English King Pleases Walker In Work

G1 Investec Derby favourite English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) and new rider Frankie Dettori had an opportunity to get acquainted with one another on the Lambourn gallops on Wednesday, with the Italian partnering the Ed Walker-trained Listed Derby Trial S. winner in a piece of work.

“Today is 10 days out from the Derby, which is always when I would do my last proper piece of work with a horse, and he worked very well,” Walker said. “Frankie came in and had a sit on him, and everything went smoothly. He came out of it good and seems in good shape.

“I wasn’t really nervous about this piece of work, because he’s not a horse that you need or expect to see blasting clear of his lead horse in Frankel-Bullet Train style. I was lucky enough to see that horse work a number of times and I always feared that if that’s what it took to have a Group 1 horse, I probably never would have one. This guy only does what he has to do, and the thing I was most nervous about, with Frankie coming down, was he might not impress Frankie, but he loved the horse. Frankie rode him from his stable and back to his stable–he really wanted to get inside the horse’s head and understand him, which is a mark of Frankie’s professionalism. He rode him for well over an hour, and they got on great.

“His feedback was kind of as I expected–he loves the way he moves, he’s an exceptionally athletic horse and he loved his personality. He’s a playful horse who switches off and conserves energy. He is very straightforward, but has that Montjeu twinkle in his eye. He’ll have another piece of work early next week, all being well. Then it’s just a case of freshening him up and getting him feeling as well as he possibly can for the big day.”

Hayley Turner Out With Injury

After collecting her second Royal Ascot victory last week with the Charlie Fellowes-trained Onassis (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Sandringham H., jockey Hayley Turning is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a dislocated collarbone in a fall at Kempton on Saturday.

Turner was thrown to the track near the finish of a seven furlong handicap when her mount Red Armour (GB) (Nayef) suffered a fatal injury.

Telecaster The Early Bird On Thursday

In an attempt to beat the heatwave, ParisLongchamp stage their card on Thursday morning, with the G3 La Coupe scheduled at 9.40 a.m. Castle Down Racing’s G2 Dante S. hero of 2019, Telecaster (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), made an encouraging return to action when 1 1/4-lengths third to Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G3 Betway Brigadier Gerard S. over this 10-furlong trip at Haydock on June 7 and that form is a notch above his rivals. He needs a confidence boost, but may not get an easy time if Team Valor International’s mare Nisreen (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) is on her A-game. Still progressing at six, she returns to Europe having run second to Magic Lily (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) in both the Jan. 16 G2 Cape Verdi and Feb. 13 G2 Balanchine at Meydan.

Telecaster’s trainer Hughie Morrison looks to have found an ideal opportunity for the 4-year-old and said, “Hopefully the ground won’t be too quick for him. We nearly put him in the Prince of Wales’s, but that would have been a quick enough turn around. It will be interesting to see how he takes the travelling. He seemed fine after Haydock and I didn’t have any negatives about the run. He probably would have enjoyed it more if we had let him roll on. That Haydock race could turn out to be better than the Prince of Wales’s S. He does plenty at home, but hopefully he will come for that run and I’d be disappointed if he doesn’t.”

Later on the card, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) heads a duo from the Charlie Appleby stable in the seven-furlong G3 Prix de La Porte Maillot. Successful on his European return in Haydock’s Listed Spring Trophy on June 7, Godolphin’s G1 Prix Jean Prat runner-up and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest third should prove a cut above his rivals with stablemate D’bai (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) perhaps his biggest threat.

Haydock’s card features a well-contested renewal of the Listed EBF Eternal Fillies’ S. over an extended seven furlongs in which two promising fillies from major yards in Althiqa (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Jovial (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) are pitched in against last year’s G3 Prestige S. winner Boomer (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the G3 Princess Margaret S. scorer Under the Stars (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) and G2 Rockfel S. runner-up Stylistique (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Althiqa, who impressed when scoring by 7 1/2 lengths in a Newmarket novice over this trip on June 14, is joined by the fellow Charlie Appleby-trained Spring of Love (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) who is totally unexposed having won on debut at Newmarket in October. Jovial, a relative of Frankel (GB), represents the Khalid Abdullah-Sir Michael Stoute axis and looked ready for both her black-type bow and a step up in trip when taking a six-furlong handicap on Lingfield’s Polytrack on June 5.

Under the Stars’s trainer James Tate is hoping his stable star can back up after her gallant sixth in the G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on June 7. “She’s in good form and ran a nice race in the Guineas. She was just a bit fresh and a bit free and we think coming back to seven furlongs will suit her–we think it could prove to be her optimum trip,” he commented. “It does look a strong race, but that has rather been the story of the season so far. It does look a bit more like a Group 3 race on paper, rather than a listed race. We haven’t been done any favours by the draw [in stall 14], but she always runs well and I’m sure she will again.”

Flying Start Holds Virtual Awards Ceremony

The 2020 Godolphin Flying Start Alumni Awards-which are peer-voted among the programme’s 177 graduates–were presented on Wednesday in a virtual ceremony, with the recipients accepting their awards over Zoom in four different countries.

Irish National Stud Chief Executive Officer Cathal Beale was presented the award for Leadership Excellence by Joe Osborne, managing director of Godolphin Ireland.

“I’m very humbled, very moved and I was listening to the description wondering who it could be and then when [Godolphin Flying Start Executive Director] Clodagh [Kavanagh] said ‘Irish National Stud’ I realised, ‘oh, it’s me!’ What a huge honour and thank you to all the nice people who said all those nice things. It’s very humbling. Thank you all.”

The Business Excellence Award went to Adrian Bott, who has trained numerous Group 1 winners alongside Gai Waterhouse including this year’s G1 Golden Slipper winner Farnan (Aus). Bott was presented the award by previous winner Henry Field, and he said, “I’m very honoured to be receiving this award from a previous recipient. Henry’s been an absolute inspiration to me in pushing forward with the business. Thank you to everyone who voted for me to win this award–it’s very much appreciated.”

This year’s awards saw the inaugural Rising Star categories, presented to graduates within the last five years who have made an impact in the industry. Hampshire-based business partners Mimi Wadham and Violet Hesketh, who graduated together in 2016, received the Rising Star Impact Award for the early success of their pinhooking and consigning business WH Bloodstock. The duo’s first-ever horse through the ring was a 35,000gns foal pinhooked for £110,000, and they sold a Showcasing (GB) colt for 650,000gns at Tattersalls October last year.

Kentucky-based graduate Madison Scott, who works for Solis/Litt Bloodstock, received the Rising Star Influence Award for her work alongside second year trainer Annise Montplaisir in founding Amplify Horse Racing with an aim to educate on and promote Thoroughbred industry career and educational opportunities and avenues for industry involvement.

Clodagh Kavanagh said, “These are peer voted, we had almost 100 votes from graduates this year. These are the players’ player awards, talented people voting for those that have been outstanding in their fields. They are coveted, rare and always deserving.”
