The Best Since Frankel? What The Ratings Say About City Of Troy

We can believe what our eyes are telling us. That was the verdict from Timeform on Monday, with the ratings gurus placing City Of Troy a joint second in terms of winning performances posted in the Dewhurst this century.

The one horse rated higher than Aidan O'Brien's bright young star? You guessed it, the mighty Frankel, who those closest to City Of Troy drew parallels with after that stunning victory at Newmarket on Saturday.

“He really is our Frankel,” said Michael Tabor, one of the part-owners in City Of Troy after the Dewhurst demolition.

“I know the way Aidan speaks. We're all optimists, but this horse is special. No question, he's the real deal.”

He added, “That's what we feel at this moment. Maybe down the line we'll have egg on our face, but I like to talk before the event and I really feel this horse could be anything.”

High praise indeed. It seems as though Tabor was not alone in his summarisation of the performance with Timeform rating City Of Troy 125p.

That puts him alongside Pinatubo, Teofilo and New Approach for what they achieved in their respective Dewhurst victories. Meanwhile, Frankel achieved a rating of 126 for his Dewhurst triumph in 2010.

City Of Troy has raced just three times and remains unbeaten after pulling over three lengths clear of the 107-rated Alyanaabi in the Group 1 contest.

The bookmakers were suitably impressed and slashed City Of Troy into even-money favouritism for next year's 2,000 Guineas. Not only that, but he is now just 5-2 to win the Derby, while some firms are quoting odds of 10-1 for City Of Troy to do what no horse has done since Nijinsky in 1970 by winning the Triple Crown.

To provide further context to what the figures suggests City Of Troy achieved on Saturday, horses like Too Darn Hot, Shamardal [124 apiece], Rock Of Gibraltar, Air Force Blue [123 apiece], Sir Percy and Dawn Approach [122 apiece] were all rated behind him.

The best since Frankel is how many key industry figures labelled City Of Troy after Saturday. The ratings would suggest the same.

Classy Son Of Mehmas Off To Stud: Lusail To Stand At Haras de Bouquetot

Haras de Bouquetot has a classy son of Mehmas (Ire) to look forward to in the stallion ranks for 2024 after announcing that the G2 Gimcrack S. winner Lusail (Ire) will join the roster.

Trained by Richard Hannon, Lusail also landed the G2 July S. as a juvenile. He was beaten just a head in the St James's Palace S. as a three-year-old and was also placed in the Prix Jean Prat that same season. He retires to stud aged four and will embark on stallion duties next year as a five-year-old.

Hannon heaped praise on the speedster upon his retirement on Monday, and said, “Lusail is a speed car, one of the easiest and most relaxed horses I have ever trained. Showing exceptional quality on courses from 1200m to 1600m, Lusail has an excellent temperament, equal to his talent.”

Haras de Bouquetot manager Benoit Jeffroy commented, “We are delighted to welcome a multiple Group-winning two-year-old, precocious and fast, of the quality of Lusail, and to give French breeders the opportunity to access a son of our rising star Mehmas, who also won the July Stakes at two.”

He added, “Lusail is a tough and consistent horse, who has also performed at the highest level at three, and whose mother is a sister of a champion sprinter who won a Group 1 at Royal Ascot.”

Lusail's stud fee will be announced soon. He will be available for visits at Haras de Bouquetot during the Arqana breeding stock sales.

Facteur Cheval to Queen Elizabeth II on British Champions Day

Group 3 winner Facteur Cheval (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) will likely start next in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on British Champions S. Day at Ascot if the anticipated wet weather holds, Team Valor's Barry Irwin said Sunday. The 4-year-old gelding was most recently third behind Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 Prix Du Moulin de Longchamp on Sept. 3.

“It's the plan and he could run on any type of surface, but he's better with some give in the ground and the wetter the better, like when he won the Prix Perth at Saint-Cloud,” Irwin said. “We have skipped some other races he could have run in waiting for the race next weekend figuring it would be really wet again.”

“I think at this point we're looking at it as much, if not more, as a test to see how he handles that [quicker] going at this point of his life, as our goal next year is the G1 Dubai Turf. This will be a good test to see how he handles that type of track. That mile up the straight at Ascot is more like a mile and eighth and that's the distance of the Dubai Turf.”
