Zarak’s Crown Princesse Wins The Cleopatre

Providing another boost to TDN Rising Star Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), Haras de Saint-Julien and Regula Vannod's Crown Princesse (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}–Lovemedo {Fr}, by Zafeen {Fr}) stepped up on two prior efforts to capture Friday's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud. Four-lengths second to that Fabre giant on debut over 9 1/2 furlongs on Chantilly's Polytrack in February, the Fabrice Chappet-trained homebred went back to the same track, trip and surface to break her maiden last month and entered this 10 1/2-furlong Prix de Diane pointer only as a lukewarm 11-1 shot.

Anchored with one behind early by Ioritz Mendizabal, the chestnut had to wait for room at the top of the straight as the eventual runner-up Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}) ran into a dead end on the rail. In the open in time to get to the front approaching the furlong pole, she stayed on strongly to score by half a length from the unlucky second, with 3/4 of a length back to the long-time leader Heartache Tonight (Fr) (Recorder {GB}) in third.

“You can't really fault this filly since her debut when she was beaten by one with great potential, as she has since proven,” Chappet said. “We will enjoy that, see how she comes out of the race and take it day by day before deciding on her next race. She is not in the [G1 Prix] Saint-Alary, not in the Diane. We shall see.”

Pedigree Notes

Crown Princesse's dam Lovemedo, who was runner-up in the Listed Prix la Sorellina, is a half-sister to the Listed Prix de Bagatelle winner Mary's Precedent (Fr) (Storming Home {GB}) who produced another Sorellina runner-up in Mary's France (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}). The family features the G1 Prix
de l'Arc de Triomphe and G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and his half-sister, the multiple grade I-winning Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf heroine and champion Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). Lovemedo's 2-year-old filly by Meshaheer is named Love Her (Fr).

Zoffany Filly A New Rising Star After Newbury Romp

In his first season training in his own right, Jack Channon has at least one very smart individual on his hands as the newcomer Gather Ye Rosebuds (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}–Chelsey Jayne {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) spreadeagled an assembly of well-bred 3-year-old fillies in Friday's 10-furlong Dreweatts Maiden Fillies' S. at Newbury to earn a TDN Rising Star tag. Slowly away under Connor Beasley, the 33-1 shot who races for Linda Shanahan and Emily Magnier was quickly able to gain a pitch tracking the leader before moving to the front approaching the final two furlongs. Extending clear from the well-regarded Amo Racing newcomer Maman Joon (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) soon after, the granddaughter of Lady Lahar (GB) (Fraam {GB}) who captured the Futurity S. for Mick Channon when it was a group 3 in the millennium year hit the line with 9 1/2 lengths to spare over that Richard Hannon trainee, who was in turn 2 1/2 lengths in front of Meon Valley's experienced Mistral Star (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a daughter of the Oaks and Irish Oaks runner-up Shirocco Star (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}).

“It was just a matter of keeping her in her rhythm on this sort of ground, but she ran straight as a gun barrel and travelled really strongly–she gave me a good feel,” the winning rider said.

“I was with Paul Shanahan at the Newmarket sales when Mick Channon came in and we started chatting,” MV Magnier told TDN Europe.

“We asked him was there anything that caught his eye. He mentioned a very athletic filly by Zoffany out of a Galileo mare in Charlie Vigors draft at Hillwood. He had trained a lot of the family and he suggested we buy her.

“We have known the Channon family a long time and they are great people. We noticed it was bred by Barry Walters who is a long-standing client of Coolmore , so we ended up buying her and Mick explained that he was handing over the yard to his son Jack who would train her. That's exactly how it happened.”

Gather Ye Rosebuds is the fifth TDN Rising Star for the much-missed Zoffany, whose others include his G2 Mill Reef S.-winning 3-year-old son Sakheer (Ire) who is a leading player in the upcoming 2000 Guineas and the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. hero Thunder Moon (Ire).

Gather Ye Rosebuds is a half-brother to the former West Ilsley star Certain Lad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}), who took the G3 Strensall S. and was placed in the G2 Huxley S. and G2 Railway S. The aforementioned Lady Lahar was one of the better early Mick Channon trainees and also placed in the G2 Falmouth S. and G2 Cherry Hinton S. before producing the G3 Prix du Pin winner and G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua runner-up Jallota (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), the Listed Montrose Fillies' S. winner Classic Legend (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and the G1 Nassau S. third Rawdaa (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}). Chelsey Jayne's 2-year-old colt Standbackandlook (GB) (U S Navy Flag) was a prescient 45,000gns purchase by Richard Knight Bloodstock at the Book 2 Sale.

Godolphin’s Nine-Time Group 1 Winner Anamoe Retired To Darley Kelvinside

Godolphin homebred Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss–Anamato {Aus}, by Redoute's Choice {Aus}), a nine-time Group 1 winner, has been retired from racing and will stand at Darley Kelvinside in the Hunter Valley. The most successful horse to ever race at Group 1 level in the royal blue, the November-born foal will stand for A$121,000 (inc. GST) at the operation's New South Wales-based stud.

Godolphin trainer James Cummings said, “Our team is proud of all he has achieved during his racing career. He has never let us down and has been there for us at every start. We wish him all the best in his retirement and we can't wait to seeing his progeny coming through the stables in the years to come.

“It has been an immense honour and privilege for our team to care for Anamoe and guide him through his racing career. His health has always been our top priority and we take great pride in retiring him in such excellent condition.”

Only the second horse in over 20 years to win top-flight races at two, three and four in his native land, Anamoe was placed in both the G1 Blue Diamond S. and the G1 Golden Slipper S. prior to claiming the G1 Sires' Produce S. by three lengths as a juvenile. At three the G1 Caulfield Guineas and G1 Rosehill Guineas went his way before he took second, with interference, in the G1 Cox Plate. Last August marked the first of four consecutive Group 1 race victories in the Winx S. He added the George Main S., Might And Power, and Cox Plate in succession. In the Australian autumn, his record was further bolstered by scores in the G1 Chipping Norton S. and G1 George Ryder S. His career finale was a good third in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. earlier this month and he retires with a record of 25-14-5-3 and $7,710,095 in earnings.

Vin Cox, Managing Director of Godolphin in Australia, added, “It is bittersweet to see Anamoe retire from the racetrack. As an iconic figure for Godolphin and the world of horseracing, he leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten and he has nothing more to prove.

“The trifecta of performance, pedigree, and attitude are the most critical factors breeders consider and he possesses them all in spades. As he embarks on his new journey on the prestigious Darley roster, there's no doubt that he is the most sought after and exceptional stallion Australia has ever seen.”

Earlier this year, the Southern Hemisphere 4-year-old had been nominated for the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury next month, and he was also under consideration for a Royal Ascot bid as recently as Apr. 13 before connections decided to call time on his career.

The eighth foal out of G1 Australian Oaks heroine Anamato, who also ran third in the GI American Oaks Invitational S. in America, the bay is a half-brother to Irish stakes winner and G3 Weld Park S. second Anamba (GB) (Shamardal). Anamoe's extended family includes G1 Oakleigh Plate hero Drum (Aus) (Maurauding {NZ}) and Australian Champion Older Horse Grand Armee (Aus) (Hennessy), as well as the New Zealand Champion 2-Year-Old Yourdeel (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}).
