Leopardstown Launch ‘Dublin to Bahrain’ Race Series

Leopardstown and the Bahrain Turf Club have announced the 'Dublin to Bahrain' race series that will grant race winners automatic eligibility for the 2023-24 running of the Bahrain Turf Series.

The first leg of the 'Dublin to Bahrain' race series takes place at Leopardstown on Thursday July 20.

The series expands Bahrain's existing sponsorship portfolio in Ireland, which is headlined by the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion S. and includes the Bahrain Turf Club Desmond S., both of which are run at Leopardstown.

The five races added to the Kingdom's sponsorship portfolio are four handicaps, including the €40,000 October Handicap, and the Listed Knockaire S.

The winner of each of the four handicap races will automatically be eligible for the Bahrain Turf Series, a ten-race series spread across five fixtures staged in Bahrain's domestic season.

Last season each race in the Bahrain Turf Series was worth £60,000, a figure set to rise again in 2023-24.

Meanwhile, the winners of the Desmond S. and the Knockaire S. will receive an invitation to the Bahrain International Trophy, run in November.

Shaikh Salman bin Rashed Al Khalifa, Bahrain Turf Club High Committee Representative, International Racing, said, “We are delighted to expand our involvement with Irish racing. The 'Dublin to Bahrain' race series is a great initiative that we have developed with our partners at Leopardstown. The aim is to increase awareness among Irish owners and trainers of our own Bahrain Turf Series, a valuable ten-race series that runs from December to February and caters for both sprint and middle distance horses.

“In addition, as well as sponsoring the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes, our support for two other pattern races provides further opportunities to promote the Bahrain International Trophy, the Kingdom's most valuable race.”

Murphy To Replace Dettori Aboard Chaldean In Sunday’s Prix Jean Prat

Oisin Murphy will take over from the suspended Frankie Dettori aboard 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Deauville.

Dettori will miss the ride after receiving a nine-day careless riding ban at Royal Ascot last month and that suspension will also rule him out of riding Emily Upjohn in the Coral-Eclipse on Saturday.

Murphy has never ridden Chaldean in public before but Barry Mahon, racing manager for Juddmonte, the owners of the top-notch colt, said once the Irishman was available to replace Dettori, connections were left with a straightforward decision.

“If everything is going okay with the horse and Andrew [Balding, trainer] is happy with him, the plan will hopefully be to run at Deauville and, as far as I am aware, Oisin Murphy will take the ride,” Mahon told the Nick Luck Daily Podcast.

He added, “Oisin is a top-class jockey and is part of Andrew's stable and we'll be delighted to have him on board. [Chaldean is] good, he came out of Ascot in great form and has only had two runs this year so is relatively fresh and he's in good shape.”

Shock Royal Ascot Winner Khaadem Is July Cup Bound

Shock Royal Ascot hero Khaadem (Ire) is likely to be supplemented for the Pertemps Network July Cup S. at Newmarket later this month providing conditions remain dry in the lead up to the race.

Charlie Hills' seven-year-old has always threatened to be a high-class speedster and finally landed a long-awaited Group One victory when running out an 80-1 winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at the royal meeting.

The son of Dark Angel (Ire) is reported to have bounced out of his Ascot run well and connections now appear keen to try to strike again while the iron is hot, with the Fitri Hay-owned gelding poised to be added to the line-up for the six-furlong contest on July 15.

“He's come of of Ascot really well. We haven't done much with him since, but he's been cantering and moving nicely,” said Hills. “It's taken a while to get the Group One, it was his ninth attempt someone told me.

“But we've always liked him a lot and especially when he won the Stewards' Cup as a three-year-old, he looked like he was going to be a really good horse. It's just taken a long time to get to where we are now.

“We didn't put him in the July Cup, but I would say if it stays dry there is a good possibility he will be supplemented for it.

“There are a couple of three-year-olds coming into the equation now which makes things more intriguing and it will be interesting to see how they do, but it's mostly similar types of horses that we beat the other day, so I think it's the obvious race to go for if it does stay dry. He loves fast ground so if it does stay dry, we will certainly have a good look at it.”
