Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Observations features a full-sister to Headman (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

Juddmonte's March-foaled homebred PREPENSE (GB) (Kingman {GB}), scratched from a July 21 engagement at Newbury, is a full-sister to G1 Irish Champion S. fifth and dual Group 2-winning sire Headman (GB) and encounters 10 distaffers in this debut. She is accompanied by her Sir Michael Stoute-trained stablemate Lady Wilbraham (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), a Cheveley Park Stud homebred half to two black-type performers out of multiple Group 1-placed 1000 Guineas runner-up Spacious (GB) (Nayef). Opposition also features Ralph Beckett trainee Luckin Brew (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), a €190,000 Arqana August full-sister to dual Group 3-winning G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern fourth Antonia De Vega (Ire), who has skipped one diary entry since posting a half-length second over this strip in her July 9 debut; and the Sean Woods-conditioned Canadiansmokeshow (Ire) (U S Navy Flag), who is a €290,000 Goffs Orby half-sister to last term's GI Del Mar Oaks heroine Going Global (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) returning off a July 7 debut third over six furlongs at this venue.

UK And Irish Breeders’ Associations Enter Partnership In Support Of Sales Welfare Guidelines

Ahead of the yearling sales season, guidelines for the sale of Thoroughbred breeding and young stock were published through a partnership between the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) and the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ITBA). These guidelines were created following consultation with industry participants and the support of both Tattersalls and Goffs. Available online, the aim is to help new industry participants navigate the sales preparation and selling processes for optimum equine health and welfare, while also providing transparency on Thoroughbred care before, during and after sales.

Ted Voute, Chairman of the TBA Sales Consignors' Committee said, “The British and Irish Thoroughbred breeding industries remain committed to advocating and promoting the highest standards of care and well-being for our horses through guidance and training. The publication of these guidelines demonstrate how we can work together to showcase our best practices to those outside our sector and help new entrants.”

Shane O'Dwyer, ITBA Chief Executive Officer added, “We are pleased to be partnering on this initiative with the British TBA to highlight the high standards within the Thoroughbred breeding sector. Nothing can replace the practical experience or training that our industries provide but working together we can help new participants across both markets find the key information they need to navigate the sales process and deliver optimum care for their horses.”

Dubawi’s Rebel’s Romance Too Good For Glorious Rivals

Back on song in Newmarket's Listed Fred Archer S. last month, last term's G2 UAE Derby hero Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Minidress {GB}, by Street Cry {Ire}) continued his winning thread, and that of man-of-the-moment William Buick, with a game victory going two yards shy of 12 furlongs in Friday's G3 L'Ormarins Queen's Plate Glorious S. at Goodwood. The Charlie Appleby-trained 4-5 favourite was steadied to race just off the tempo in fourth initially and slipped to fifth at halfway. Nudged along to reduce arrears with a half-mile remaining, he powered to the front approaching the final furlong and was driven out to deny last year's G2 Queen's Vase-winning stablemate Kemari (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by a length. Richard Hannon trainee Fancy Man (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) spoilt the Godolphin trifecta ballot and finished 1 3/4 lengths further back in third.

“It was relatively straightforward,” said Buick, whose sixth winner of the meet extended his lead to three ahead of Ryan Moore in the jockeys' table. “He would probably be better off a slightly stronger pace, but he was racing far enough out. Once we got organised, I thought he saw the race off well. He had to stay today as Kemari is a strong stayer. That is only his second run on turf, and obviously his first run on a track like Goodwood, and he has always run on a flat track. I thought he did it very well. He is a good staying horse. As a 3-year-old, he was a hugely exciting horse and won the UAE Derby, so the engine is there. I think he is in the category where he can get 14 furlongs. I have ridden some wonderful horses this week and some really exciting ones for the future. This is what it's all about.”

Assistant trainer Alex Merriam added, “William was delighted with Rebel's Romance. He said he was a classy professional in the race and has seen it out well. The pace ideally could have been a little bit faster for him, but William said that once he got rolling, he has picked up and done it nicely. That is only his second run on turf. He won the UAE Derby and we sort of went down the dirt route this year thinking that might be his way forward. It didn't quite work out, so Charlie brought him back to the turf last time at Newmarket and it seems to have gone well. I spoke to Charlie and he said that today was the target. He has seen that out well, so there is the possibility of stepping up to a mile and six furlongs. We will let the dust settle and see how we go from there.” Reflecting on the performance of Kemari, Merriam continued, “He won a Queen's Vase last year, so he is a horse with plenty of ability. He got a nice lead in front and kept galloping away. Again, he might be one to step up in trip.”

Third-placed Fancy Man is now bound for York's valuable Ebor H., according to Richard Hannon. “This was his last run before the Ebor to see where we were and he has run a super race,” the trainer said. “He will definitely get further and could be a very good horse in Cup races next year. It wouldn't surprise me if he could be competitive in [the G1] Melbourne [Cup] one day.”

Rebel's Romance, one of his sire's 154 pattern-race winners, is the leading performer out of Listed Height Of Fashion S. runner-up Minidress (GB) (Street Cry {Ire}), whose three scorers include Listed Cairn Rouge S. placegetter Petticoat (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Minidress is a full-sister to G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy victor Volcanic Sky (GB), with both being produced by G3 Musidora S.-winning G1 Yorkshire Oaks second Short Skirt (GB) (Diktat {GB}), who also ran third in Epsom's G1 Oaks. Rebel Romance's third dam is the excellent producer Much Too Risky (GB) (Bustino {GB}), who has four stakes winners to her credit headed by G2 Prix de Pomone winner Whitewater Affair (GB) (Machiavellian), herself the dam of the multiple Group 1-winning Dubai World Cup hero Victoire Pisa (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) and G1 Yasuda Kinen winner Asakusa De'nen (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). Short Skirt's three-parts brother Little Rock (GB) (Warning {GB}) annexed the G2 Princess of Wales's S. while Much Too Risky is kin to G1 Irish St Leger hero Arctic Owl (GB) (Most Welcome {GB}) and G1 Sydney Cup winner Marooned (GB) (Mill Reef). Minidress has the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Measured Time (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and a yearling filly by Golden Horn (GB) to come.

Dark Angel’s Khaadem Powers To King George Glory

Charles Hills dominated Goodwood's G2 King George Qatar S. with the now-retired Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) from 2017 through 2020 and has found another son of Dark Angel to claim glory in the five-furlong charge after G3 Palace House S. victor Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–White Daffodil {Ire}, by Footstepsinthesand {GB}) blew his rivals away and provided the trainer with a record-breaking fifth renewal on Friday. Fitri Hay's 6-year-old gelding had already tasted glory at this meeting, having annexed 2019's Stewards' Cup H. as a 3-year-old, and burst clear in the closing stages here for a career high. Racing under a firm grip in mid division through furious early fractions, the 8-1 chance made eyecatching headway into contention from halfway and went beyond recall once quickening for control entering the final furlong to hold the fast-closing G3 Coral Charge victor Raasel (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) by a neck. Clive Cox trainee Caturra (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) was best of the remainder and finished 3/4-of-a-length adrift in third.

“It has always been the plan to come here, the track suits and he has won here before in the Stewards' Cup,” explained Hills. “He is getting faster with age and today he was so relaxed, which is not like him. I said to Ryan [Moore] that he was held up when he won the Stewards' Cup, so ride him how you want. He has won a couple of times making all, but he does not have to be ridden that way and Ryan gave him a peach [of a ride]. The way the race unfolded, they all came down the one side, and that opened everything up. He likes a bit of space in his races. He is a good horse, a very good horse with a lot of speed. Ryan was very positive after and we will look now for a Group 1, the Nunthorpe or wherever. He is growing up and sprinters can take their time. As a 3-year-old he had a fantastic season, but it then did not quite work for him as a 4-year-old. When Baattash won this day, Khaadem won the Stewards' Cup the next day and someone told me that he clocked a quicker sectional. We went then to a [G1] Haydock Sprint Cup and have always thought he could get to the top table. Maybe it's age, maturity or being cut. He wears a red hood, but he is not tricky, just a bit quirky.”

Moore added, “Khaadem has shown already this year how good he is in the Palace House. It is the first time I've sat on him and the plan was not to be dropping him in. They went very hard and the pace was either side of me. Because he usually leads, I ended up taking it up too soon and he was waiting in front. He won the Stewards' Cup over six furlongs and has won this over five. He can win dropped in or from the front. He is a very good horse.”

Jim Hay, husband of winning owner Fitri, continued, “We have always thought that Khaadem was a class horse. We were hopeful that he would deliver on our expectations and he did. That was perfect, and a great training performance from Charlie. I could not split Khaadem and our other runner [eighth-placed] Equilateral, as they are neck and neck on the gallops. Equilateral did everything we wanted from him. He ran a great race and will win a big one at some point. Goodwood is a fantastic track, a lucky place for us, and we've had a great week.”

Raasel's trainer Mick Appleby was upbeat despite his star attraction's reversal. “Raasel has run a blinder,” the trainer said. “James [Doyle] just said at halfway he hit a false bit of ground and that is when he had just come off the bridle. The ground may be overwatered for him and he likes a quicker surface. He has run a blinder and the winner Khaadem is a very good horse, so we're not disappointed at all. Raasel is definitely a Group 2 horse and I would imagine it will be the [G1] Nunthorpe and the [G1] Flying Five now.”

Reflecting on the performance of third-placed Caturra, trainer Clive Cox said, “It was a very pleasing run. He probably got a little bit outpaced for the first furlong down the hill, but really hit the line well. I am delighted and that was a very good performance. He is a horse that really came into himself for the second part of last year, so I'm quite excited. He isn't that ground dependent, so we can look at all the nice five-furlong races from here on.”

Khaadem, one of his sire's 49 pattern-race winners, is one of two stakes scorers for White Daffodil (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and thus a full-brother to Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy victor and multiple Group-placed G2 Norfolk S. and G2 Mill Reef S. runner-up Log Out Island (Ire) (Dark Angel (Ire). White Daffodil is a winning sibling of three stakes performers headed by Listed Carnarvon S. and Listed Prix Saraca winner Lady Links (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}), herself the dam of Listed Oh So Sharp S. victrix Selinka (GB) (Selkirk). Selinka, in turn, is the dam of G3 Curragh S. and G3 Mercury S. winner Hit The Bid (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and the stakes-winning distaffer Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}).
