Smart Juvenile Stakes Winners Among First Entries For Goffs London Sale

A trio of stakes-winning 2-year-olds are among the highlights of the initial entries released for the Goffs London Sale, held in association with Privat 3 Money. Set for Monday, June 19, the sale is limited to 20 entries and the complete catalogue will be unveiled on Monday, June 12.

Theresa Marnane's Givemethebeatboys (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), a winner of the G3 Marble Hill S., and Tipperary winner Supersonic Man (GB) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) are two of the entries. The duo are trained by Jessica Harrington, with the latter also carrying Marnane silks.

Con Marnane said, “They're two fine, big, strong colts with real chances at Royal Ascot. Givemethebeatboys is very special, he is the second highest rated 2-year-old in Ireland with Timeform and he goes to the [G2] Coventry S. for which he's currently 10-1.

“Supersonic Man is an extremely powerful fast colt and is as tough as nails.  He has a great chance in either the Windsor Castle or the [G2] Norfolk S.

“We've sold two horses at the London Sale before, Forever In Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) who went on to be second in the G1 Commonwealth Cup just days later, and the other was Real Appeal (Ger) (Sidestep {Aus}) who came out and won a Group 2 and Group 3. It's such a unique sale, and Goffs do a fantastic job in bringing in so many of the world's biggest buyers.”

Another entry is Sunday's Listed Prix la Fleche hero The Fixer (Ire) (No Nay Never), while No Nay Mets (Ire) (No Nay Never) won a stakes at Gulfstream Park in May. There are also breeding rights on offer for Havana Grey (GB) and Soldier's Call (GB), as well as a half-sister to G1 Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) carrying to Teofilo on Southern Hemisphere time.

Just Beautiful To Skip Royal Ascot, As Breeders’ Cup Mile In Play

Group 2 winner Just Beautiful (GB) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) will not participate at Royal Ascot, and will instead point toward targets later in the summer with a trip to the Breeders' Cup also a possibility, trainer Paddy Twomey revealed on Friday.

The 5-year-old Moyglare Stud colourbearer ran fifth in the G3 Athasi S. at the Curragh in early May, before taking the G2 Lanwades Stud S. later in the month. The G1 Falmouth S., as well as the G1 Prix Rothschild–both in July–and the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest in August are potential targets for the progressive bay.

Twomey said, “She's not going [to Ascot]. I would say she will go to Deauville maybe. We may look at the Falmouth, but she might go to France for the Prix Maurice De Gheest or Prix Rothschild.”

The trainer added, “The long-term aim would be the [GI] Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita [in November].”

The Fixer to London Sale En Route to Ascot

One of the quickest juveniles out of the blocks in Europe this season has been The Fixer (Ire), who is trained in Chantilly by Francis Graffard and is now en route for Royal Ascot. Whether or not the young son of No Nay Never appears there in the same colours in which he won Sunday's Listed Prix La Flèche remains to be seen, however, as he will first go under the hammer at the Goffs London Sale on the eve of the royal meeting.

The Fixer is out of the Group 3-placed Kodiac (GB) mare Fixette (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who was herself fast and early, winning on her 900m debut at Saint-Cloud in April. Her son has followed suit, and has already made four starts, winning twice after being runner-up on debut on March 23. It is a family with which Graffard is already very familiar.

“I trained his dam, and she was very sharp and precocious, and then I had the brother, and he was the same,” he says.

The brother in question is Faro De San Juan (Ire), who became the first winner for his sire Almanzor (Fr) two years ago.

Graffard continues, “It's a very sharp family, and we don't breed horses like that very much in France, so it is hard to find horses of this profile.

“Another aspect is that the [French] premiums are very high on two-year-olds. A lot of people are looking for horses with premiums. On one hand we don't breed this type of horse and on the other hand everybody is looking for premiums. So the early sprint races can be easy for owners to win.”

After failing to reach his reserve in the ring at Arqana's August Sale, The Fixer was bought privately by Graffard and his wife Lisa-Jane for €95,000 and now races for a syndicate which includes the couple under their Stamford Bloodstock banner. The group of fellow owners features Guillaume de Saint-Seine, who is enjoying a particularly good year so far as he is also the part-owner of Angers (Fr) (Seabhac),  the recent winner of the German 2,000 Guineas.

Graffard says, “At the sales with Lisa I always to try to find this type of horse. The Fixer ticked a lot of boxes but he didn't have the premiums, and that makes a huge difference, but we took the risk, and at some stage you need to go for the right horse, not for the premiums only. But if you buy horses on spec without premiums it is always harder.”

The Fixer set about making things easier when, in mid-April, he posted an eight-length victory at Saint-Cloud on his second start. However, things didn't go so smoothly the next time he ventured to Paris.

“My plan was to aim him towards Ascot, so I organised the programme around that and he ran in a conditions race at Longchamp and was very hot favourite,” Graffard explains. “He knocked himself down in the stalls and shouldn't have run. But they opened the gates, and he completely wasn't in the race. He's usually very sharp and this time he couldn't do it. He finished fourth, and I was very down, but when he came in he had scrapes everywhere, on his knees and all around his head, so there was a reason that he ran so poorly.

“I had the plan to run in the Listed race and fortunately we managed, with the team, to get him right in time for this. We saw the real The Fixer at Chantilly.”

With a trip to Ascot for the G2 Norfolk S. now very much back on the agenda, the decision was taken this week to enter The Fixer for Goffs' boutique auction a week on Monday.

“Everybody was happy again at Chantilly, but after Longchamp, and the experience of how high it can go and how low it can go, we said there was nothing to lose to go to the sales,” says the trainer. “If he is sold, we are happy, and if he is not sold we are happy because we run on Thursday in the Norfolk.”

He adds, “For a French horse to have had four runs already at this time of the year is quite unusual. At Chantilly, we beat those who came to challenge us, but there are very few five-furlong races in the French programme so we have to travel now.”

Calmly Bids to Emulate Grand-Dam Zomaradah in Oaks d’Italia Tattersalls

The round of Italian Classics continues on Sunday with the G2 Oaks d'Italia, which this year is sponsored by Tattersalls for the first time.

Hollie Doyle is set to take the ride on the G3 Premio Regina Elena (Italian 1,000 Guineas) winner Shavasana (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who is trained by Stefano Botti and has been purchased since her Classic success by Katsumi Yoshida.

She will face 13 rivals at San Siro racecourse, including the second and third in the Premio Regina Elena, Estrosa (Ire) (Sioux Nation) and Aquila Reale (GB) (New Bay {GB}).

Peter Schiergen won last year's Oaks d'Italia with Nachtrose (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who is set to run in Saturday's G3 Lester Piggott S. at Haydock, and this year four German-trained runners are declared for the race along with three from France.

Heading the French trio is the Dubawi (Ire) filly Calmly (GB), a winner for King Charles at Kempton in January when trained by John and Thady Gosden but who now races for Team Valor, in whose colours she won the Listed Premio Maria Incisa Della Rochetta in Milan last month. Calmly, whose paternal grand-dam Zomaradah (GB) (Deploy {GB}) won the Oaks d'Italia in 1998, is trained by Jerome Reynier, who also won the G2 Premio Presidente Della Repubblica in Rome with Skalleti (Fr) a day after the filly's victory at San Siro.

With a prize fund of €388,000, there will also be vouchers offered by Tattersalls, for 15,000gns and 7,500gns to the owners of the winner and runner-up respectively.

Commenting on the inaugural sponsorship of the Italian Classic, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “Tattersalls has a long-standing and hugely valued relationship with Italian racing, and we are delighted to add the Italian Oaks to the Tattersalls portfolio of Classic and Group 1 sponsorships in Europe. Italian buyers have always played a prominent part in the yearling and breeze-up sales at Tattersalls and we are confident that the valuable bonuses will be well received.”
