Ramatuelle in Deep Against the Boys in the Morny

One of only two French-trained juveniles in Sunday's G1 Sumbe Prix Morny at Deauville, Infinity Nine Horses' TDN Rising Star Ramatuelle (Justify) will need to draw on a significant amount of her abundant talent to maintain her sequence in one of the best renewals of the six-furlong feature in recent years. Out on her own at the end of Chantilly's G3 Prix du Bois and G2 Prix Robert Papin, the Christopher Head trainee now has to stand up to a collective of the best sprinting colts from Britain and Ireland on ground softer than she has encountered so far.

“We can't wait to go to the Morny with her and it has been part of the plan since the beginning,” Head said. “I think she's the type of horse who can box with this calibre of horse at this time in the season. There are going to be two fillies, two French horses and lots of good opposition, but she's doing fine and all the lights are green for the Morny.”

With the track hit by significant rain on Friday, ability to get through tacky ground is going to be a bonus and while race-fitness may be an issue following his minor setback, Ballydoyle's G2 Coventry S.-winning TDN Rising Star River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) has at least proven that easy going is not a problem having won by 10 lengths on debut on soft at Navan in April.

Aidan O'Brien has his concerns, however. “He's good, I'm worried that he missed 10 days so he will run with a cloud over him,” he said. “I wouldn't be surprised at all if he did get tired. We are taking a chance on running him back, because if he doesn't run now he won't be out until the autumn. He came sounder quicker than we thought he would, he did a piece of work and that's why we let him take his chance, but there is a cloud over him. If he did run disappointing I wouldn't be surprised. He was lame for seven days, he came back sound but he missed all the work.”

It was soft when KHK Racing's Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) won the G2 Richmond S. during a rain-afflicted Qatar Goodwood Festival and there is a concern that Clive Cox withdrew Al Mohamediya Racing's G2 July S. winner Jasour (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) from that race due to the ground. Karl Burke will have less worries about conditions for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's Elite Status (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}), who bounced out of a third in the G2 Norfolk S. won by Valiant Force (Malibu Moon) to take the course-and-distance G3 Prix de Cabourg from the other French runner Sajir (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}).

Chris Wall, racing manager for KHK Racing, said of Vandeek, “We're not kidding ourselves, we know we're in at the deep end, but he's done nothing but improve and physically he is getting stronger all the time. The ground at Goodwood last time was very soft and while he coped with that, I think he will be better on a sounder surface. I think he's going to run a nice race.”

Clive Cox said of Jasour, “We were unhappy to run at Goodwood with a penalty in what was effectively heavy ground and with this race on the horizon it was a sensible manoeuvre not to run him there. We've been placed in the race since winning it with Reckless Abandon. Nando Parrado and Golden Horde ran well in the race, as well as Tis Marvellous. I'm just thrilled I have a horse of this calibre to be running in the race again and of course it would mean the world to be getting involved in the finish, which we hope he will.”

Rain Welcome For Via Sistina…

Connections of the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) were delighted to see the heavy rain ahead of the G1 Sumbe Prix Jean Romanet as she steps back up from a mile having been third in the G1 Falmouth S. at Newmarket's July Festival. In light of subsequent events, her six-length defeat of Al Husn (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Newmarket's G2 Dahlia S. in May looks even better than it did at the time and trainer George Boughey is approaching Sunday's race with confidence. “She had a little break after the Falmouth and I slightly regret running her back over a mile in hindsight,” he said. “She's a filly who hit the line really well in the Pretty Polly and arguably might get further, but she was an even-money shot and it was definitely worth a go. She added another bit of group one black-type to her pedigree and I think you will see the real Via Sistina back up at 10 furlongs.”

Testing ground would probably not have been what Andre Fabre wanted for Baron Edouard De Rothschild's G1 Prix Rothschild winner Mqse De Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), who is back up in trip having relished that mile trip. The Aga Khan's Darkaniya (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) had beaten her in Chantilly's 10 1/2-furlong Listed Prix de la Pepiniere last month and may be better suited to this test, while TDN Rising Star Above The Curve (American Pharoah) had Mqse De Sevigne two lengths in arrears in the G2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud in May. The trouble for her is that she failed to land a blow on Via Sistina in the Pretty Polly and couldn't handle Al Husn in Goodwood's G1 Nassau S. so like everything else is up against it tryin again to stop the Hillens' star mare.

Jannah Rose Back In Action…

Also at Deauville, the 10-furlong G2 Sumbe Prix Alec Head sees the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Jannah Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) re-emerge following her disappointing effort in the G1 Prix de Diane. That also applies to the G3 Prix Penelope-winning TDN Rising Star Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), one of the first of the Wildenstein-bred horses to run in the Wertheimer colours following their acquisition of the organisation's bloodstock.

‘Days Like This Are Very Special’: Bernick and Etreham Toast G2 Success

DEAUVILLE, France–Les Pavots may translate to poppies, but the winner of this year's G2 Prix du Calvados was named after a wine, and it is fair to assume that a drop or two may have been taken on Saturday to toast the success of a Franco-American partnership.

The collaboration may be relatively new, but the ownership between Nicolas de Chambure of Haras d'Etreham and Craig Bernick is the blending of two established families of the turf on each side of the Atlantic. Bernick's grandparents Leonard and Bernice Lavin founded Glen Hill Farm in Florida in 1967, while the Chambure family has been at Etreham in Normandy since the 1940s.

Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never), trained by Francis Graffard who took both group contests at Deauville on Saturday, made her winning debut back in May and has earned black type in each of her four starts since then. Bought privately from her breeder Coolmore, she was one of three fillies acquired by the partnership last year through agent Hubie de Burgh, and is the first to run.

“Hubie put it together, and did all the leg work on a few dozen horses,” said a delighted Bernick in the winner's enclosure at Deauville. “We picked some out and we were able to make a deal. The de Chambures are wonderful partners and know exactly what they are doing.”

He added, “The first time she ran she looked like a top filly and the next two races she got run off her feet a little bit. The Listed race was over a shorter distance and in the [G3 Prix du Bois] against Ramatuelle she wasn't as good, but last time over seven furlongs was the first time we took hold of her and she finished it out well, and today again. She's probably learning to run a bit and we are really excited to have her.”

Even without being a group winner Les Pavots has plenty to recommend her on paper, for not only is she a half-sister to the G1 Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) but her granddam All Too Beautiful (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) is a sister to Galileo (Ire) and was runner-up in the Oaks before winning the G3 Middleton S.

Bernick continued, “Francis is a great trainer and he has always said, even when she was getting beat, that he really liked the filly because she's so sound mentally. With No Nay Never over an Oasis Dream mare you wouldn't think distance, but her pedigree goes back to Urban Sea.

“She really lacks nothing. She's a beautiful filly with a great pedigree and now she's a Group 2 winner in her two-year-old year in Deauville. We're just over the moon to have her.”

Bernick also has horses in training in Ireland, notably the Fozzy Stack-trained homebred Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify), who won the GI Belmont Oaks when on her travels in July. He boards mares at Norelands Stud in Ireland as well as in France.

“We keep a couple of our own and a few together with Etreham and they're great,” he said of his French venture. “My family has been in the business since before I was born and Nicolas's family also has done much more than we have. They're great partners and Hubie has had a long relationship with the de Chambures, and fortunately we were able to tap into their relationship. Days like this are very special.”

Hubie de Burgh added, “It's very hard to buy into families like this. You just can't get your hands on them. They'll never sell her and she'll go to the best stallions in the world. It's the start of a long story.”

Bernick, who said he was “cautiously shopping” at Arqana, bought a Dubawi (Ire) filly on the opening night of the sale for €390,000 through de Burgh. Her dam Right Hand (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) is a half-sister to the Wertheimers' G1 Prix Vermeille winner Left Hand (GB), who is also by Dubawi.

Big Evs Supplemented to Nunthorpe Challenge

Big Evs (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}), winner of the Windsor Castle S. and later the G3 Jaeger Lecoultre Molecomb S., has been supplemented to the G1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe S. at York on Friday with Andrea Atzeni set to ride. Jason Hart, who was onboard for those two victories, maintains his partnership with three-time Group 1 winner Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night of Thunder {Ire}). Big Evs will be the only 2-year-old in contention.

“It's [been] a long time since a two-year-old has won the Nunthorpe [Kingsgate Native, 2007]. So, yes, it's a big ask for him, but hopefully he's going there with a very good chance at the weights. Jason doesn't ride as he is on Highfield Princess. Andrea Atzeni rides,” said conditioner Mick Appleby. “He's in good order. He did a good piece of work this morning and he'll probably have one more piece of work on Wednesday. I'm delighted with him.”

Deauville Stakes Double For Graffard Stable In Prix de Pomone Thriller

Francis Graffard trainee Melo Melo (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}–You Look So Good {GB}, by Excellent Art {GB}) had raced exclusively in stakes company in each of her six latest starts, bagging a career best in ParisLongchamp's Listed Prix Gold River in May when last seen, and continued on a rapid upward trajectory with a game success in Saturday's G2 Prix de Pomone at Deauville.

The 47-10 chance employed patient tactics and tracked the leaders in a midfield sixth through halfway in this staging post for the G1 Prix de Royallieu on Arc weekend and inched closer rounding the home turn. Coming under pressure at the top of the straight, she gained an edge approaching the final furlong and was driven out to bravely withstand the late lunge of stablemate Baiykara (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) by a short-neck in a thrilling finish. Juddmonte's G3 Prix de Royaumont victrix Ottery (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) did not enjoy the clearest of passages inside the final quarter-mile and ran on well to finish 3/4-of-a-length down in third.

“She was ready to run again and delivered nicely for a career high,” commented Graffard. “She likes it soft, she had the right conditions today and it was the perfect ride from Mickael [Barzalona]. With this performance, she has earned the right to try her chance in the [Sept. 30 G1] Prix Vermeille [at ParisLongchamp].”

Pedigree Notes
Melo Melo becomes the 18th pattern-race winner for her sire and is one of two produced by You Look So Good (GB) (Excellent Art {GB}), whose first is the G3 Curragh S. and GIII G3 Senorita S. victrix Treasuring (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}). Her dam is a full-sister to G2 Rockfel S. placegetter Gray Pearl (GB) and a half to G2 Goldene Peitsche and G3 Lotto Trophy victor Electric Beat (GB) (Shinko Forest {Ire}) and Listed Washington Singer S. third Blakey's Boy (GB) (Hawk Wing). You Look So Good is a granddaughter of Rossaldene (GB) (Mummy's Pet {Ire}), herself the dam of dual stakes-winning G1 Irish 2000 Guineas third Cape Town (Ire) (Desert Style {Ire}) as well as being the ancestress of G1 Queen Anne S. and G1 Prix de la Foret-winning sire Paco Boy (Ire) (Desert Style {Ire}). The February-foaled grey is kin to the unraced 2-year-old filly Sovereign Girl (GB) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire), a yearling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB) and and a weanling colt foal Too Darn Hot (GB).
