Saturday’s Racing Insights: $1.25M Constitution Colt Set For Juvenile Debut At Del Mar

As the summer winds down, there is still more than enough time for juvenile first timers to make their debut. At Del Mar, $1.25-million Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale buy MC VAY (Constitution) is set for his inaugural trip. Out of Dothraki Sea (Union Rags), who counts both GISW Dixie Chatter (Dixie Union) and GSW Rumor (Indian Charlie) as half-siblings, the dark bay colt is trained by John Shirreffs and will be ridden by Mike Smith.

Also entered is $250,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale grad and $675,000 OBS April Sale purchase Arthur (Uncle Mo). Second dam SW Star of Goshen (Lord At War), who is a half-sister to MGSW Powis Castle (Rare Brick), is responsible for GI Santa Anita Derby champ and runner-up in the GI Kentucky Derby Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker). Shifting to the Saratoga grass, Zverev (Oscar Performance) makes his first start after bringing $170,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale before fetching $330,000 at this year's OBS April Sale. The Cherie DeVaux trainee with Ricardo Santana up, is out of MGISW Balance (Thunder Gulch), who is a half-sister to Horse of the Year Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}) and SW Where's Bailey (Aljabr)–dam to two-time GIII Yellow Ribbon H. heroine She's Not Here (Street Cry {Ire}) and her son, GSP Talk of the Nation (Quality Road).

Trained by Chad Brown and with Manny Franco in the irons, another interesting entrant here is $220,000 Keeneland September Sale graduate Walley World (More Than Ready). His dam Forced Family Fun (Uncle Mo), a half-sister to MGSP Cat Burglar (Unbridled's Song), were both produced by Be My Prospect (Forest Wildcat)–half-sister to MGSP Away (Dixieland Band), the dam of MGSW Eight Belles (Unbridled's Song). 7th-SAR, $136K, Msw, 2yo, 7f, 4:00 p.m.
Over on the Spa main, Justifiably So (Justify), a $375,000 Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale purchase, is related to race six's Walley World in that he is out of that runner's second dam, Be My Prospect. The juvenile debuts for Nick Zito with Ricardo Santana at the controls.

Trainer Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado team with Godolphin's well-bred Jefferson Street (Street Sense). Out of an extended female family which includes first-crop sire MGISP Solomini (Curlin), the dark bay colt's dam Apiary (Bernardini) is a full-sister to GIII Go For Wand S. hero Indulgent and a half-sister to MGISW Frosted (Tapit). All are out of MGSW Fast Cookie (Deputy Minister), who is a half to Champion 2-year-old colt Midshipman (Unbridled's Song). TJCIS PPS

ECORO NEO (c, 2, Bernardini–Smoke Signals, by Street Sense), a $110,000 Keeneland September acquisition last fall, breezed an eighth of a mile in a slick :9 4/5 and was hammered down to trainer Hideyuki Mori for $300,000 at OBS this past March. The Apr. 19 foal is a half-brother to MSP Smokie Eyes (Nyquist) and is out of a Grade III-placed daughter of Unspoken Word (Catienus), a three-time stakes winner and runner-up in the 2007 GI La Brea S. A $120,000 KEESEP purchase, the dark bay is out of a daughter of the late She's a Winner, whose notable produce include GISW Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat), MGSW Lord of the Game (Saint Ballado), GSW Dramedy (Distorted Humor) and SW Sonoma Cat (Storm Cat). MAPLE GANG (c, 2, War Front–Crimson Maple, by Rahy) was well-beaten on his nine-furlong turf debut, but cut back to a dirt sprint to graduate at second asking July 30 (video, SC 4). A half-brother to five-time stakes winner Goldwood (Medaglia d'Oro), the $200,000 KEESEP yearling is out of a daughter of the great Maplejinsky (Nijinsky II), the dam of the legendary Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and granddam of MGISW Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat) and GSW Tale of Silence (Tale of the Cat). Friday’s Racing Insights: Miss Temple City’s First To Race Hits The Turf

1st-DMR, $82K, Msw, 2yo, f, 5fT, 6:00 p.m.
PERSIA (War Front), making her juvenile debut for breeder Ramona Bass and her son Perry, is the first offspring to race out of Miss Temple City (Temple City), who posted two of her three career Grade I wins against the boys. Purchased by Steve Young for $2.5 million at Fasig-Tipton November in 2017, Miss Temple City is a full-sister to GSW Pricedtoperfection, herself a $775,000 FTKNOV grad. Trained by Richard Mandella, Persia will have the services of Hector Berrios.

Also entered is SF Racing homebred Gerwig (Kitten's Joy), who counts GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint hero Bobby's Kitten and MGSW Camelot Kitten as full-brothers. SF paid $350,000 for dam Celestial Woods (Forestry) in foal to Candy Ride (Arg) at FTKNOV in 2018 The chestnut filly will be ridden by Ramon Vasquez for trainer Tim Yakteen. TJCIS PPs

Robert and Lawana Low import Irish Gent (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) heads to the post in Saratoga's lidlifter, who they purchased at the Goffs September Yearling Sale for $479,645 after he sold as weanling for $147,155 at Goffs the previous November. The dark bay is the first to race for dam Indigo Butterfly (Fr) (Le Harve {Ire}), a half-sister to English SW & GSP So Will I (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) and to Group 2 winner Sand Vixen (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the dam of GIII Saratoga Oaks and G2 Cape Verdi S. heroine With the Moonlight (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Tornado Road (Quality Road), a $1.15-million Keeneland September buy last year for BC Stables, debuts for D. Wayne Lukas with Tyler Gafflione in the irons. The dark bay colt's dam has produced two winners from three other foals to race, including GIII Dogwood S. victress and 'TDN Rising Star' Carribean Caper (Speightstown). Back out at Del Mar, another first to the races homebred will be making her debut in Amerman Racing's Smell the Coffee (Arrogate). Produced by GI Longines Just a Game S. heroine Coffee Clique (Medaglia d'Oro), who is a half-sister to MGSW Admission Office (Point of Entry), the David Hofmans trainee will be ridden by Ramon Vazquez. Ben Perkins Sr. Passes Away at 89

Ben Perkins, Sr., a fixture as a trainer on the New Jersey Thoroughbred racing circuit since 1958 whose 854 career winners included 1981 Haskell Invitational winner Five Star Flight, has passed away at the age of 89. Funeral services are pending.

Perkins, Sr. took out his trainer's license in 1958, the same year he recorded his first career victory at Monmouth Park. He also trained at Garden State Park, Atlantic City Race Course and the Meadowlands before his retirement in 1999. Following his retirement from training, he set up and managed several racing partnerships and stables well into his 80s.

He trained 11 graded stakes winners, with Five Star Flight winning the 1981 Haskell by five lengths over heavily-favored Lord Avie. With career earnings over $13 million, Perkins Sr. also was responsible for Grade I winner Conveyor, who captured the 1995 Meadowlands Cup.

Monmouth Park honored Perkins, Sr., with the track's prestigious Virgil “Buddy” Raines Distinguished Achievement Award in 2007.

Perkins, Sr., is survived by his wife, Geraldine; son Ben Perkins, Jr.; daughter Pinky, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
