us as we saw each horse and spoke with their connections is the love and adoration each one has inspired. It is often said that 'a rising tide lifts all boats.' That's what these Breeders' Cup-winning horses are, an unstoppable swell that elevates everyone around them. This 40 years and 40 days of Breeders' Cup winners project may have started as a way to celebrate Breeders' Cup horses, but it's also about how the lives of all the people connected with a Breeders' Cup winner are impacted by these remarkable horses. We've seen that in the memories connections have shared with us that we've published alongside their photos and we can see that in the pride their handlers take when presenting them for photos.

We're thrilled we were able to showcase more than 40 former Breeders' Cup winners in the TDN in the 40 days leading up to this year's event. It was through the lens of photographer Sarah Andrew that we all got the privilege of seeing this tremendous collection of Breeders' Cup winners as they appear today. We hope you've enjoyed seeing them as much as we've enjoyed sharing them.

More Breeders' Cup winners will be added to racing's annals this year. In the meantime, as we appreciate these magnificent athletes, may they also remind us of the hard-working people behind them and how lucky we all are to love these horses and this sport.
