Ballydoyle Debutantes Intrigue On Ascot Card

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Observations features a Ballydoyle debutante.

PADDINGTON (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) is a rare British debut runner for Ballydoyle on a day when there are no pattern races, with the stable opting to bring two members of its powerful juvenile squad to the Berkshire venue. The joint-second highest-priced lot at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale, the April-foaled bay who holds a G1 Dewhurst S. entry is out of the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit winner Modern Eagle (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire}) from the family of their 2009 Dewhurst runner-up Fencing Master (GB) (Oratorio {Ire}). He meets Godolphin's Charlie Appleby-trained City Of Kings (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a 350,000gns Book 1 graduate whose dam is the G2 Lancashire Oaks winner Horseplay (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and who caught the eye when fifth at Sandown last month after blowing the start; and James Wigan's newcomer Burnish (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a William Haggas-trained half-brother to the talented Karar (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Lights On (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}).

RED RIDING HOOD (IRE) (Justify) is the other representative from Rosegreen on the card and a significant one as the third foal out of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine and 1000 Guineas runner-up Ballydoyle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). A half-sister to the Listed Ingabelle S. scorer Monday (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), the March-foaled chestnut is also connected to the multiple Group 1 winner Misty For Me (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and her top-level scorers U S Navy Flag and Roly Poly.

Haydock’s Sprint Cup Attracts 17

There is no concern with small field sizes in an ultra-competitive edition of Haydock's G1 Betfair Sprint Cup on Saturday, with a maximum line-up of 17 sprinters heading to post after the draw was made on Thursday. In the past 10 runnings, only Dream Of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) and G Force (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) were drawn in double figures, so connections of the leading fancies Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) would have been buoyed by seeing their runners handed low numbers for the six-furlong straight clash.

 

Legend Heads Strong Palmer Challenge

Sunday's G3 Goldene Peitsche winner Dubawi Legend (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has been given the go-ahead to back up for the race and will be one of the pace angles breaking from stall four along with the forward-going Art Power and Naval Crown. Dr. Ali Ridha's 'TDN Rising Star' is one of a trio from Hugo Palmer's Manor House Stables alongside Chasemore Farm's G2 Greenlands S. winner Brad The Brief (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) and the G1 Commonwealth Cup runner-up Flaming Rib (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}). “It will be very special when we get a first Group 1 from Manor House, after a Group 2 winner and a Group 1 second, and I'm really looking forward to running all three of them,” the trainer told QIPCO British Champions Series. “If it rains I suspect that Brad The Brief has the best chance, but the other two are entries in a stallion-making race, so any one of the three would be wonderful.”

Explaining the absence of Brad The Brief since his career-best in the Greenlands and the Curragh May 21, Palmer added, “It was very quick ground when we were considering the Maurice De Gheest and then he was a non-runner after being declared for the City Of York. He doesn't need it soft–there was no real cut in it at The Curragh–but he doesn't want fast ground, and having waited so long I wouldn't want to go and jar him up out of frustration. Dubai Legend is amazing. He was very happy and fresh when we gave him a quiet canter on Wednesday morning and although it's a big leap from a German Group 3 we are keen to give it a go.”

 

Ryan Team Wait On The Weather

Last year's Sprint Cup winner Emaraaty Ana (GB) (Shamardal) is in stall 13, but has the front-running G2 King George S. scorer Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) alongside in 12 in what should prove a fascinating encounter. Of more concern than the draw is the effect of the forecast rain, with jockey Andrea Atzeni hoping that it avoids Haydock so as not to diminish the prospect of the first dual winner since 1967. “He likes a strong pace to run at, which he should get once again, but the major key to him is the ground,” he told QIPCO British Champions Series. “We got lucky last year as it was very fast, which is just how he likes it, so ideally we don't want too much rain. I did say to Kevin earlier this year that I thought he might come good in the autumn again, and he's going to Haydock with a very similar profile to last year.”

 

Tasso Set For Clash

The final field for Sunday's G1 152nd Wettstar Grosser Preis von Baden was also established on Thursday, with Gestut Auenquelle's Arc hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in line for his title defence as he limbers up for his return to ParisLongchamp in four weeks' time. Gestut Park Wiedingen's G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis winner Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) receives seven pounds weight-for-age from the Frankie Dettori-ridden 5-year-old, with Rene Piechulek forced to miss out to honour his retainer on last year's G1 Grosser Preis Von Bayern runner-up Mendocino (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) as five head to post. In a twist, Piechulek had also partnered Sammarco to success in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis with Bauyrzhan Murzabayev out of action, but that rider is back on board the 3-year-old this time.

Wootton Bassett Colt A New Rising Star At ParisLongchamp

Jean-Claude Rouget unveiled another TDN Rising Star at ParisLongchamp on Thursday as Nurlan Bizakov's Padishakh (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Penny Lane {Ger}, by Lord Of England {Ger}) scored with abundant promise in the Prix de Fontenoy over a mile for colts and gelding beginners. Anchored in fifth early by Cristian Demuro, the 100-30 second favourite tended to over-race but when asked to stretch two out found a 10.94 penultimate split to reach the Wertheimers' Speechman (Kingman {GB}) on the front end. Stretching away from the furlong pole, the bay hit the line strong with 2 1/2 lengths to spare over the eye-catching Juddmonte homebred Halfway Line (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}), with Speechman a further 1 1/4 lengths behind in third.

The winner, who cost €130,000 at the Arqana Deauville August Sale, is the third TDN Rising Star for his sire and hails from a strong German family. He is the second and currently last known foal out of Penny Lane, who was successful in the Listed Prix des Sablonnets and finished third in the G3 Prix Cleopatre. Her first foal, the 3-year-old filly Snap Ambush (Fr) by Wootton Bassett's son Almanzor (Fr) who was a €250,000 Arqana Deauville Select Sale graduate tragically broke down when looking in control of a Chelmsford handicap last month and had to be euthanised.

The listed-placed second dam Peace Time (Ger) (Surumu {Ger}) proved prolific at producing black-type performers, with five to boast of including Penny Lane. They are Lord Of England's G1 Preis der Diana heroine Palmas (Ger), the dual group 3 winner Peace Royale (Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}), the G3 Fahrhofer Stutenpreis scorer Peaceful Love (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}) and the G2 Park Hill S. runner-up Phiz (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}). Peace Royale went on to produce the black-type winners Peace In Motion (Hat Trick {Jpn}) and Peace Society (Iffraaj {GB}), while Peaceful Love threw the G3 Prix la Force scorer Pao Alto (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) and Phiz the G2 Dubai Gold Cup-placed Al Madhar (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Another of her daughters Peace of Glory (Ger) also by Sholokhov was responsible for Peaches (Ger), a further Lord Of England who captured the Listed Winterkonigin Trial, and the G3 Zukunftsrennen third Peace Of Paris (Ger) (Helmet {Aus}).

Bated Breath’s Juliet Sierra To The Fore At Salisbury

Juddmonte's 2-year-old filly Juliet Sierra (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}–Kilo Alpha {GB}, by King's Best) bettered a July 22 debut second going six furlongs at Newmarket with a breakthrough score over much the same trip at Nottingham last month and continued her rapid rise with a career high on stakes bow in Thursday's G3 Ire-Incentive It Pays To Buy Irish Dick Poole Fillies' S. at Salisbury. Finding a smooth rhythm behind the leaders in fifth after an alert getaway, the 9-2 favourite tanked forward to launch her challenge passing the quarter-mile marker and was ridden out in the closing stages to assert superiority by a neck from All The Time (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).

“She's a beautiful filly by our own stallion Bated Breath and it was a lovely performance,” said Juddmonte's racing manager Barry Mahon. “She's always been well regarded by Ralph [Beckett] and Rob [Hornby] and she delivered today. Ralph and myself were confident she'd get seven [furlongs] after the last day and Ralph said let's keep her over six for now, but I thought today it looked like she'd sharpened up a bit. She's in the [seven-furlong G2] Rockfel and the [six-furlong G1] Cheveley Park. They are three weeks away and I suppose it's a big jump from a Group 3 to a Group 1, but we are getting into that time of year where options are getting tight. Ralph is in Baden-Baden at the sales so we haven't had the discussion yet, but they are good discussions to have. She's a beautiful filly, she looks good and when they win a Group 3 they are heading in the right direction.”

Juliet Sierra is the eighth of 10 foals and one of six scorers out of Listed Prix de Bagatelle victrix Kilo Alpha (GB) (King's Best), herself a full-sister to multiple stakes-winning G1 Prix d'Ispahan third Runaway (GB). The February-foaled homebred bay is a half-sister to GI Jenny Wiley S. heroine Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}), G3 Prix Thomas Bryon runner-up Alpha Bravo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), the dual stakes-placed Bravo Sierra (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a weanling colt by Expert Eye (GB).
