Intello’s Noble Heidi Is Germany’s Winter Queen

Manfred Schmelzer’s Noble Heidi (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) added to trainer Henk Grewe’s regular Tours de France tally with a July 1 debut win over seven furlongs at Compiegne, slipping to third in an Aug. 21 heat over the same distance at Clairefontaine, and she regained the winning thread upped to one mile at Chantilly last month, defeating subsequent G3 Prix Thomas Bryon second Homeryan (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in that Sept. 1 test. She was sent postward as the 17-10 selection for Sunday’s G3 Preis der Winterkonigin, Germany’s premier event for juvenile fillies, and duly delivered for a career high in the one-mile Baden-Baden feature. The eventual winner stalked the pace in fourth after an alert getaway in this black-type bow. Improving into third at the top of the straight, she was sent in pursuit of Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under continued rousting in the closing stages to deny that rival by 3/4-of-a-length nearing the line.

“She works well at home and has the feel of a very good horse although I did manage to get beat on her once,” winning rider Andrasch Starke told GaloppOnline. “The race was run at a fast pace and I had to commit on the bend. She quickened very well, but had a look around once she hit the front.” Champion trainer Henk Grewe added, “We selected her with the owner and she impressed us at the sales, although the price was a bit high for the pedigree. I think she will stay 10 furlongs without any problems and we’ll see if she can go beyond that. We might take her back to France to build her up, but she is not a [G2 German] 1000 Guineas filly. The [G1 Preis der] Diana is her ultimate goal.” Peter Schiergen, trainer of the runner-up Novemba, said, “Sybille [Vogt] gave her a ride and the horse ran great. She will now go on her winter break and we shall aim her at next year’s [G2 German] 1000 Guineas.”

Noble Heidi, half  to a yearling filly by Zarak (Fr) and the sixth pattern-race winner for her sire, is the second of three foals and lone scorer produced by a half-sister to Listed Radley S. runner-up Oxsana (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and G3 Kolner Herbst-Stuten-Meile victress Turning Light (Ger) (Fantastic Light), herself the dam of MGSP Listed La Puente S. winner Surrey Star (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Her second dam, G2 German 1000 Guineas placegetter Turning Leaf (Ire) (Last Tycoon {Ire}), is kin to Listed Bremer Sprint-Cup third Tartuffo (Ger) (Big Shuffle) and Listed Krefelder Stutenpreis third Tamarita (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}). The latter’s descendants include G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten-winning sire Tai Chi (Ger) (High Chaparral {Ire}), G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis victress Taraja (Ger) (High Chaparral {Ire}), this year’s G3 Prix Daphnis winner Thorin (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and this term’s Listed Prix Gold River winner Think Of Me (Ger) (So You Think {NZ}).

Winterkonigin The Focus On Sunday

After Ascot’s Qipco British Champions Day, it is time again to look to the future and Sunday’s action features some choice German juvenile fillies in Baden-Baden’s G3 Preis der Winterkonigin. Manfred Anton Schmelzer’s Noble Heidi (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) caused a stir when beating the subsequent G3 Prix Thomas Bryon runner-up Homeryan (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) by five lengths in a mile conditions race at Chantilly on Sept. 12 and understandably occupies favouritism. Gestut Auenquelle’s unbeaten Reine d’Amour (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) has course form, having taken the seven-furlong G3 Zukunftsrennen also on Sept. 12, while Dr Alexandra Margarete Renz’s Marlar (Ger) (Kallisto {Ger}) also boasts a perfect tally and is unexposed. She beat the re-opposing subsequent Sept. 27 Listed Winterkonigin Trial scorer Peaches (Ger) (Lord of England {Ger}) on debut at Hanover on July 25 before following up in a valuable auction race over seven furlongs at Dortmund on Sept. 20. Peaches was giving five pounds to Dr Christoph Berglar’s Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}) when beating her by 3/4 of a length in Cologne’s Winterkonigin Trial and on level weights should confirm the form in a fascinating race for the title of “Winter Queen”.

Plenty Of Positives As Tattersalls October Ends

A fortnight of selling at Park Paddocks for the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale drew to a close on Saturday morning with a small Book 4 offering. The session added 153,000gns to the coffers for 42 sold (65%). While the average dipped 15% to 3,655gns, the median was up 14% to 2,500gns. A pair of fillies by Equiano (Fr) (lots 2007 and 2030) topped trade at 11,000gns and 10,000gns, respectively, when bought by Nick Bradley Racing/George Boughey and Rabbah Bloodstock.

Tattersalls October Books 1 through 4 cumulatively saw 1,816 yearlings go through the ring, with 1,507 sold (83%, up slightly from last year) for 138,268,200gns (-13%). Unsurprisingly in the midst of a global pandemic, the average dipped 13% to 91,751gns while the median was down 16% at 42,000gns.

The true talking point of the sale was the second week of trade, where Books 2 and 3 were extraordinarily strong considering the circumstances. Book 2 saw figures remain steady with plenty of notable results for pinhookers and breeders alike, while figures rose year-on-year for Book 3.

Upon the conclusion of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “If ever there were any doubt as to the unique status of Newmarket as the hub of European racing and breeding it has been dispelled over the past two weeks of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The heritage of Newmarket is a priceless commodity and has without doubt played a huge part in the strength of the market over the past two weeks.

“This town has an infrastructure and workforce dedicated to the Thoroughbred industry and as such is uniquely placed to cope with the obstacles and challenges thrown at us all by the global COVID pandemic. Ever since the lockdown in March, the industry and the town have worked together in full compliance with all the prevailing rules and regulations to ensure that horses could be cared for at the same time as ensuring safe working environments for everyone at all times.

“Those same principles have been applied at all 11 sales which have taken place at Tattersalls since the end of June and yet again we would like to express our gratitude to every individual who has participated at any of these sales. It has not been easy at times and selling rates have regrettably, but inevitably, been slowed by the new bidding arrangements we have had to introduce, but everybody has shown incredible resolve and they have been rewarded with a market which has displayed remarkable resilience and continued to demonstrate a sustained appetite for the cream of European yearlings in all sectors of the market.

“Similar to Books 1 and 2, Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale has seen a healthy mixture of domestic and overseas competition, albeit at a lower level and we continue to admire the determination of buyers in the face of unprecedented difficulties. The live internet bidding platform has again been invaluable and will no doubt be even more extensively used at the forthcoming Autumn Horses in Training Sale, while buyers in attendance have also worked incredibly hard to assist many of those unable to attend. The spirit of industry-wide cooperation has been outstanding and will continue to serve us well as we endeavour to provide as vibrant a market as possible at both the forthcoming Autumn Horses in Training Sale and the December Sales which will bring an extraordinary Tattersalls sales season to a close.”

Arqana Releases Autumn Catalogues

Arqana has published the catalogues for its Autumn Sale, which will be held in two stages next month.

The first catalogue comprises 254 flat-bred yearlings which will go under the hammer on Nov. 14. This catalogue has been organized in partnership with Osarus, which opted to cancel its traditional September Yearling Sale in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and re-route its entries to this sale and Arqana’s October Yearling Sale.

Following a two-day break for inspections, 200 flat and National Hunt horses in training will be offered on Nov. 16. Eye-catching flat offerings include this year’s G3 Deutsches St Leger scorer Quian (Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) (lot 424); and Aga Khan 3-year-olds Irshad (Fr) (Raven’s Pass) (lot 393) and Vardani (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) (lot 394).

The focus will switch entirely to the jumps on Nov. 17 and 18 with a day of stores and a day of National Hunt-bred yearlings.
