Baaeed the Star Turn in Royal Opener

Royal Ascot 2022 will kick off with the cream of the crop, as Shadwell's Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was confirmed Sunday for the meeting's opening G1 Queen Anne S.. William Haggas' unbeaten 4-year-old has six rivals to deal with as he looks to cement his place at the head of the World's Best Racehorse Rankings having got there with an emphatic return win from the re-opposing Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury May 14. It hasn't escaped anyone's attentions that he is in the race that crowned Frankel (GB) as officially the greatest 10 years ago, but connections are staying away from that discussion. “Only you lot are doing the Frankel comparison,” Haggas said. “Frankel was an outstanding horse and was brilliantly-trained, because he was difficult. This horse is not difficult. Frankel was extremely strong and powerful, whereas this horse is much easier. Whether he's as good we'll have to see, but that's up to you lot to decide, not me.”

Set For The Strip Race

Only one pound below Baaeed in the Longines-sponsored rankings on 124 is the G1 King's Stand S.-bound Nature Strip (Aus) (Nicconi {Aus}), who meets Coolmore and Westerberg's Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) in an enticing international head-to-head over five furlongs, with 16 others looking to get involved including The Queen's May 21 G2 Temple S. winner King's Lynn (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}). He is the first to represent the monarch during the Platinum Jubilee edition, but it will take serious improvement to see him upstaging the eight-times group one winner Nature Strip who looks to bring home a first Royal prize for Australia since 2012. “Nature Strip has really matured into a foolproof horse,” trainer Chris Waller said this week. “As it has worked out with him missing the last couple of Royal Ascot meetings due to Covid, we are now bringing a horse who is winning more often than not.”

Coroebus Faces Dozen

Godolphin's Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has failed to scare away the opposition in Tuesday's G1 St James's Palace S., with the 2000 Guineas hero set to be taken on by 12 rivals but the draw has been kind in two and Charlie Appleby is bullish about his prospects in a renewal that is probably under-par. “His work's been more than pleasing of late and he'll be the horse they've all got to beat,” he said. “The Guineas is rock-solid form and he's the one everyone's excited to see. Going round the bend should suit him, as he's a strong traveller and it should allow him to come back behind the bridle a little bit and allow William to ride more of a race on him.” As will be the case all week, William Haggas will have a say with Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's May 22 G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) winner Maljoom (Ire) (Caravaggio) and Sunderland Holding's May 19 Listed Heron S. winner My Prospero (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}).

No Noble Style In The Coventry

While Coroebus is on target for Royal Ascot day one, Appleby's TDN Rising Star Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}) will be missing from the line-up in the G2 Coventry S., it was revealed on Sunday morning. Having made a striking debut over five furlongs at the track last month, the exciting juvenile had traded as ante-post favourite for much of the intervening period but was ruled out by the trainer via the Godolphin twitter feed. “Noble Style pleased in his work yesterday, but he has since had some unsatisfactory blood results back. As a result, he will not run in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot,” he explained. Aidan O'Brien will have two in the 17-strong line-up, with Frankie Dettori booked for TDN Rising Star Age of Kings (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) alongside Ryan Moore's already-accomplished mount Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never).

Siyouni’s Txope Powers To German 1000 Guineas Glory

Ecurie Griezmann's battle-hardened 3-year-old filly Txope (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}–Power of the Moon {Ire}, by Acclamation {GB}) had made seven consecutive starts in stakes company leading into Sunday's G2 Wempe 102nd German 1000 Guineas at Dusseldorf and emerged with a career high to add to a victory in last term's Listed Winterkonigin Trial at Cologne. The €310,000 Arqana September yearling went postward for this second start in Germany coming back off a fifth in Deauville's Apr. 7 G3 Prix Imprudence and a runner-up finish in ParisLongchamp's May 1 Listed Prix du Pont Neuf. Txope broke swiftly from the inside stall and was steadied to track the leaders in a close-up third going into the first turn. Cutting loose once inside the quarter-mile marker, she quickened in impressive fashion to poach a decisive advantage approaching the eighth pole and was ridden out in the closing stages to hold the late rush of Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}) by 3/4-of-a-length.

“This is a very special moment for me and also for the filly, the owner and the trainer,” winning rider Aurelien Lemaitre told GaloppOnline. “She is an iron-hard filly and has improved with every race. She has a very good action and a very good turn of foot.” Trainer Philippe Decouz, watching on from ParisLongchamp, added, “Aurelien [Lemaitre] gave her the perfect ride from behind and, when he let her loose, she was gone too far clear for Mylady's late finish to make any difference to the result. We will carefully consider our plans and she might have a break over the summer, but there's still the option to go to Deauville. She's able to handle smaller, tighter tracks, so we might try our luck in a Grade I race in the Unites States in the second half of the season.”

Txope, full-sister to a 2-year-old filly, is the third of four foals and lone stakes scorer from two winners and as many runners produced by MSP Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge and Listed Prix Ronde de Nuit runner-up Power of the Moon (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), herself a half-sister to G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte and G3 Prix Eclipse victrix Zinziberine (Zieten). Zinziberine has four stakes performers to her credit, headed by the G3 Prix de Cabourg victor Zanzibari (Smart Strike), as well as being the second dam of the stakes-winning Zylpha (Ire) (Elusive City). The April-foaled bay's second dam Amenixa (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) is a full-sister to dual G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero Amilynx (Fr) and Listed Prix Ceres winner Amie de Mix (Fr). Amenixa is also half to G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte victor Amiwain (Fr) (Unfuwain) and hails from the family of MGISW distaffer Life's Magic (Cox's Ridge).

Trueshan Gold Cup Bid Unlikely Due to Unsuitable Ground

Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}), the long-time ante-post favourite for the G1 Ascot Gold Cup, has taken a walk in the betting for the Thursday showpiece after connections said he was unlikely to run at the royal meeting due to unsuitably quick ground.

A general 5-2 favourite for the race on Sunday morning, Trueshan could be backed at odds as big as 15-2 after the 6-year-old's trainer Alan King revealed that the quick ground was likely to scupper plans of running in the Gold Cup.

The ground at Ascot was described as good to firm, good in places on Sunday and, with no sign of rain in the forecast, coupled with drying winds and soaring temperatures, King feels Trueshan will not get his desired conditions.

He explained, “I am hugely concerned about the ground and I can't see any rain coming either, looking at all the forecasts. We might hang on in there, but if the forecast is right, I can't see us running.”

Kind added, “It is frustrating, but last year the ground came right for us at Goodwood, in France and at Ascot later in the year.

“Ascot should be run on fast ground, it is high summer at the end of the day. But if I call it wrong once, I could finish him. We are going to try to get it right. We have to try to get it right. It will be a last-minute call, but I would say he is very unlikely to run.”

The field could be further reduced as connections of Scope (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who won the Listed Noel Murless S. at Ascot before taking the G1 Prix Royal-Oak at ParisLongchamp in October, have also indicated he will be held back.

With doubts around some of the leading players in the Ascot Gold Cup, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) hardened into a general 6-4 chance for the race with Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who won the race three times on the trot from 2018, available at odds of 2-1 in his bid to regain his crown.

Derby Runner-Up Hoo Ya Mal Supplemented To King Edward VII S.

Ahmad Al Shaikh's Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) has been supplemented for £15,000 to the G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot next Friday. Off the mark at second asking at York in August, he was second in Doncaster's Listed Flying Scotsman S. a month later and was shelved. He resumed from winter quarters with a third in the G3 Craven S. behind subsequent G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas runner-up Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) on Apr. 13 and was second again, this time in the Listed Newmarket S., on Apr. 29.

Also supplemented to the 12-furlong King Edward field is the stakes-placed Kevin Ryan trainee Dark Moon Rising (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), who bears the colours of Mrs. Angie Bailey. At this stage, there are four Aidan O'Brien trainees signed on, including Derby fifth Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), while William Haggas has left in the listed-placed Lysander (GB) (New Approach {Ire}).
