Ghaiyyath Still in Irish Champion Lineup

MG1SW Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is one of 13 horses standing their ground at this entry stage for the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown on Saturday, Horse Racing Ireland announced on Tuesday. A final call on the Godolphin representative’s participation will be made on Wednesday. The bay has already racked up a trio of Group 1s this season-the Coronation Cup S. at Newmarket, Sandown’s Coral-Eclipse S. and last month’s Juddmonte International S. at York.

“Ghaiyyath will work tomorrow morning, we will have a final discussion then and if everyone is happy our intention is to fly to Dublin on Saturday morning,” said trainer Charlie Appleby.

He faces some stiff opposition, including Juddmonte International second and third MG1SW Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 Prince Of Wales’s S. hero Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), from the yards of Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden, respectively. French Classic hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who took the June 14 G1 Prix Gayan is also entered for Jean-Claude Rouget, while Godolphin’s MG1SW Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) could also compete.

O’Brien also has G1 Investec Derby victor Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), MG1SW Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), G1SW Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G1SP Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and MGSW & MG1SP Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) entered at this point. Jessica Harrington has entered GSW Leo De Fury (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Joseph O’Brien has the pair of MGSW Buckhurst (Ire) (Australia {GB} and Group 3 winner Degraves (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

HRI Industry Education and Training Survey Results Announced

The education and training survey results, which 699 people participated in from Nov. 4-Dec. 16, 2019, were announced by Horse Racing Ireland on Tuesday. The main challenges of all survey participants-147 employers, 482 employees and 47 students-were financial and getting time off for additional training. Other issues for employees are work hours and low income, while for employers, set-up costs and staff shortages were problems. The 2020 industry education and training strategy developed by HRI to combat these changes are as follows:

  • Attract people to join the racing and breeding industry
  • Develop people to deliver and grow their skills and career in the racing and breeding industry
  • Support employers to retain staff to deliver and grow within the racing and breeding industry

These priorities will provide HRI with actions to develop a range of subsidized education and training services to the entire industry to upskill, re-train and recruit/retain staff.

“This was the first time a training education survey was conducted across the horse racing and breeding industry and provided us an opportunity to hear directly from people working in the industry,” said HRI Industry Education and Training Manager Grainne Murphy. “The data provided has helped to shape and inform our training and education strategy 2020-2022.

“Improving training and education opportunities must be a shared endeavour and we hope data from this survey along with future surveys can help drive change. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time and effort to complete the survey, especially my colleagues in the Irish Stablestaff Association, the Irish Racehorse Trainers’ Association, the Restricted Trainers’ Association, the Jockeys’ Association, RACE, the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board in helping us deliver this survey.”

Newsells Park Unveils New Website, Features Yearling Consignments

Newsells Park Stud, which will be consigning yearlings to the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, has launched a new website at www.newsells-park.com. A total of 25 yearlings from Newsells Park are slated to sell during the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, with visitors to the new website able to access pedigree links, photos and videos of the individual yearlings.

One of the highlights of the draft is lot 436, a daughter of Galileo (Ire) out of Shastye (Ire) (Danehill), making her a full-sister to European highweight Japan (GB), who has saluted in the G1 Juddmonte International S. and the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. The filly is also a full-sister to GSW Secret Gesture (GB), who ran second in the G1 Oaks and G1 German Oaks and was third in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks; MGSW & G1SP Mogul (GB), GSW Sir Isaac Newton (GB), and a half-sister to MSW Maurus (GB) (Medicean {GB}).

“Clearly the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to leave its mark and we were therefore keen to ensure potential buyers could access as much information online,” said Newsells Park Stud General Manager Julian Dollar. “We believe we have one of the best drafts of yearlings that we have ever had and we hope that these high-class individuals, together with our proven track record of breeding and raising 11 Group 1 winners, including two Classic winners and an Arc winner, since 2010, will give buyers confidence during these uncertain times. ”

Newsells Park stands the stallions Nathaniel (Ire), sire of dual G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Enable (GB), and Group 1 sire Equiano (Fr), and viewers can learn more about the pair on the new website, as well.
