What’s In a Name: Et Tu Brute (Ire)

Julius Caesar was almost a Roman Emperor. He was prevented from being one by the assassins led by his adopted (and natural, some say) son Brutus, while on his way to the Senate on March 15, 44 B.C. According to Shakespeare-validated legend, Caesar uttered “Et Tu Brute?” (‘You too. Brutus?’) when he saw Brutus among his assailants, and stopped defending himself. So the name of this Chepstow 2-year-old winner by Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) tells an ancient story, one of tragically hyper-partisan politics.

The 2020 Godolphin Flying Start Class graduated via Zoom Webinar on July 1, Godolphin announced on Wednesday. The two-year programme is accredited by the University College Dublin Michael Smurfit Business School as a Graduate Certificate in Management. The 12 trainees were virtually presented with their graduation certificates by Godolphin USA Chief Operating Officer Dan Pride. Led by Anna Power (Australia) who compiled the highest grade, the 11 other trainees are: Nico Archdale (UK), Lucy Blake (Ireland), Corbin Blumberg (USA), John Bourke (Ireland), Samantha Cripps (USA), Luke Evans (UK), Liza Hendriks (USA), Amelie Lemercier (France), Annise Montplaisir (USA), Niall O’Connor (UK), and Isabella Paul (UK).

“There are few life experiences as all encompassing, as varied and as sustained as the two years of Godolphin Flying Start,” said Godolphin Flying Star Executive Director Clodagh Kavanagh speaking from Kildangan Stud in Ireland on the Thoroughbred Industry Leadership and Management Programme. “As very many graduates have said, it is truly life changing. The development, maturity, and the experiences gained during the programme mean that this group come to graduation today as self-aware, resilient and skilled individuals. Ready to apply their many learnings and ideas to the Thoroughbred industry of which they are now part of the fabric.”

Added Tattersalls Chairman and Godolphin Flying Start Trustee Edmond Mahony, “From early beginnings the course has developed and grown and prospered, not only thanks to its excellent management but also thanks to the exploits of its graduates who are now contributing to our industry as leaders themselves. The course has become a byword for quality and its success has been achieved by the diversity of nationality, age, gender and the personality of its graduates and all involved in Godolphin Flying Start can look back in satisfaction, if not a little pride, at what has been achieved.”

Qaader Targeting July Festival

Sheikh Hamdan’s ‘TDN Rising Star’ Qaader (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), last seen finishing second in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot, could reappear in the G2 Superlative S. over seven furlongs on July 11 at Newmarket or the G2 July S. over a furlong shorter over the same course 48 hours earlier.

Assistant trainer Charlie Johnston said, “The July Festival is where you are likely to see Qaader next, although we are flexible as to which race we will run him in. We could go up to seven for the Superlative or stay at six for the July S.

“He was still quite green in the race at Ascot, and didn’t get beat through a lack of speed but through a lack of experience. We would have no problem taking on the Coventry winner [Nando Parrado] again at some point, because Qaader moved through the race like a very good horse.”

The stable’s Eye Of Heaven (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) was more of a disappointment at Royal Ascot, beating just three home as the favourite in the G2 Norfolk S., but Johnston is not discouraged by the colt’s future prospects as he prepares for the G3 Molecomb S. on July 29.

“Eye Of Heaven will go straight to the Molecomb,” he said. “The only other race for him over five furlongs would have been the Dragon S. at Sandown on Sunday, but that comes a bit too soon for him off the back of Ascot.

“I would just put a line through his run [in the Norfolk]. His run at Newmarket [on debut] is bomb proof, as is his home work. The ground at Ascot was one factor, along with a few other little things. I hope we will see the real Eye Of Heaven at Goodwood.”
