CIR Launches ‘Step On Track’ Program

Careers in Racing (CiR), the careers marketing arm of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), announced the launch of a new program designed to introduce young people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds to the horseracing industry. Step On Track, which has been developed in response to the lack of BAME representation within several areas of British racing, aims to engage young people from ethnic minorities with the sport, as well as highlighting career opportunities. The program will take place during Black History Month in the October half term (Oct. 26-30) and will include talks from inspirational racing figures, activities and the opportunity to go racing as a group at an appropriate point in the future. Upon completion of the course, the candidates will receive ongoing mentoring and guidance, as well as assistance in finding work experience placements within the industry.

The scheme will initially be open for between 6-12 people by way of a pilot, with the aim of increasing participation in future schemes. Candidates for the pilot event are being sourced in part through racing’s links with community groups such as Ebony Horse Club, Urban Equestrian, Gloucester City Riding Club and Park Palace Ponies.

Zoe Elliott, Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment at the BHA said: “The proportion of BAME representation is an area which many sports are considering at present whether that be at participant, executive or leadership level. Racing is committed to striving to be a diverse and fully inclusive industry, but many are aware that young people from ethnic minorities may not have easily available access to learn about the sport of horseracing. We hope that Step On Track will be a positive initial step to showcase racing both as a sport and as an industry to young people who may not have encountered it before, with the longer term aim of growing the scheme to become a permanent part of our wider program of existing careers marketing activity.”

Racing Welfare Join Forces with Sleepstation

Racing Welfare announced the partnership with sleep therapy service, the NHS accredited Sleepstation. The online program, which is designed to help with longer and better quality sleep, is free of charge to anyone in the racing industry.

The online program, which may last up to eight weeks, is a person centered approach where patients would previously only be able to access in leading sleep clinics, known as CBTi (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia).

The Sleepstation online program provides benefits, including no waiting lists, no need to take time off work, no travel costs involved and no set appointment times.

Philip Freedman New RoR Chairman

Owner/breeder Philip Freedman has been named the new Chairman of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) charity, the British Horseracing Authority and RoR announced on Tuesday. Freedman, part of the sport’s tripartite Member’s Committee as the Chair of the Horsemen’s Group, succeeds Paul Roy. His term will begin on Jan. 1, 2021.

“I am delighted to be taking over as Chair of Retraining of Racehorses,” said Freedman. “As someone who has spent much of their life working with horses and within the racing and breeding industries, I recognise the importance of ensuring that the horses we breed and train for racing are also provided with a fulfilling second career.

“Under Paul’s stewardship RoR has made considerable progress and become a highly respected organisation throughout the wider equestrian world and with fellow equine welfare charities. I am looking forward to building on that progress and working with the Horse Welfare Board to help them deliver the industry’s welfare strategy.”

“It has been a great honour to chair RoR for the past seven years, and I’m proud of the progress that has been made to improve the welfare and aftercare of thoroughbreds,” said Roy.

“I wish Philip, the trustees and the team the best of luck as they look to ensure that through the work of RoR British racing remains a world leader in the aftercare of retired racehorses.”

Tattersalls Autumn HIT Catalogue Features The Lir Jet

G2 Norfolk S. winner and G1 Phoenix S. bridesmaid The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}) anchors the 1,617-lot Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale catalogue, which was released on Tuesday. One of more than 90 group and listed performers to be offered from Oct. 26-29, the bay is listed as lot 1071 from the consignment of Jamie Railton.

MGSP Devious Company (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) (lot 630) from Tom Dascombe’s Manor House Stables is another lot of note, as he is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Circumvent (GB) (Tobougg {Ire}). Alignak (GB) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) (lot 693), a listed winner and sporting an RPR rating of 110, will be sent through the ring as one of 22 from Sir Michael Stoute’s Freemason Lodge Stables. A son of the German Champion Older Mare Albanova (GB) (Alzao), he is a half-brother to GSW Algometer (GB) (Archipenko); SW Alwilda (GB) (Hernando {Fr}), the dam of SW & G1SP Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}); and MSW All at Sea (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

The ever popular Juddmonte draft of 26 features the listed-placed Emissary (GB) (Kingman {GB}) (lot 1126), a half-brother to European highweight and MG1SW Workforce (GB) (King’s Best). Ballydoyle has a quartet of GSWs amongst its consignment of 47 in the forms of: G1 Phoenix S. third and G2 July S. victor Royal Lytham (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) (lot 289); G2 Ballysax S. scorer Nobel Prize (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 714); lot 713, two-time group winner Royal Dornoch (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}); and G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial S. hero Cormorant (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) (lot 717).

The largest consignment in the sale is Shadwell with 97, among them 18 horses rated over 95 by Timeform. The Castlebridge Consignment fields 81 and 69 will go through the ring from trainer Richard Hannon’s East Everleigh operation. Other large consignments belong to Mark Johnston’s Kingsley Park (64), Richard Fahey’s Musley Bank (46), Roger Varian’s Carlburg Stables (35), and Andrew Balding’s Park House Stables (34).

In 2019, 985 horses sold for a gross of 25,393,400gns. The average was 25,780gns and the median was 12,000gns. Topping the sale was the 625,000gns Summer Sands (GB) (Coach House {Ire}) to Joseph O’Brien.
