Nine Declared For Saturday’s G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas

Godolphin's quest for a unique 2000 Guineas treble with three different colts is set to culminate in Saturday's €500,000 G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh, where the hot favourite Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) will face eight peers.

Drawn in stall one, which was occupied by two of the last three winners of the Classic in Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and Phoenix of Spain (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), he will start against the rail as he seeks compensation for his defeat in the Apr. 30 G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. The vibes are strong regarding the champion juvenile of 2021, who was at his most impressive when winning this track's G1 Vincent O'Brien National S.

“Native Trail heads back to the Curragh in great nick,” Charlie Appleby said. “Obviously, a repeat of his Newmarket run is going to make him the one to beat. There are some showers forecast, but good or good-to-soft ground should hopefully make it a fair playing field for everyone.”

Buckaroo Leads Owning Hill Charge…

Qatar Racing's May 2 Listed Tetrarch S. winner Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) has been given the green light by Joseph O'Brien, while Aidan O'Brien will seek a 12th renewal with Westerberg and Coolmore's May 8 G3 Amethyst S. runner-up Ivy League (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The private O'Brien Sr-Jr clash will be presaged by Friday's G3 Heider Family Stables Gallinule S., with Joseph represented by Ecurie Ama Zingteam's acquisition Hannibal Barca (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), last seen finishing fourth in Doncaster's G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy, and Ballydoyle's duo headed by the G3 Eyrefield S. third Anchorage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Lysander Dreams On the Line…

Goodwood offers a late portal to the G1 Cazoo Derby, with the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat S. featuring an entry in the June 4 Classic with some clout. Carrying the Classic-winning Highclere Thoroughbred Racing silks, the William Haggas-trained Lysander (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) scored by 8 1/2 lengths in a Newcastle novice Apr. 29 and has attracted support for the Blue Riband.

“He is a very exciting horse from what we have seen at home and we are going to have a look on Friday to see if he is a Derby horse,” Harry Herbert said. “He is a very exciting prospect. He comes with a big reputation, but we'll see. It's time to find out and then go on to the next level.”

It's Not Too Late…

Also on the Sussex Downs is the Listed William Hill Height of Fashion S., which has always acted as a last-ditch way into the Oaks, and there are two entries in the June 3 Classic engaged in the 10-furlong test. Qatar Racing's John and Thady Gosden-trained Emotion (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who was off the mark by 16 lengths in a Kempton novice May 4, could win here and theoretically go back to Epsom to face stablemate Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who had her way back in eighth in her Sandown novice romp Apr. 22. The other Epsom hope is Quantum Leap Racing' Ottilien (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who has raced mainly in France and captured a Chantilly conditions event last time Apr. 13.

“We are relying on the thunderstorms appearing for Ottilien,” trainer David Menuisier said. “We left her in the Oaks just in case, but she is very ground-dependent. She wants at least good-to-soft ground.”

Record Turnover Reached at Doncaster Spring HIT/PTP Sale

Demand for horses-in-training and point-to-pointers was strong at Goffs UK's Doncaster complex on Wednesday, which reached record turnover of £5,085,700 during the first session. Of the 180 lots through the ring, 162 sold for a 90% clearance rate. The average was £31,393 (-1.1%) just down on 2021 and the median was marginally lower at 4% (£22,000).

Leading the way among the pointers and bumper horses that made up the majority of the first session was Porthill (Ire) (Flemensfirth), who brought £250,000 from the buying duo of H. Kirk and Willie Mullins. Consigned by Colin McKeever's Loughanmore Farms, the 4-year-old gelding (lot 420) placed second on debut and is from the family of Grade 1 winner Relegate (Ire) (Flemensfirth).

Of the other six lots to make six figures, the placed Passing Well (Fr) (Coastal Path {GB}) (lot 465) was next at £185,000. From the Leighmoney Stables draft, the gelding caught the eye of Tom Malone and Jamie Snowden.

Rounding out the top three was lot 431, Myretown (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). Another consigned by Leighmoney Stables, the winning point-to-pointer and half-brother to Grade 3-placed hurdler A Fine Young Man (Ire) (Snurge) was purchased for £135,000 by Tom Malone and Lucinda Russell.

The second and final day of the Doncaster Spring HIT/PTP Sale will begin at 10 a.m. and feature the Million In Mind Dispersal.

Reach For The Moon Back At Sandown

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Thursday's Observations features The Queen's group winner Reach For The Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

 

5.16 ParisLongchamp, Listed, €55,000, 3yo, f, 9fT
RACLETTE (GB) (Frankel {GB}) lines up for this Prix Finlande on the back of a disappointing eighth in the G3 Prix de la Grotte here last month, with Andre Fabre opting to go up in trip and down in class for the daughter of Emollient (Empire Maker). Juddmonte's 'TDN Rising Star' remains a filly of great interest, especially having beaten the subsequent G3 Prix de Fontainebleau winner Welwal (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}) by four lengths on the second of her two winning juvenile starts.

 

7.15 Sandown, Listed, £52,000, 3yo, 8fT
REACH FOR THE MOON (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) makes his eagerly-awaited seasonal bow for The Queen, having carved out a reputation as one of her most exciting juveniles for some time when successful in this track's G3 Solario S. and second in the G2 Champagne S. The Gosden stable has won this Heron S. for the past three years, including with the subsequent G1 St James's Palace S. winner Without Parole (GB) (Frankel {GB}), and there will be expectation that it will extend its record but Reach For the Moon will have to be straight enough to deal with KHK Racing Ltd's 'TDN Rising Star' Akhu Najla (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the Roger Varian-trained half-brother to Galileo Gold (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}) who was so impressive at Yarmouth last month.

 

7.15 Sandown, Novice, £11,000, 3yo, 9f 209yT
FRANCESCO CLEMENTE (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) takes the second step on his career path, having won Newmarket's Wood Ditton last month and been a non-runner at Newcastle. White Birch Farm's homebred Arc and G2 King Edward VII S. entry, who is related to the high-class Islington (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and Greek Dance (Ire), hails from the John and Thady Gosden stable and meets Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's Subastar (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), the Roger Varian-trained relative of Dubawi (Ire) who was third in the Listed Newmarket S. last month.

Timmons Hoping To Crown Dream 48 Hours At Tattersalls Ireland

TATTERSALLS, Ireland–Justin Timmons revealed the heightened importance to the Dolmen Bloodstock consignment selling well at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale after he welcomed his first-born into the world in the early hours of Wednesday morning before making the dash to Barn B on the eve of what he described as the biggest sale of his year.

Dolmen Bloodstock consigned the top lot at last year's sale, a Dark Angel (Ire) colt who fetched 410,000gns, and now that there are nappies to pay for, Timmons is hoping for another profitable end to the breeze-up season.

Timmons nominated a colt by New Bay (GB) (lot 15) and fillies by Zoffany (Ire) (lot 184) and Harry Angel (Ire) (lot 119) as being the pick of Dolmen's six juveniles that will go under the hammer on Thursday and joked that, if the Harry Angel was to shoot the lights out, he may have to twist his partner Jody's arm to revisit the naming of their newborn from Harvey to Harry.

“I'm a relieved man and everything else is a bonus now,” said a visibly ecstatic Timmons after the breeze on Wednesday. “Mother and baby are doing well so I raced up here to try and pay for the nappies!

“It's our first child and Jody was helping all throughout her pregnancy. She was even riding out at the start of the pregnancy and, when she wasn't able to continue that, she was in the yard mucking out boxes. She's superwoman.”

Timmons added, “The little man is called Harvey at the minute but if the Harry Angel sells well we might have to change it to Harry. I was happy with how he breezed and, to be honest, I thought I brought a nice bunch of horses here this year so fingers crossed it works out.”

This sales season has been up and down for Dolmen Bloodstock, according to Timmons, who is quietly confident of signing off on the breeze-ups for the year with some strong results given he kept his best team for Tattersalls Ireland.

He explained, “I always try and bring a nice bunch here as it's our local sale here in Ireland and I always support it. It's one of the most important sales in our year.

“This year has been a bit of a mixed bag so far. The Craven Sale was a bit disappointing but the Guineas Sale made up for it. That's the way this game goes sometimes so hopefully we have a bit of luck tomorrow.”

Lot 15 is the only New Bay colt in the sale and was picked up by Jerry Horan at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale at Newmarket for £15,000 while the Zoffany filly, out of the listed-placed Ermine And Velvet (GB) (Nayef), was sourced at the same sale for £14,500.

Speaking about his draft, Timmons said, “The New Bay, the Zoffany and the Harry Angel are all exciting. The New Bay is a fine horse. My friend Jerry [Horan] bought him at Tattersalls last year and he's a nice horse who does everything well at home.

“I was expecting him to breeze well and he did. He's the only New Bay colt in the sale and I think he is an incredible sire. He's only going one way.”

He added, “I've always been sweet on the Zoffany. She's a good-moving filly with plenty of boot, but I think she probably wants seven furlongs or even a mile. We galloped her last week on the Curragh, I rode her myself and I was taken by the fact that she actually quickened up twice. Not many do that.

“The Harry Angel is a ball of a filly. She's a real 2-year-old type and is only going to get better as the season progresses. She's on a real upward curve. They are the three I'm looking forward to most.”

He may be surviving on minimal if any sleep but you won't hear Timmons complain. In fact, if things go to plan on Thursday, he may even have time to celebrate what has been a whirlwind 48 hours.

“I'll be nipping back to Portlaoise Hospital this evening. I can't wait to keep an eye on Mammy and the little baby and there won't be much sleep. If these sell well on Thursday, there definitely won't be any sleep, we'll have to celebrate.”

The sale, of which Layfayette (Ire) (French Navy {GB}) is a deserving poster boy, being the most successful graduate following his Group 2 victory in the Mooresbridge S. at the Curragh this season, begins at 10:30 a.m on Thursday.
