Dubawi Legend “An Exciting Addition” To The Compas Stallion Roster

Micheál Orlandi has spoken of his excitement at being able to offer an accessible son of Dubawi (Ire) to breeders after announcing Dubawi Legend (Ire) will join the roster at Compas Stallions' Starfield Stud for the upcoming breeding season.

A classy sprinter for Hugo Palmer, Dubawi Legend chased home Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket before signing off on his juvenile campaign with a rating of 115.

He achieved Group 3 success as a 3-year-old and put in another notable performance to finish third to subsequent Group 1-winning sprinter Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) in the G3 Hackwood S. that same season.

Dubawi Legend's fee has been set at €6,500 for his debut season at the County Westmeath stud where he will stand alongside fellow newbie King Of Change (GB), Far Above (Ire), Kuroshio (Aus) and Smooth Daddy.

Orlandi said, “At a fee of €6,500, we are delighted to offer breeders the opportunity to use a precocious son of the champion sire Dubawi. Not only is Dubawi the champion sire but he is also a renowned sire of sires, and can call upon Night of Thunder (Ire), New Bay (GB)  and Zarak (Fr) to name a few.”

He added, “We haven't yet reached the crest of Dubawi's wave as a sire of sires so to stand his Group 1-performing son is very exciting. Dubawi Legend is the second-highest rated 2-year-old to retire to stud in 2023.

“A top class sprinter, he is an exciting addition to the Compas Stallions roster. Limited breeding rights are available.”

Dubawi Legend finished up in 2021 as the joint second-highest rated 2-year-old in Europe, with that 115 rating higher than what Night Of Thunder, New Bay and Zarak achieved at two. Dubawi's dominance as a sire of sires is illustrated by the fact that five of his sons have sired Group 1 winners in their own right in Europe.

Director of Racing at Rabbah, Bruce Raymond revealed how he holds Dubawi Legend in the highest of regard, and commented, “A speedy, well-bred son of Dubawi. He was an impressive debut winner and Group 1-placed at two and was even quicker at three when easily winning a Group 3 over six furlongs. We saw him as a Group 1-level sprinter.”

Out of a Raven's Pass mare, the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas winner Lovely Pass (Ire), Dubawi Legend is bred on the same successful cross as Mishriff (Ire) and Saffron Beach (Ire).

‘He’s The First Stallion Prospect I’ve Sold At Auction’ – Bolger Offers Mac Swiney At Goffs

Jim Bolger says that his Classic-winning stallion prospect Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}–Halla Na Saoire {Ire}, by Teofilo {Ire}) will appeal to just about any stud in the world when he is offered for sale online by Goffs on Friday, Jan. 20 but expressed a wish for the 2021 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner to stay in Ireland.

The reason being, according to Bolger, is that he'd like to support Mac Swiney with a dozen mares in his debut season at stud.

Bolger also revealed that, despite the fact the horse who led home stablemate Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in that memorable Curragh Classic had been subject to a number of “nibbles,” the legendary trainer and breeder was keen to offer the horse at public auction with Goffs.

He said, “It's interesting, isn't it? Mac Swiney would have appeal everywhere in the world but obviously I would prefer if he stayed in Ireland where I could use him.

“I've a dozen mares that I would like to send him and the only reason why I am selling him is because I wouldn't do him justice in promoting him.”

Bolger added, “Due to the unique nature of my business, I have to keep moving them on.  We had several nibbles over the past six months or so for Mac Swiney but we decided to sell him at public auction. He's the first stallion prospect I have sold at public auction.”

Mac Swiney's sale will take place just a few months after Bolger's Gan Teorainn (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), owned by Ennistown Stud, was sold for 1 million gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

On that, he commented, “It was a good achievement. She can only improve because she was quite backward as a 2-year-old.”

Mac Swiney won four times all told. Three of those wins were recorded as a 2-year-old, including in the G1 Vertem Futurity S. at Doncaster back in 2020.

Reflecting on Mac Swiney's career highlight at the Curragh, Bolger added, “It was a special day. It was very comfortable on the day because we knew a furlong out that the race was ours. He has top-class form. He's an Irish 2000 Guineas winner and he showed precocity at two as well.”

Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby described it as “a rare opportunity” to be afforded the opportunity to sell the Classic winner on behalf of Bolger.

He said, “Goffs is delighted to be entrusted with the sale of Classic winner Mac Swiney on behalf of Mr. Bolger. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a multiple Group 1-winning stallion prospect and we anticipate plenty of international interest through the excellent Goffs Online platform that makes such sales so easily accessible for bidders regardless of location.”

Shamardal’s Algiers Impressive In Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1

Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal) stormed to an impressive 6 1/2-length victory in the $250,000 G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 Presented by Zabeel Feed on Friday to add an exclamation point to the opening card of the Dubai World Cup Carnival.

Already a group winner after taking the G3 Jebel Ali Mile last term, the 6-year-old entire punched the breeze out wide as Golden Goal (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) battled Capezzano (Bernardini) for the backstretch run. In a good rhythm, although at least six deep on the bend, Algiers edged up to make it a line of four 600 metres out, and slingshotted past foes with abandon to seize the advantage just before the quarter-pole. From there it was only a matter of how far, with Discovery Island (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) making up ground to take second, with Everfast (Take Charge Indy) another 2 1/2 lengths behind.

“All credit to Algiers, he was really tough out there,” said co-winning trainer Simon Crisford. “We wondered beforehand if he'd had enough match practice on this surface against these horses, but he's handled it really well.”

“He's won over 10 1/2f (2100metres) at York and in France so he should get it,” he added of the Dubai World Cup distance. “He will be in the World Cup, he's also in the big race in Saudi [at the end of February], and we'll look at the next leg of the Maktoum Challenge too.”

Said Doyle, who was riding his 99th UAE winner, “The draw (11) was always a worry and I had to go four or five wide around the turn, giving away ground, but he's shown again he's a good horse.”

Successful in a Saint-Cloud listed affair back in September of 2020 and at the same tier at Compiegne in June of 2021, he placed in a pair of French Group 3s later that season. Sent to Dubai, he landed his first group race in his second start in the desert, by 1 1/2 lengths in the G3 Jebel Ali Mile in February. Unplaced in the G2 Godolphin Mile on Dubai World Cup night, Algiers made a winning return in a 1 mile 1 1/2f handicap at York, but he tired to sixth in the Listed James Seymour S. at Newmarket after being carried left on Oct. 29. However, he warmed up for this tour-de-force with a very narrow second to  Missed The Cut (Quality Road) in Lingfield's Listed Churchill S. on Nov. 12.

Pedigree Notes

The late Darley stallion Shamardal has 164 stakes winners to his name, with Algiers part of an 83-strong battalion of group winners. Based on Friday's performance, it is not outside the realm of possibility that he could become Group 1 scorer number 28 later in the year.

A half-brother to the dam of the multiple stakes placed Anthorus (Fr) (Territories {Ire}), Algiers is the best foal produced by his accomplished dam, the Platini (Ger) mare Antara (Ger). Earning black type in no less than five countries, the mare was the most highly rated 3-year-old filly of her year in Germany, with a win in the G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit. She also earned Group 1 placings in Italy, France and England. Besides Algiers, she has three other winners to her credit, with the winning 4-year-old Frankel (GB) gelding Wild Tiger (GB) being her last reported foal.
