147 Horses Nominated To The Dubai World Cup Carnival

A total of 147 horses from 16 countries have been entered in the upcoming Dubai World Cup Carnival that begins at Meydan Racecourse on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023. The nine-week Carnival is a preview for the Dubai World Cup night festivities on Mar. 25 next year.

Among the horses that have accepted their Carnival engagements are an 11-strong team from American-based trainer Doug O'Neill, who saddled four winners from just 19 runners in 2022. Grade II scorer Slow Down Andy (Nyquist), third in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, is set for the desert, as is Oud Metha S. winner Get Back Goldie (Goldencents) and GI Pennsylvania Derby sixth B Dawk (Gormley).

Fellow American Dallas Stewart sends Long Range Toddy (Take Charge Indy), hero of the GII Rebel S. Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), from the Charlie Hills barn, is back for a third time and he is joined by stablemate Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Richard Hannon will send group winners Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), the latter second in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night in 2022.

South American is also well represented by Group 1 winners La Validada (Arg) (Valid Stripes {Arg}), Nino Guapo (Arg) (Catcher In The Rye {Ire}) and El Musical (Arg) (Il Campione {Chi), all three from the yard of Juan Saldivia. Uruguayan Group 1 winner Loreley (Brz) (Kentuckian) is also set to participate for trainer Ricardo Colombo.

Stephanie Cooley, International Liaison for Dubai Racing Club, said, “We are delighted with the strength of nominations which we have received from across the world for the Carnival.

“To have nations such as South Korea, who have suffered from Covid restrictions in recent years, returning is gratifying, and it's also superb to welcome back many returning equine stars as well as some new faces from the UK, Ireland and the USA.”

Godolphin's homebred debutante STAR GUEST (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is a daughter of MGSW G1 Prix d'Ispahan third Usherette (Ire) (Shamardal) and the mount of William Buick here. The March-foaled bay is accompanied by Charlie Appleby-trained stablemate Glory Lily (GB) (Shamardal), who is a half-sister to MGSW G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud and Sunday's G1 Hong Kong Vase runner-up Botanik (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}), in this 12-runner affair.

Fitri Hay's hitherto unraced CLAN CHIEFTAIN (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) is a Ralph Beckett-trained son of G3 Give Thanks S. victrix Pink Symphony (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) and thus a full-brother to this year's GI Man O' War S. hero Highland Chief (Ire). The April-foaled homebred bay encounter's a baker's dozen on debut.

Group 1 Winner Salios Retired To Shadai

Group 1 winner Salios (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}–Salomina {Ger}, by Lomitas {GB}) has been retired from racing and will stand at Shadai Stallion Station beginning in 2023, www.winkeiba.jp reported on Tuesday. The Northern Racing-bred chestnut had been due to contest the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin on Sunday but was withdrawn after he was found to be lame in his left foreleg. A fee will be announced later for the Silk Racing Company colourbearer.

Undefeated as a juvenile with his three-race campaign culminating in the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S., Salios would go on to run second in both the 2020 G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas and G1 Japanese Derby. The dual G2 Mainichi Okan hero (2020/22) was third in the Hong Kong Mile during the 2021 edition of the Longines Hong Kong International Races, and he added a third in the G1 Yasuda Kinen this June. His record stands at 15-5-2-2, with $4,350,207 in earnings.

Salios, out of the G1 German Oaks heroine Salomina, is a half-brother to Japanese Group 2 victress Salacia (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who also reported home second in the G1 Arima Kinen and G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. His extended family is one of the best in Germany, as his second dam, the Tiger Hill (Ire) Group 3 winner and multiple Group 1-placed Saldentigerin (Ger), is out of listed winner Salde (Ger) (Alkalde {Ger}). Saldentigerin is a half-sister to three stakes winners and an additional two black-type horses led by dual Group 3 winner Saldenschwinge (Ger) (N The Wings {GB}). Another half-sister, the stakes-placed Saldenehre (Ger) (Highest Honor {Fr}), produced G1 German Oaks heroine Serienholde (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), herself the dam of G1 NHK Mile Cup victor Schnell Meister (Ger) (Kingman {GB}).

Gustav Klimt On The Move To Haras d’Annebault In 2023

Gustav Klimt (Ire), who has sired 10 winners in his first crop, will move to Haras d'Annebault in France next year, the stud announced on Twitter. The G2 Superlative S. scorer will stand for €3,500. Also placed in a quartet of Group 1s including the Irish 2000 Guineas, the 7-year-old is a son of Galileo (Ire) and the Danehill mare Massarra (GB), who won at listed level and was second in a pair of group races. His second dam is the blue hen producer and G1 French Oaks heroine Rafha (GB) (Kris {GB}), who is the dam of influential sires Invincible Spirit (Ire) and Kodiac (GB), by Green Desert and Danehill, respectively. Gustav Klimt's best runner is Italian listed second Sopran Blakey (Ire).
