2024 Maryland Thoroughbred Career Program Dates Announced

The 2024 Maryland Thoroughbred Career Program (MTCP) has been scheduled for June 3-7, according to the Maryland Horse Foundation. The online application can be completed by Apr. 19. Interviews will take place in the two weeks after the application deadline and selected participants will be notified in early May.

“The Maryland Thoroughbred Career Program offers a great opportunity to see behind the scenes in the various components of the industry from reproduction to racetrack operations,” said Cricket Goodall, Executive Director. “We hope to show these young people that love horses that you can make a career out of that passion.”

Graduates of the MTCP are eligible to apply for Career Development Funds, one-time funding that can be used to further career pursuits within two years after the program ends.

Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital will conduct its upcoming annual Client Education Seminar, catering to professionals and enthusiasts in the equine industry, Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at the Fasig Tipton Sales Pavilion in Lexington, KY. Registration is free and open to the public.

Now in its 37th year, the Rood & Riddle Client Education Seminar remains committed to delivering comprehensive, evidence-based medical insights tailored to the equine community.

The seminar lineup features a range of speakers and topics covering key areas of equine healthcare. Dr. Katie Garrett will discuss Diagnostic Imaging Options, while Dr. Daniel Devis will shed light on Laser Therapy and What to Expect. Dr. Charlie Scoggin provides an exclusive look inside the Rood & Riddle In Vitro Fertilization Lab, and Krista Lea, UK Forage Extension Program, shares expertise on Mitigation Strategies for Tall Fescue in the Broodmare.

Kingman Colt Graduates at Gulfstream

KING JULIEN (c, 3, Kingman {GB}–Deer Valley {SW, $180,910}, by Speightstown) received some support at 5-1 while debuting for trainer Brian Lynch in a 5 1/2-furlong test over the Saratoga sod last August, but faded to finish a well-beaten seventh. Sent off the 2-1 second choice while getting blinkers on for his off-turf Tapeta debut, the dark bay prompted favored Bourbon Boss (Street Boss) through a snappy opening quarter in :21.78. Inching into the lead approaching the far turn, the colt maintained the tempo turning for home, dispensed of the pesky Bourbon Boss in the stretch and came home a comfortable 2 1/4-length winner. Having failed to produce a live foal over the past two seasons, Deer Valley was bred to Good Magic in 2023. She is a half-sister to Grade I-winning Crisp (El Corredor), who in turn is the dam of Japanese Derby (Dirt) victor Danon Pharoah (American Pharoah). Sunday Insights: Pair Of Pletcher Firsters Do Battle On The Gulfstream Grass

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has a pair of newly-minted 3-year-old fillies heading to the post for their debuts over the turf in the Sunday finale in Hallandale.

First, EL MEGEETH (Constitution) makes her first start for Shadwell Stable. Bred by Three Chimneys, the $750,000 Keeneland September purchase is out of Amour d'Ete (Tiznow), who Borges Torrealba Holdings acquired as the third topper at the same sale back in 2013 for $1.75 million. Her most notable produce is GI Preakness S. champ Early Voting (Gun Runner).

Second dam and Canadian 2-year-old champion Silken Cat (Storm Cat) also produced Amour d'Ete's full-sister, MGSW Irap, plus recently deceased sire of sires Speightstown (Gone West) and the dam of G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 victor Capezzano (Bernardini).

Drawn to the extreme outside is the other half of Pletcher's uncoupled entry–Lady Madonna (War Front). A $675,000 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale buy for Robert and Lawana Low, the SF Bloodstock bred filly is out of GI Central Bank Ashland S. heroine Rosalind (Broken Vow). She had a 2-year-old colt by Twirling Candy sell to Willie Browne for $200,000 at the Keeneland September Sale and sent to Ireland, and a yearling filly by Tapit go for $450,000 to Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds at Keeneland's November Sale.
