Jacques Le Marois Glory For Frankel’s Inspiral

Putting her first career defeat in the G1 Falmouth S. firmly behind her on Sunday, Cheveley Park Stud's Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) took another step forward to defeat the colts and older horses in Deauville's illustrious G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois, a 'Win And You're In' for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland in November. Always travelling with abundant intent under Frankie Dettori as she craved action restrained a few lengths off the fierce pace duel up ahead, the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Fillies' Mile heroine worked her way to the fore with 300 metres remaining and had to give extra as the G1 Prix Jean Prat runner-up Light Infantry (Fr) (Fast Company {Ire}) emerged in the closing stages. Always a touch too strong for that rival, the 9-5 second favourite held a neck advantage at the line as the leading French hope Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) joined in to be the same margin away in third. The 8-5 market-leader Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) made a dramatic wide move from further back, which fizzled out as he came home fifth.

“We were scratching our heads after Newmarket after an amazing performance in the Coronation, but today she was taking on Guineas winners and older horses and showed she's a true champion,” Dettori said. “We went extremely fast throughout and I hit the front plenty early, but John thinks she can get a little bit further in time so I wasn't afraid about getting to the line. She travelled great and was on it today but she's a filly that you need to know–when she wants to go, she's the kind of filly you don't want to disappoint.”

Inspiral, who had proven when ultra-impressive in the Coronation that she is the leading 3-year-old filly in Europe, was up against a notable front-runner's bias in the Falmouth where Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) stole a march on her. That July 8 feature has seen many upsets down the years and the quick surface prevalent at Newmarket's July Festival meant that the Gosdens' luminary was in much deeper than her odds of 1-6 suggested. This was a return to her comfort zone, with the pace so strong up front that Prosperous Voyage was behind the aggressively-ridden trio of State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Bathrat Leon (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}). Finishing off at 1:34.07, she is behind only the Freddy Head starlets Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) and Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in terms of winning time in the recent decades, with that duo out on their own in dipping under 1:34.

John Gosden, who was annexing a third straight win in a race he has won four times overall, was keen to revisit Inspiral's sole reversal at Newmarket. “It wasn't really that she was out of form last time–she'd had three weeks since Ascot and was in top form, but it was a small field and she didn't get any cover. She over-raced, did too much and didn't have much left at the end, which is her nature,” he explained. “There was a strong pace today and they went hard up front, so she switched off and relaxed. She probably hit the front a bit soon, to say the least, but the key with her is to get her relaxed early. She's very generous and wants to give and sometimes with that they're a little over-enthusiastic. You could go to a Matron or a Sun Chariot, but I would be inclined to freshen up for the QEII which is her main aim. I prefer to go to the Breeders' Cup with older horses, so not this year.”

David Simcock said of Light Infantry, “I'm very proud of the horse and very pleased. He had a gallop to run at today, which was good, and he's run his heart out and run a personal best. The likelihood is that he'll go straight to the Golden Eagle in Sydney now in October. That will be his last run of the year and then he'll come back.”

Not surprisingly, Coroebus ran the fastest individual furlong of the field in the second half of the race with his sectional of 10.95 coming between the three and the two-furlong pole but he had a lot of ground to make up and paid for that sharp effort late. Along with the progressive runner-up, The Aga Khan's previously unbeaten TDN Rising Star Erevann was also excelling with the promise of better to come having entered this as the least-hardened runner coming off a narrow G3 Prix Paul de Moussac win. Christophe Soumillon said of the son of Ervedya (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), whose 10.99 split to two out was followed by the fastest final furlong, “My horse ran a blinder. He lacked some experience, but made a move like he would win it. Had it been slightly softer, it might have been a better result but I am proud of his performance.”

Inspiral, who was racking up group 1 win number 42 for her sire here, is out of the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk) whose previous best was the Listed Cocked Hat S.-placed Celestran (GB) (Dansili {GB}). The second dam Moon Goddess (GB) (Rainbow Quest), who produced the Listed Rosemary S. winner Solar Magic (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), is a daughter of the Listed Sweet Solera S. winner Mystic Goddess (Storm Bird) who was responsible for the G1 Eclipse S. and G1 Juddmonte International-winning sire Medicean (GB). Also connected to the G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. winner Mondreise (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) and the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero and leading sire Caro (Ire), Starscope's yearling colt is by Erevann's sire Siyouni.

Dark Angel’s Mysterious Night To The Fore At Deauville

Third in last month's G2 July S. at Newmarket and G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood, Godolphin's homebred 2-year-old Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Mistrusting {Ire}, by Shamardal) bounced back in style to claim an ultimately comfortable victory in Sunday's G3 Circus Maximus Prix Francois Boutin at Deauville. Steadied behind all four rivals through halfway, the 2-5 favourite made eyecatching headway once angle to the outer for a clear passage approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on well under mild urging once gaining an edge passing the furlong pole to register a career high by a half length from Bolshkinov (Fr) (Camacho {GB}).

“He's a horse we've always liked and we decided to wait with him here rather than going forward like he did at Goodwood last time,” explained trainer Charlie Appleby. “We had it in mind to take him to Canada next, but William said it is not certain that he'd stretch out to a mile just yet, so we will look at various options here in Europe. The [G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere in October is a possibility.”

Mysterious Night becomes the 51st pattern-race winner for his sire and second for Listed Boadicea Fillies' S. victrix Mistrusting (Ire) (Shamardal), who also produced his GI Just A Game S. and GI Diana S.-winning full-sister Althiqa (GB). Mistrusting is the leading performer out of G2 Cherry Hinton S. victrix Misheer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a granddaughter of Lighthouse (GB) (Warning {GB}) who is a half-sister to G1 Middle Park S.-winning sire First Trump (GB) (Primo Dominie {GB}) from the family of G1 Prix de l'Abbaye hero Mr Brooks (GB) (Blazing Saddles {Aus}). Mistrusting has a yearling filly by Kodiac (GB) and a weanling colt by Dubawi (Ire) to come.

Coroebus Faces Jacques Le Marois Test

While Saratoga continues to thrill across the Atlantic, the long hot summer of 2022 rolls on with Deauville staging its own prolonged festival to draw the elite to Normandy's cradle of racing. The G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois is arguably the jewel of the whole month and has attracted some notable actors on Sunday including Godolphin's exciting Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). At this mile trip, Charlie Appleby has the material this season with the English, French and Irish 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace S. already in safe keeping. Only Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) could deny Moulton Paddocks a clean sweep in the G1 Sussex S., but even then the stable had a solid second with Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) acting as a deputy for the missing 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace hero. Appleby is surprisingly bullish ahead of the homebred's hardest task to date. “All of his runs before Royal Ascot were over the straight mile at Newmarket and I think he is more comfortable racing over a straight course, which we get here. We are very confident that he can keep his unbeaten record for the year intact.”

What Next From Inspiral?

After Royal Ascot, most would have pointed to Cheveley Park Stud's G1 Coronation S. heroine Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) as the one to side with in a match with Coroebus who looked fortunate to have come away with the Tuesday feature. While the subsequent shock defeat of the John and Thady Gosden-trained homebred at the hands of Marc Chan and Andrew Rosen's Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket July 8 has raised a question mark, the July Course is renowned for favouring front-runners when the ground is riding as fast as it was then and connections are convinced they have her in the right place for her own moment of truth. “I know she had little bit of a blip at Newmarket last time, but you have to excuse her after the long lay-off and sometimes horses can throw a bad one in,” Frankie Dettori said. “When I say bad, she was second, but she didn't run to her full potential.”

No Time To Rest

Honours are even between the Classic generation and the older horses in the last 10 runnings, but few in the latter category could boast the type of record that State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) brings to the table. His quartet of top-level wins have all come over further, but the pace that he showed from the front when denying Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) in the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot June 15 will take him a long way reverting to a mile. His toughness is also an essential  quality and will be a prerequisite as the 3-year-olds come at him late on here. Joseph O'Brien has been intent on trying him at a mile for some time and feels this is the ideal spot. “He's a horse that's always shown plenty of speed and it will be interesting to see how he can perform at a shorter distance,” he said. “Every day he goes to the track, he turns up and he has no problem leading, like he did last time. I think it's fairly obvious he'll be ridden in an uncomplicated way, whether he's getting a lead or not. It comes either way to him.”

A Nation's Pride With Erevann

With the first two Group 1 contests of the famed August meeting going the way of the British, the odds are cramped that this prestige event will also traverse La Manche as the home nation struggles to gain any respite from the onslaught. Last Tuesday's G1 Prix Rothschild saw Goldistyle (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) grab third, but Sunday's G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest was a stark reminder of where the balance of power rests in Europe with the eighth-placed Accakaba (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) faring best of the domestic runners. It is incredible to think that the whole of France's training ranks can muster just two representatives in one of their feature events on Sunday, with both hailing from the Jean-Claude Rouget stable. Nevertheless, one is The Aga Khan's unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Erevann (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}), a son of Ervedya (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) who stated his case when taking Chantilly's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac June 19. He has to find improvement from that effort, but with his pedigree it is entirely possible.

A Continuing Romance?

Charlie Appleby will be hoping that he can pull off a notable double on Sunday, with Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) taking on the German runners in Hoppegarten's G1 Westminster 132nd Grosser Preis von Berlin. A typical Godolphin raider in this country, the June 25 Listed Fred Archer S. and July 29 G3 Glorious S. winner is unbeaten on turf and all-weather and his trainer said, “We felt this was a nice opportunity to test the waters at this level and we are confident that he won't disgrace himself.” Stall Nizza's May 29 G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft winner Alter Adler (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) may offer the sternest threat among the older horses, while the pick of the 3-year-olds look to be Darius Racing's May 22 G2 Derby Italiano hero Ardakan (GB) (Reliable Man {GB}) and Anna Schleusner-Fruhriep's Nastaria (GB) (Outstrip {GB}), who is out just a week after her impressive success in Dresden's Listed Sommerpreis over 9 1/2 furlongs.

Night Of Thunder’s Mauiewowie Edges Curragh Thriller

Eleanora Kennedy's 2-year-old filly Mauiewowie (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}–La Chapelle {Ire}, by Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) made it two wins from three starts, and a career high, when annexing Saturday's Listed Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club Curragh S. over five furlongs. In a strong renewal, the 7-4 favourite prevailed by a short head from familiar rival Treasure Trove (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), with Listed Prix La Fleche runner-up Funny Money Honey (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) a further 2 1/2 lengths adrift in third.

Saturday, Curragh, Ireland

3rd Dam: Caumshinaun (Ire), by Indian Ridge (Ire)
1ST BLACK-TYPE WIN. (52,000gns Wlg '20 TATFOA; 155,000gns Ylg '21 TATOCT). O-Eleanora Kennedy; B-Trebles Holford Farm Thoroughbreds (GB); T-Ger Lyons; J-Colin Keane. €22,500. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, $42,254.

3–Funny Money Honey (Ire), 126, f, 2, Bungle Inthejungle (GB)–Jackie Sparrow (Ire), by Dandy Man (Ire). (€11,500 Ylg '21 GOAUTY). O-Mrs Theresa Marnane; B-Mark Burns (IRE); T-Jessica Harrington. €3,750.
Margins: SHD, 2HF, 2 1/4. Odds: 1.75, 4.50, 6.00.
Also Ran: Wave Machine (Fr), Harry Time (Ire), Badb (Ire), Kodi Red (Ire).

Mauiewowie, successful going five furlongs at Naas in her July 2 unveiling, ran second back over the same trip in that track's July 20 Listed Marwell S. last time and made the leap forward with a career high in this straight dash. Positioned behind the pace in a handy third after an alert getaway, she loomed large on the bridle when joining the front rank with a quarter mile remaining and was driven out inside the final furlong to outbob Marwell third Treasure Trove on the line in a thrilling conclusion.

“She's a lovely filly and a filly we always liked,” said trainer Ger Lyons. “We have a load of backward 2-year-olds at home and she's the one that has always been precocious. She's by Night Of Thunder, one of my favourites if not my favourite sire, and Kris Weld just told me that she's a granddaughter of Nightime, so she has the pedigree. I was very worried about today's ground, but they've done a marvellous job. We'll see how she comes out of it, we won't rush her and we'll let her come along. She'll come into her own over six furlongs with a little bit of juice [in the ground]. We have loads of options now, including the [Listed] Blenheim over six furlongs [at Fairyhouse], but I'll let her grow up because she's a work-in-progress. She'll be a lovely horse for next year. [Owner] Eleanora [Kennedy] is the lucky charm, she's a very lucky owner and I think that's her 10th or 11th winner since she joined me. That just doesn't happen.”

Mauiewowie, who becomes the 32nd stakes winner for her sire (by Dubawi {Ire}), is the seventh of eight foals and one of four scorers out of a half-sister to multiple elite-level winner Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and GI Man O' War S. heroine Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The March-foaled chestnut's dam La Chapelle (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), herself a daughter of G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Nightime (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), has also thrown the dual stakes-placed Something Enticing (Ire) (Fascinating Rock {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Expert Eye (GB). Nightime is the leading performer for Listed Platinum S. victrix Caumshinaun (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), with the latter being the second dam of GII American Jockey Club Cup and G2 Meguro Kinen victor King Of Koji (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) and G3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Harajuku (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
