Aidan and Donnacha O’Brien Temporarily Banned From Irish Courses

Trainers Aidan and Donnacha O’Brien have been fined €2,500 each and prohibited from attending race meetings in Ireland for two weeks for failing to enter The Curragh through the health screening area at a meeting last month. The pair were found to have breached coronavirus health screening protocols at the County Kildare course on June 12, which was G1 Irish 2000 Guineas day during the week racing resumed in Ireland. The matter was heard by the referrals panel of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board on Monday.

A tweet from the IHRB read, “At a referral hearing of Aidan O’Brien [Trainer] & Donnacha O’Brien [Trainer] following a referral from The Curragh on 12/06/20 both trainers were fined €2,500 & prohibited from attending a racecourse for 2 weeks for failing to enter The Curragh through the health screening area.”

IHRB press officer Niall Cronin said, “We noted the decision of the referrals committee and the various protocols regarding Covid-19 are very serious. It is important that they are strictly adhered to at all times to make sure that racing can continue in a safe manner for everyone involved.”

What’s In a Name: Valeria Messalina

Group 3 winner Valeria Messalina (Ire), a 3-year-old filly by Holy Roman Emperor (Ire), carries a name heavy with reputation–good and bad but never indifferent. There were many Roman Emperors in the life of the historical Valeria Messalina, who lived in the first century, during the first decades of the Empire: her husband Claudius (she was his third wife), her cousin Caligula, her cousin Nero, and her great-granduncle Augustus. The emperors of the Julio-Claudian dynasty did not appear to be exemplary models of conservative family values, and Valeria Messalina was probably affected by that perception: she became a target for accusations of promiscuity and unfaithfulness–maybe politically motivated claims at the time, but later picked up by serious historians. She was eventually executed by a Praetorian guard on the order of her husband’s men on account of conspiracy against the Emperor. Her legend lived ever after in figurative arts, literature and the popular imagination–a phenomenon that is somehow similar to that of the public fascination with the great outlaws (Robin Hood, Billy The Kid, etc).

What’s in a Name: Pinatubo

Godolphin’s Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) exploded with speed in the last furlong of Sunday’s G1 Prix Jean Prat in Deauville, as is appropriate for a horse named after a volcano. Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines “is most notorious for its VEI-Level 6 (max is 8) eruption on June 15, 1991, the second largest one of the 20th century,” according to Wikipedia. The dam of Pinatubo is Lava Flow (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), and the granddam is Mount Elbrus (GB) (Barathea {Ire}), which is the name of a dormant volcano in Southern Russia. Remarkable theme consistency in the pedigree (vein-naming) made for this ingenious and appealing name.

ParisLongchamp Hosts Fete Nationale Card

France’s Fête Nationale is without its racing centrepiece on Tuesday, with the G1 Grand Prix de Paris moved to September, but there are still three pattern races and a listed race for 2-year-olds for the recalled crowds at ParisLongchamp. Perhaps the most intriguing contest on the fixture is the G2 Prix de Malleret for 3-year-old fillies over 12 furlongs, where Khalid Abdullah’s Bonne Idee (GB) (Frankel  {GB}) bids to extend her winning streak. Looking in need of this trip when beating her subsequent Listed Prix Melisande-winning stablemate Alkandora (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in a 10 1/2-furlong conditions event at Chantilly a month ago, she will be tested by Gerard Augustin-Normand’s Vaucelles (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) who was fourth in the G1 Prix Saint Alary on that same card.

Opening the card is the G3 Prix du Lys, where a potential contender for the aforementioned Grand Prix de Paris surfaces in the unbeaten Magnier/Tabor/Smith representative Measure of Time (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}). Trainer Andre Fabre has won this on 15 occasions and the bay is his sole runner this time, having won with authority over this 12-furlong trip at Clairefontaine June 4. He faces Godolphin’s gelding Volkan Star (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who beat the subsequent G2 Dante S. winner Thunderous (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) in the Listed Fairway S. over 10 furlongs at Newmarket June 27. “Volkan Star has some very solid form around him now and came out of the Fairway S. well,” Charlie Appleby said. “He has galloped all the way to the line on both his starts this season and the step up to a mile and a half shouldn’t be a problem. A repeat of his last run should make him hard to beat.”

The juveniles get their chance in the seven-furlong Listed Prix Roland de Chambure, with a trio of unbeaten colts headed by the Haras de la Gousserie’s June 19 Chantilly conditions scorer Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) from the Frederic Rossi stable, while the 14-furlong G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil sees the June 14 G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier winner San Huberto (Ire) (Speightstown) bid to defy a three-pound penalty.  Fourth that day, Called To the Bar (Ire) (Henrythenavigator) re-opposes alongside the veteran Holdthasigreen (Fr) (Hold That Tiger) who was uncharacteristically tame effort when 10th in that contest.
