Brisnet.com Triple Crown Throwdown: Belmont Stakes

Ed DeRosa of Brisnet.com takes on TDN’s Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato as they handicap Triple Crown prep races plus the big three races themselves. The three will make $100 Win/Place bets in the preps and $200 Win/Place bets in the Belmont, Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Highest bankroll at the end wins.

DeRosa – Runhappy Santa Anita Derby ResultHonor A. P. got the money as the 2-1 second choice. Bankroll: $3215.

GI Belmont S. – In retrospect, Tiz the Law paying around $5 in his last two starts were gifts of epic proportions. He is the class (lone Grade I winner) and speed of this field with the added benefit of speed to sit and kick behind. I’d be more inclined to bet this horse to win by “over” a certain number of lengths than I would bet him to win if such a prop were offered. Selection: #8 Tiz the Law (6-5).

Sherack – Runhappy Santa Anita Derby Result – Well, we all picked Honor A. P. and he was only 2-1, but there aren’t many results that I’ve enjoyed more than that in recent memory. Bankroll: $2605.

GI Belmont S. – Tiz the Law is the most likely winner and should be awfully tough to beat, but I was high enough on Pneumatic going into the Matt Winn last time that I have to give him another chance. Outside post and some speed in front of him will bring out the best in this talented son of Uncle Mo. Selection: #10 Pneumatic (8-1).

DiDonato Runhappy Santa Anita Derby Result – Looks like we were all right about Honor A. P., but credit to Sherack, who’s been on the horse since he finished second on debut. Bankroll: $3465.

GI Belmont S. – I thoroughly respect Tiz the Law, but he doesn’t absolutely have to win this–there are some unexposed types who could very well step up and beat him. Max Player, Pneumatic and Dr Post were all horses I drafted for my fantasy stable on the TDN Writers’ Room Podcast, and they’ve all got tons of upside. I’ll give Dr Post a try. The Todd Pletcher-trained son of Quality Road earned a pretty solid figure when breaking his maiden sprinting in March, and overcame a less-than-perfect trip to take his stakes debut on the stretch-out last time. He’s an extremely grindy type who needs to be ridden pretty much from start to finish, but he seems to have the stamina to excel over a testing one-turn nine panels. I’ve also caught replays of a couple of his recent breezes and he seems to be training very well for this class test. Selection: #9 Dr Post (5-1).

Collusion Illusion Headlines Short Field in Lazaro Barrera

Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy) tops a five-horse renewal of the GIII Lazaro Barrera S. Saturday at Santa Anita. Opening his account with a pair of wins last summer at Del Mar, including the GII Best Pal S., the bay was pulled up and walked off in the GI American Pharoah S. when trying two turns at Santa Anita Sept. 27. Cut back to six panels for his sophomore bow in Arcadia May 17, he scored a decisive three-length victory.

Ragtime Blues (Union Rags) represents the powerhouse barn of Bob Baffert. Runner-up to the reopposing Howbeit (Secret Circle) on debut at Los Alamitos in September, the bay graduated next out at Oaklawn Apr. 24 and followed suit with an optional claimer score in Arcadia May 25.

Alcools (Gemologist) won on debut on the synthetic at Woodbine for owner/trainer Wayne Rice last August, after which he was privately purchased by Pantofel Stable, Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber and transferred to Peter Miller. Ninth in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint S. Sept. 7, he was sixth next out sprinting on dirt at Keeneland Oct. 5 and romped by 6 3/4 lengths going two turns on the Churchill main track 22 days later.

Rounding out the field is Phantom Boss (Shackleford), winner of the GIII Bashford Manor S. last term. He was last seen finishing fourth when trying turf in the local Desrto Code S. June 6 and the aforementioned Howbeit was also fourth last time in a main track optional claimer her May 25.

Short, But Sweet Field Set for Wonder Again

A competitive field of five is set to line up Saturday for Belmont’s GIII Wonder Again S. Speaktomeofsummer (Summer Front) enters off a pair of wins and receives Lasix for the first time here. Off the board in and off-the-turf event at Monmouth in her Sept. 7 career bow, the dark bay graduated on the lawn at the Oceanport oval three weeks later. She closed out her juvenile season with a victory in Aqueduct’s Chelsey Flower S. Nov. 3 and has been working steadily towards this sophomore bow.

Robert and Lawana Low’s Sweet Melania (American Pharoah) also makes her seasonal debut here. Just missing in the P.G. Johnson S. at Saratoga last term, she made amends with a dominant score in Keeneland’s GII Jessamine S. Oct. 9 and was third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 1.

“I gave her a little time off and this seemed like a good launching spot,” Pletcher told the NYRA media department. “She’s done well. She’s grown and filled out a little bit. She’s an easy filly to train and it seems like she’s maintained her form from last fall.”

The lightly raced Selflessly (More Than Ready) kicks off her sophomore campaign here. Graduating at second asking in Belmont’s GII Miss Grillo S. Sept. 29, she was fifth in the Breeders’ Cup.

Unlike her aforementioned foes, Antoinette (Hard Spun) has made two starts this season, albeit on dirt, finishing third in both the Mar. 21 GII Fair Grounds Oaks and May 1 Gardenia S. at Oaklawn. The Godolphine homebred closed 2019 with a win in an off-the-turf renewal of Aqueduct’s Tepin S. Dec. 5, but prior to that broke her maiden on the grass in Elmont Oct. 24.

Rounding out the quintet is Highland Glory (Sky Mesa), who hails from the same barn as GI Belmont S. favorite Tiz the Law (Constitution). Earning her diploma at third asking in her first try on turf at Gulfstream Jan. 19, she captured that venue’s Sanibel Island S. next out Mar. 28 and was second last time in the Honey Ryder S. there May 2.

Invader Wages War on Pennine Ridge

Grade I winner Decorate Invader (Declaration of War) looks to secure his second straight win of the season Satuday in Belmont’s GII Pennine Ridge S. Following his second-out graduation at Saratoga in August with a win in Woodbine’s GI Summer S. in September, the bay checked in fourth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita Nov. 1. He kicked off 2020 on a winning note, rallying from last to first in Gulfstream’s one-mile Cutler Bay S.

“Decorated Invader is doing great. He’s had two very nice breezes at Belmont with Joel [Rosario] aboard and he couldn’t be doing better,” Clement told the NYRA notes team. “I think he’s a top class horse and the distance should be perfect for him.”

Should Decorated Invader find himself at the back again, he should get plenty of speed to run into here courtesy of Proven Strategies (Sky Mesa), Vanzzy (Verrazano) and Maroon Maniac (Violence). Proven Strategies, who was fourth in the Summer and sixth in the Breeders’ Cup, broke his maiden two starts after the World Championships in a state-bred test in Hallandale Mar. 4. Capturing a Florida-bred optional claimer next out Apr. 5, the dark bay was second in the English Channel S. last time May. 2.

Vanzzy enters off a win in Turfway’s Rushaway S. on synthetic and has never run on grass before, but also won Woodbine’s Display S. on synthetic.

Maroon Maniac was a close second on debut over the Tampa lawn Feb. 12 and wired the field in an off-the-turf event there Apr. 18.
