Lena Goedde Wins Best Turned Out Horse Challenge at Arc Sale

Arqana has awarded Lena Goedde with first prize of €500 for the best turned out horse at last week’s The Arc Sale. Goedde looked after Virginia Joy (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) on behalf of Gestut Auenquelle. Laura Delage, who earned €350 as the runner-up, was responsible for Dick Whittington (Fr) (War Command) for Yann Barberot’s Stable, while Lea Winzenrieth came in third, collecting €150 for Hercule Point (Ire) (Network {Fr}).
All horses were inspected at the sale and a jury rated the quality of their presentation according to the following criteria:
• Availability: each horse must be visible at any time of the day.
• The quality of the presentation: the horse must stand and walk in a straight line with an energetic step.
• The care of the presentation: this criterion concerns both the horse and the person presenting it.

Smullen to be Honored with Dundalk Stakes Race

Nine-time Irish Champion Jockey, Pat Smullen, who lost his battle with cancer last month, will be honored at Dundalk Stadium with the inaugural running of the five-furlong G3 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Pat Smullen Mercury S. Oct. 16. The €50,000 event is sponsored by Al Basti Equiworld, a UAE distributor of horse feeds and supplements. Smullen held a long association with the brand as well as a long-standing friendship with the brand’s founder, Malih Al Basti.

“Pat was a terrific horseman and a great friend, said Al Basti. “I hope this race will provide all those who knew him or admired his achievements from afar with an opportunity to reflect on a true racing legend.”

Chief Executive Jim Martin said, “We are delighted that Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai has chosen to honor Pat with a race at Dundalk Stadium where he rode his first winner, Vicosa, for trainer Tom Lacy in June 1993, and his last aboard Anthony McCann’s Togoville in March, 2018. We have enjoyed some great moments with Pat in between and look forward to celebrating his outstanding career with this prestigious event later this month.”

The half-sister to stablemate and this term’s G2 Prix de Malleret runner-up Oriental Mystique (GB) (Kingman {GB}) faces 10 rivals featuring Shadwell debutante Bawaady (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is a Sir Michael Stoute-conditioned half-sister to MGSW G1 Irish 2000 Guineas third Mustajeeb (GB) (Nayef).

Ed Walker trainee SKY BRIGHT (GB) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), a daughter of GI Beverly D S. and GI Diana H. heroine Angara (GB) (Alzao), is opposed by nine in this unveiling. Opposition includes Khalid Abdullah’s once-raced Brunnera (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is a daughter of G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Romantica (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and represents Hugo Palmer’s local yard.

Longines WBRR Released

Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) a winner of the G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe this past Sunday, has moved into the top 10 of the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings with a mark of 123. He defeated In Swoop (Ire) () (122) back in second. Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) rated 121 after his G1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris performance. G1SW Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) moved up to 122 from 120 after landing the G2 Shadwell Joel S. Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) remains on top of the table at 130.

Stateside, the filly Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) improved to 122, as she narrowly bested the 124-ranked GI Kentucky Derby winner Authentic (Into Mischief) in the GI Preakness S. on Oct. 3.
