Champion Kalanisi Dies at 27

Champion Kalanisi (Ire) (Doyoun {Ire}–Kalamba {Ire}, by Green Dancer) passed away earlier this week at the Flood family's Boardsmill Stud, the stud announced on Friday. He was 27.

Bred by His Highness the Aga Khan's Studs in Ireland and trained by first Luca Cumani and then Sir Michael Stoute, he was crowned the 2000 American Champion Grass Horse after a season which saw him take the G2 Queen Anne S., run second in the G1 Eclipse S. and G1 International S. both to Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat), before returning to the winner's circle in the G1 Champion S. and GI Breeders' Cup Turf. Placed twice more at the highest level in 2001, he retired after 11 starts and was never unplaced with $2,148,836 in career earnings.

William and John Flood of Boardsmill said on Thursday, “We are sad to announce the passing of our stalwart sire Kalanisi, who died suddenly in his paddock this week. He had been enjoying his well-earned retirement in his paddock here for the past few years. Kalanisi was a real favourite with everyone in the yard and with visitors too. He was a huge attraction with both racing fans and breeders during the ITM Stallion Trail every year. He has a final crop of 25 three year olds and he has 3 representatives of this crop on offer at both the Goffs Arkle Sale and also at the Tattersalls Derby Sale.”

First a resident of the Aga Khan's Giltown Stud in Ireland before moving to Boardsmill in 2008 after being purchased by the Flood family, Kalanisi sired five stakes winners on the Flat, but his runners excelled under National Hunt rules. Some of his best are Kalashnikov (Ire), Fayonagh (Ire) and Barters Hill (Ire). His dozen stakes winners as a Flat broodmare sire include Roxoterra (Brz) (Gol Tricolor {Brz}), a Group 1 winner in Brazil, and G1 Prix Jean Romanet heroine Aristia (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Pensioned in 2020, his youngest foals are 4-year-olds.

His dam's first foal, the homebred is a half-brother to Group 2 winner and dual Group 1-placed Kalaman (Ire) (Desert Prince {Ire}) and is from the extended family of Southern Hemisphere Group 1 winners Rockdale (NZ) (Danroad {Aus}) and Fanatic (NZ) (Shocking {Aus}).

Golden Horn Colt Wins The Cocked Hat

Following in the steps of Lionel (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) 12 months ago, Normandie Stud's homebred Gregory (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) emulated that half-brother's success in Goodwood's Listed British EBF 40th Anniversary Cocked Hat S. on Friday. Heavily-supported into 4-7 favouritism having brushed aside decent yardsticks on debut over nearly 12 furlongs at Haydock in April, the John and Thady Gosden-trained bay raced behind the leading duo early. Notably unhappy on the unique terrain four out, he nevertheless kept responding to Rob Havlin's urgings to get on top passing two out and score ultimately comfortably by three lengths from the similarly once-raced Haggas runner Klondike (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) as class told.

 

Gregory is the third foal and second runner for the G2 Park Hill S.-winning dam Gretchen, whose yearling colt by Kingman (GB) will bear the name Kenneth (GB) and whose colt foal by Pinatubo (Ire) has yet to be handed his. The second dam Dolores (GB) (Danehill) was successful in the Listed Conqueror S. here, was second in the Sun Chariot when it was a group 2 and third in the G1 Coronation S. She was responsible for the G1 Irish St Leger dead-heater and outright G2 Yorkshire Cup and G2 Prix Foy winner Duncan (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), the G2 Doncaster Cup scorer Samuel (GB) (Sakhee) and the stakes producer Deirdre (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) who finished third behind no less than Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) in this card's Listed Height of Fashion S. in 2010.

Champion NH Sire Flemensfirth Dies At 31

Flemensfirth (Alleged–Ethelreda {GB}, by Diesis {GB}), who was a two-time champion sire in the jumping sphere, died at The Beeches Stud on Friday. The pensioned Coolmore stallion was 31.

Bred by Mill Ridge Farm, the Mar. 16 foal was a $45,000 Keeneland November weanling turned $290,000 Keeneland September yearling when sold to Darley Stud Management from the Mill Ridge Sales consignment. Trained by John Gosden, Flemensfirth won on debut at two, before taking the G1 Prix Lupin as a 3-year-old in 1995 and the G1 Premio Roma at four in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed. Retired to The Beeches Stud in 1998, he carried a mark of 9-5-1-0 and $368,739 in earnings to stud with him.

“Flemensfirth was a fantastic stallion and a great character who will be sadly missed by everyone here,” said Robert McCarthy. “We are extremely grateful to all the staff here along with our vets and farriers who took such good care of him throughout his time at the Beeches. We would also like to thank all the breeders who supported him and made him champion sire and to the Magnier Family who entrusted us with him. He covered 22 full seasons before enjoying his retirement in great health right until the end. He was in his paddock until 9 o'clock last night.”

Known primarily as a sire of top-class jumpers, Flemensfirth's best progeny include G1 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Imperial Commander (Ire), Flemenstar (Ire), Tidal Bay (Ire), Lostintranslation (Ire), Tornado Flyer (Ire), Colreevy (Ire), Relegate (Ire), Total Enjoyment (Ire), and Royal Ascot winner Jennies Jewel (Ire).

From the family of GI Frizette S. heroine Bundler (Raise A Native), the bay was also related to GI Santa Barbara H. heroine Mountain Bear (GB) (Welsh Pageant {Fr}). His final crop of foals were born in 2019.

Injunction Granted to Curb Derby Disruption

Following forewarned threats of action from the protest group Animal Rising during the Derby meeting, The Jockey Club, which owns Epsom Downs Racecourse, has been granted a High Court injunction in which prohibits acts of intentional disruption.

Granted after a hearing on Friday, the injunction prohibits individuals from entering onto the racetrack and carrying out other acts which would intentionally disrupt the races. This includes disruptive action in the parade ring and on the horse walk out to the track, throwing objects onto the course, and intentionally endangering any person during the meeting of June 2 and 3. Those found to be in breach of the court order could face fines or imprisonment.

“Our number one priority will always be to ensure that the safety of all our equine and human participants and racegoers, officials and our own employees is not compromised,” said The Jockey Club's CEO Kevin Truesdale.

“Animal Rising have repeatedly made it explicitly clear that they intend to break the law and disrupt The Derby Festival and that left us with no choice but to seek this injunction, having consulted with a number of stakeholders including Surrey Police.

“We will never tolerate a repeat of the illegal disruption we saw at Aintree on Grand National Day and we welcome today's High Court ruling, which provides us with an additional layer of security to combat the threat of such dangerous and reckless behaviour.”

He added, “We believe everyone should have the right to peaceful protest and have offered Animal Rising an area near the entrance of Epsom Downs Racecourse to express their views in a law-abiding way. However, anyone who attempts to disrupt the race or compromise the safety of horses or humans will be dealt with robustly by our security teams and the police.

“As such I now urge Animal Rising to abandon any plans to breach security at The Derby Festival and respect the legitimate right of the thousands of people who will join us at Epsom Downs and the millions of people watching at home and around the world to enjoy the sport they love uninterrupted.”

In April, the Grand National was delayed by 15 minutes after protestors broke onto the course and attempted to attach themselves to the fences. Protestors were also recently removed from an evening meeting at Doncaster, and from last year's Derby.
