Grand National-Winning Rider Treadwell Dies

Liam Treadwell, who won the 2009 Grand National aboard 100-1 outsider Mon Mome (Fr) (Passing Sail {Fr}), has died aged 34. A statement from West Mercia Police read, “earlier this morning police were called to an address in Billingsley, near Bridgnorth, following the death of a man in his 30s. The death is currently being treated as unexplained. However, at this stage there is believed to be no third-party involvement.”

Treadwell, who was also third in the 2015 Grand National on Monbeg Dude (Ire) (Witness Box), had retired in February 2018 but returned to the saddle last March. He was also an assistant to trainer Alastair Ralph.

British Horseracing Authority Chief Executive Nick Rust said in a statement, “We are devastated to hear the tragic news about Liam Treadwell. Liam had a fine career in British racing, riding over 300 winners in the 17 years that he held a jockeys’ licence, obviously none more memorable than his remarkable 100-1 Grand National success on Mon Mome in 2009–a ride that cemented his place in racing folklore. The racing community will be united in grief today, and the thoughts of everyone at the BHA are with Liam’s friends, family and colleagues.”

Dandalla Camp Mulling Targets

Last week’s eye-catching G3 Albany S. winner Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) will step up to Group 2 company in either the Duchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket on July 10 or the Prix Robert Papin against colts at Chantilly the following week, according to Nick Bradley, who co-owns the filly with Elaine Burke, wife of trainer Karl Burke.

Dandalla was a €22,000 yearling purchase by the Burkes’ daughter Kelly. Bradley said offers have been coming in for the filly since her Royal Ascot victory, but that they likely will continue to be turned down.

“We’ve probably had around 10 enquiries since last week, but I think we’ll still own her [for her next run],” Bradley said. “[Elaine Burke] has a significant share and we’re not that interested in selling, to be honest.”

Of Dandalla’s six-length Albany victory off a two-length maiden score at Newcastle, Bradley said, “It was a great performance and we sort of thought she might do that, to be honest, although maybe not in that style. The word beforehand was really good. You never really know what you’re up against going into a juvenile race at Royal Ascot, but Karl was very hopeful and how right he was–he’s done a great job with her.”

Sceptical Camp Eyes July Cup and Nunthorpe

G1SP Sceptical (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) is likely to return to England in a bid for sprint honours at the top level following his narrow defeat in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot where he was third to Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}) for trainer Denis Hogan. Hogan will look at the G1 Darley July Cup and the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. for his stable star. Sceptical, a winner at listed level in Ireland, is also the highest rated speedster in Ireland, with four wins on the bounce before his Royal Ascot adventure.

“It was bitter sweet, I suppose,” said Hogan. “It could have been a brilliant day, but it was still a great day in fairness. He did himself proud and he’ll be back again. We’ll see about the July Cup and Nunthorpe. He’s in the [G3] Greenlands next Sunday [at the Curragh], but I’d imagine that will come too soon. We’ll give him a chance, because he’s been busy enough.”
