George Main Renamed in Honor of King Charles III, The Everest Gets Purse Boost

Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club (ATC) announced on Sunday that the G1 George Main S. will be replaced by the G1 King Charles III S. at Royal Randwick starting this year. The King Charles III S. is named in honour of His Majesty The King and will be run over 1600 metres under weight-for-age conditions and carry a prize purse of A$5 million, making it the world's richest weight-for-age mile event. Last year's George Main S., won by Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss), was worth A$1 million in 2022.

The King Charles will run on Oct. 14 along with the world's second-richest Thoroughbred race, the A$20 million The Everest (which rises from A$15 million). The entire card offers prizemoney of nearly A$35 million and includes the A$2 million The Kosciuszko, the A$1 million Silver Eagle, the A$500,000 St Leger S. and the A$250,000 G3 Angst S. Previously, the George Main S. was held two weeks prior to the G1 Epsom H.

“The King Charles III Stakes creates a new level of excitement for the Sydney Everest Carnival, with a feature open-age mile race boosting an already mouth-watering Everest Day meeting,” Racing NSW Chairman Russell Balding said. “It is also befitting of Royal Randwick to have a feature race in spring named in honour of His Majesty, to complement the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in autumn, with Royal Randwick being Australia's only Royal Racecourse.

“At $20 million of prizemoney, The TAB Everest is now the second-richest race in the world and the richest race on turf. This further increase in prizemoney is not only recognition of The TAB Everest as being the highest-rated race in Australia, but also of the success this event has created in flow-on benefits throughout the entire NSW Thoroughbred industry for the whole of the year.”

New Individual World Pool Race Turnover Record Set at Royal Ascot

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) announced on Sunday that its World Pool, the globe's largest commingled horse racing pools, broke the record for single race turnover in a World Pool race when HK$66.2 million (£6.6m) was bet into Saturday's G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee S., eclipsing the HK$66.1 million wagered in the 2022 G1 Betfred Derby. Saturday's total turnover of HK$323.4 million (£32.5m) is the third-highest World Pool day of all time, checking in behind the Friday (HK$351.8m) and Saturday (HK$340.9m) of Royal Ascot in 2022.

The other two biggest pools of the week were in Friday's G1 Commonwealth Cup and the Tuesday's G2 Ribblesdale Stakes, both drawing HK$50.5m (£5.1m). Total World Pool turnover for Royal Ascot 2023 hit HK$1.5 billion (£154m), slightly down from the HK$1.6 billion wagered a year ago, which was an increase on 2021's figure of 35%.

“Royal Ascot produced exceptional racing once again and it is clear that international racing fans have embraced the quality and depth of fields across the five days,” Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Chief Executive Officer at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said. “World Pool offers the best international racing for customers across the globe. In the four years since we launched World Pool at Royal Ascot, the Hong Kong Jockey Club has forged–and enhanced – a host of World Pool partnerships around the world and we are delighted at the significant progress achieved so far.”

On Saturday, the HKJC also announced that it has renewed a five-year World Pool partnership agreement with Ascot Racecourse to continue to promote racing as a global sport. Ascot and the HKJC formed the first World Pool partnership in 2019 and the new agreement runs through 2028.

The next World Pool event will be the G1 Irish Derby at The Curragh on Sunday, July 2.

Frankel Filly Strikes In New York

Last autumn's GII Sands Point S. heroine Skims (GB) (Frankel {GB}) ran out an easy winner in New York for breeder Andrew Rosen and trainer Shug McGaughey earlier this month (video).

Now with four victories to her name, the $235,000 Keeneland September buy-back is the seventh foal out of Royal Decree (Street Cry {Ire}), and she is a half-sister to G2 Vintage S. hero War Decree (War Front) and the stakes-placed Noble Quality (Elusive Quality). Her second dam is the GI American Oaks Invitational and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. heroine Ticker Tape (Royal Applause {GB}). This is also the family of crack sprinter Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who won the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, and G1 Prix Morny winner Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate).

No sire in the world is having a better few days than Juddmonte's Frankel, who fired in three Group 1 winners at Royal Ascot. However, his American record is also nothing to sneeze at, with 25 winners from 43 runners (58%). His 10 stakes winners there (23%) are anchored by GI Belmont Oaks heroine McKulick (GB).

 

 

Masseto Returns A Winner After Long Break

J. Stable LLC's Masseto (GB) (Territories {Ire}) won a Woodbine affair just over a year after his last winning effort at that venue last Thursday for trainer Mark Casse (video).

Bred by Ciaran Paterson, the 62,000gns Tattersalls December foal was sold for 65,000gns out of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Owned by J Carthy for his first two starts, the former Donnacha O'Brien trainee was placed twice at group level in Ireland.

The third foal out of the winning Never Change (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), the 4-year-old colt is from the same family as G2 Great Voltigeur S. hero Sacrament (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), who was a son of the stakes winner Blessed Event (Ire) (Kings Lake), herself second in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks.

Darley stallion Territories has now sired two winners from five runners in the U.S. (40%). His best is the GIII Beaugay S. heroine Rougir (Fr), who also won Woodbine's GI E. P. Taylor S. in Canada.

Snellen Provides Laroche With 20/20 Vision of Success

ASCOT, UK–This year's Royal Ascot has certainly been a successful one for a number of American owners, but Lindsay Laroche is no stranger to big-race success in Europe. The victory of Snellen (Ire) in the Chesham S. was that bit extra special for the Californian, however, as he is also the breeder of the daughter of Expert Eye (GB), who is the first foal of her dam Illumined (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}).

The seven-year-old mare raced in the colours of another owner-breeder, George Strawbridge, for whom she won twice and was listed-placed before being sold for 170,000gns at the Tattersalls December Sale in 2020. It is a family with some smart Ascot form in the book as Illumined is a half-sister to Night Lagoon (Ger) (Lagunas {GB}), whose son Novellist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) still holds the 1m4f track record, set when he won the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. in 2013.

“It's such a thrill for us,” said Laroche, who had travelled to Ascot from San Francisco with his wife Deborah. “Daithi Harvey, my good friend and bloodstock manager, picked out the mare Illumined with a little bit of my help. We loved the German blood and the distance, and Expert Eye–well they seemed to work well together today at least.”

He continued, “We're very excited because we have a Blue Point (Ire) yearling filly and a Gleneagles (Ire) colt foal, and the mare has had three February 10, 8 and 12 babies, so she's a machine.”

Illumined boards at David and Tamso Cox's Baroda Stud alongside another of Laroche's mares, Princess Yaiza (Ire), who, like Snellen, was a Gavin Cromwell trainee. She won the G2 Prix de Royallieu on Arc weekend in 2018.

Laroche said, “[Illumined] is in foal to Bayside Boy (Ire). There were deals required to get to New Bay (GB)! 

“But it's very exciting: a shout out to the thrill to come here to race in England, and in Ireland. We're based in California and we love the racing there but this is very, very special.

“Princess Yaiza was probably our biggest thrill until today, if not tied, as she won at Longchamp. She has a baby and another one coming.”

Another Harvey purchase, Sunset Shiraz (Ire) (Time Test {GB}), who was placed in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and runner-up in both the G2 Debutante S. and G3 Park S., will join the broodmare band next year.

In his home country, Laroche, who also races under the Highland Yard banner, has horses in training with Christophe Clement. His colours have been carried to success there by the GIII Modesty H. winner Walk Close ((Tapit) among others.

The Chesham winner's name was well chosen considering her sire Expert Eye, as she takes her title from the famed Dutch ophthalmologist Herman Snellen, designer of the Snellen Chart which features ever-decreasing rows of letters and which can be found in optician stores the world over. 

Laroche added, “People were asking before the race if I had pins and needles, but that was for her last race, the first race, when we wondering if she was any good. 

“Gavin has all these two-year-olds and they are all about the same, and he said, “I don't know if they are all good or if they are all bad.' So it was a thrill just to get here and to do this, but there were less nerves this time.”

After Saturday, one thing is pretty clear: neither Cromwell nor Laroche will need glasses to see that they have a special filly on their hands.
