Obituary: Mary R. Odom

Mary R. Odom, widow of George P. “Maje” Odom, passed away Nov. 10 after a long illness. Odom owned Marydel Farm from 1960 until 1987, and with her husband, campaigned numerous stakes winners such as Orbiter, Waggley, Lachesis and others.

In 1964, she joined with Allaire DuPont and Anna Sasso to develop a Mid-Atlantic Nursery, the Maryland Stallion Station. In 1965 the partnership dissolved and Odom continued the project and stood Nail, Sunrise Flight and TV Commercial at the nursery before Eddie Tayler bought the facility in 1968 to make a home for Northern Dancer.

She was an avid golfer, fisherman and gardener. She is survived by four children, two of whom are in the horse business, Van Nardiello, an equine dentist; and horseman Drew Nardiello. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the WGA Caddy Scholarship Fund, founded by her father and Willie Turnesa.

Sunday’s Steeplechase of Charleston to Allow Spectators

The Steeplechase of Charleston, to be held Sunday, Nov. 15, at Stono Ferry Racetrack in Hollywood, S.C., will allow spectators and will also be streamed live via the National Steeplechase Association (NSA)’s website. Sunday’s racecard will be just one of two sanctioned steeplechase events this year to admit fans due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike flat racing, steeplechase racing does not depend on pari-mutuel wagering for purses, but instead on admissions, parking, and tailgating income.

Spectators at the Steeplechase of Charleston will be accommodated in single vehicle spots with small groups up to five permitted for tailgating. There will be double the normal number of restrooms with additional cleaning throughout. Guests must wear masks when moving away from their tailgate spots and can bring their own food and beverages. Half the usual capacity of spectators will be allowed.

More than two-thirds of the scheduled steeplechase meets have been cancelled in the U.S. this year. Sunday’s meet, consisting of five races on the card, will be just one of two to admit fans. First post is at 1 p.m. ET.

Jockey Rocco Bowen Gets Win 1,000 at Indiana Grand

Barbados native Rocco Bowen reached the 1,000th win of his riding career Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. He had stalled, going zero for 23, since getting his 999th win Nov. 4. It was a pick-up mount for trainer Tim Glyshaw in Wednesday’s ninth race that netted the milestone win. Dox Folly (Paddy O’Prado) won the Indiana-bred starter allowance by 5 1/2 lengths.

“I even changed my boots today,” said Bowen. “This sign is going straight to my mom. Thank you to everyone. It’s been such a pleasure to be here and everyone has been so welcoming. I want to thank all the agents throughout my career and all the people that have been in my corner. This is for everyone that has been supportive.”

Bowen had been sidelined by an injury sustained while riding from September, 2018, to this spring. This is his first year riding in Indiana and he ranks among the top 10 jockeys there. He has accumulated more than $11 million in purses throughout his career since 2007.

Eric Halstrom, Indiana Grand’s vice president and general manager of racing, made the winner’s circle presentation.
