Seeking Gold Makes 78k On Tattersalls Online

Seeking Gold (Ire) (Havana Gold {Ire}), who is rated 90, was purchased for 78,000gns during the Tattersalls Online June Pop-Up Sale on Friday.

The 3-year-old colt was secured by Debbie Mountain and Qatari-based owner Hassan Al Abdulmalik, and is set to race in that country.

Mountain said, “We are very pleased. He is a nice horse and he looks like he is definitely a fast ground horse. He will come to Qatar. He has a good pedigree and looks like he will hopefully be effective from a mile to 10 furlongs. That's what we will be aiming for and he looks like a nice prospect for the future for us here. I don't think we will run him next week at Royal Ascot but I would imagine he will run again before he leaves the United Kingdom although we might save him for when he makes it over here, where his main targets will be.”

Seeking Gold won as a juvenile, and was also fourth in the Listed Ascendant S. at Haydock. His dam is a half-sister to Hong Kong's G2 Jockey Club Mile winner Wade Giles (Ire)/Destined For Glory (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}).

John Hernon Named as Manager of Childwickbury Stud

John Hernon has been appointed manager of Paul and Sally Flatt's Childwickbury Stud in Hertfordshire.

Formerly the yearling manager at Cheveley Park Stud, Hernon grew up at his family's stud farm in Wicklow in Ireland and completed the Irish National Stud's Management Course before gaining further experience on stud farms in Australia and the UK. He was also assistant trainer to the late Harry 'Tom' Thomson Jones in Newmarket and assistant stud manager and racing manager to Peter Goulandris at Hesmonds Stud in Sussex.

“We are delighted that John Hernon is joining Childwickbury Stud,” said Paul and Sally Flatt. “He brings extensive knowledge and experience of looking after high-quality bloodstock from foaling to the sale of yearlings.

“We are really pleased that he has made his next home Childwickbury Stud after being at Cheveley Park Stud for 14 years and we look forward to him working with us to achieve our plans for the stud, both with our own bloodstock and our clients.”

John Hernon said, “I am very excited to be joining Childwickbury Stud at this time. I am looking forward to working closely with Mr and Mrs Flatt and their stud team as well as our clients to develop the stud's profile and strengthen its position in the industry.

“Surrounded by the memorial stones of multiple Classic and Group-winning horses in the main yard dating back to Sunstar in 1911, I see my new role as a privilege and great responsibility. I look forward to shaping Childwickbury Stud's future in the bloodstock industry with Mr and Mrs Flatt and expanding their operation.”

Set on 250 acres near St Albans, Childwickbury Stud was built in 1888 by Sir John Blundell Maple and sold to Jack Barnato Joel in 1906. In 1940, the latter's son Jim Joel inherited the historic farm, which is the birthplace of the Derby winners Sunstar, Pommern, Humorist and Royal Palace, as well as the Grand National winner Maori Venture.

The stud was later bought by the Marquesa de Moratella, owner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner The Fellow and breeder of Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner Tin Horse, before being bought by the Flatts in 2011.

Friday’s Observations: Brother to Sealiway Starts at Sandown

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Observations features a brother to Group 1 winner Sealiway.

14.40 Sandown, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, 7fT
SUNWAY (FR) (Galiway {GB}) is a fascinating newcomer in a potentially informative juvenile exchange, being a full-brother to the G1 Champion S. and G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero Sealiway (Fr) who made €300,000 at the Arqana August Sale. Debuting for his breeder Guy Pariente and Thomas Lines, the March-foaled bay is in the hands of David Menuisier who has opted to take on some experienced rivals in the race won two years ago by Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Two of them are the Charlie Appleby-trained Yarmouth fourth Inner City (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the 1.1million gns Book 1 graduate and son of the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Urban Fox (GB) (Foxwedge {Aus}), and the Gosdens' Royal runner Crown Estate (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). He is a son of the 2019 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Castle Lady (Ire) (Shamardal) who was also fourth on debut behind TDN Rising Star Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) at Haydock last Friday.

16.15 Cork, Mdn, €16,000, 2yo, f, 6fT
BRILLIANT (IRE) (Gleneagles {Ire}) is a significant debutante for Aidan O'Brien, being a half-sister to the four-times group 1-winning Sussex and July Cup heroine Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never). A 650,000gns Book 1 purchase, the April-foaled chestnut is in deep against Flaxman Stables and Coolmore's Donnacha O'Brien-trained Mysteries (Ire) (No Nay Never), a Donnacha O'Brien-trained relative of Sadler's Wells' G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Saffron Walden (Fr) and fellow sire Dolphin Street (Fr) who was third to Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Matrika (Ire) (No Nay Never) at The Curragh last month.

Momentum Continues At Part 2 Of The Goffs Arkle Sale

Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby has said that Part 2 of the Goffs Arkle Sale lived up to its billing after turnover climbed 7% on last year to €3,333,500. The average also climbed 10% to €19,725 with the median up 6% to €17,000 while the clearance rate dropped 3% to 79% with 169 of the 215 lots offered finding new homes.

Beeby said, “Our record-breaking Part 1 of the Arkle Sale could have been a hard act to follow but today's Part 2 has very much kept up the momentum with another strong set of results. This is especially pleasing when last year recorded a 59% rise, so to build on that is quite something.”

“As with Part 1 we are indebted to our vendors who chose Goffs for another fine bunch of potential NH stars and it is gratifying that Arkle Part 2 is also very much a first-choice sale for increasing numbers. Indeed, the three days have clearly demonstrated that Kildare Paddocks has been the focus of the NH world with a huge influx of buyers from home, the UK and further afield as they now recognise that Goffs Arkle provides a significant portion of the best bred and best looking 3YOs to be offered each year.”

He added, “In fact, last year the Arkle Sale (as the Land Rover) sold the biggest share of select store horses which is quite some evolution and testament to the work of our superb NH Team who have liaised closely and diligently with NH breeders to make this sale unmissable for buyers of NH quality. It is also very pleasing that so many of our sale graduates perform at the highest level on the racecourse and at the season's biggest meetings year after year. Once again, the closeness of the average and median prices has pointed to a sale of consistency, strength and depth and we salute our vendors for reading reading the market so well and extend sincere thanks to every buyer for their patronage.”
