‘Poise and Stride’ Published by Joe Osborne

Poise and Stride, a book of 41 short essays based on Joe Osborne’s observations from business, entertainment and sport during his 40-year career, has been published by Osborne, Managing Director of Godolphin Ireland. Originally written as contributions to the Godolphin Flying Start quarterly newsletter ‘Time Flies’, all proceeds from the sale of this book will go to Racing Academy & Centre of Education (RACE) in Kildare Town. The academy, a registered charity, was established by Joe’s father Michael Osborne in 1973 with Stan Cosgrove and Derek O’Sullivan. The forward is written by RACE graduate, former champion jockey turned trainer Johnny Murtagh, with illustrations by Declan Considine. The book is available for €20 (plus postage) by emailing RACE at poiseandstride@racingacademy.ie or by contacting their office at +353 45 522468.

“This project has been a labour of love and a welcome distraction during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Osborne. “The essays cover a diverse range of topics and I hope that the core messages in them will resonate with readers.  My family has a longstanding link with RACE, so this is an opportunity to support the academy and to highlight the great work they are doing.”

Johnny Murtagh to Train for HH The Aga Khan

Five-time Irish Champion Jockey Johnny Murtagh, who has been training since 2013, will join the roster of HH The Aga Khan’s trainers in Ireland, The Aga Khan Studs announced on Tuesday. Trainer of this season’s G1 Matron S. heroine Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}), Murtagh was stable jockey to John Oxx from 1992 until 2003 and rode many winners in the iconic green and red colours, among them English and Irish Derby hero Sinndar (Ire) (Grand Lodge). Murtagh was also retained jockey for His Highness The Aga Khan in 2011 and 2012 and was aboard 16 Group 1 winners in total for the organisation.

“We have watched Johnny’s training career develop over the last few years and undoubtedly 2020 has been a highly successful year for him,” said Pat Downes, manager of the Aga Khan Studs in Ireland. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to have him train for the Aga Khan Studs and we will be sending him some yearlings in the coming weeks. His Highness and Johnny have enjoyed some great days in the past together and hopefully there will be good days to look forward to in the future as well.”

“I am delighted to renew our partnership with H.H. the Aga Khan and his team,” said Murtagh. “A hugely successful owner-breeder operation worldwide, I look forward to receiving his draft of yearlings here at Fox Covert Stables and hopefully many winners to come, to add to our great association together.”

Tattersalls Ireland Moves Sales to December

The remaining 2020 Tattersalls Ireland sales have been postponed to December after the Irish government moved the country to Level 5 COVID-19 restrictions on Monday evening. The November National Hunt Sale will be held on Dec. 12-14. The November Flat Foal & Breeding Stock Sale, including a yearling section, is now set for Dec. 16, and the Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale will be conducted on Dec. 17. The three sales were originally slated for Nov. 9-13.

“In these uncertain times we must plan as best as we can for further sales and ensure we provide the most vibrant marketplace possible for our clients,” said Tattersalls Ireland CEO Matt Mitchell. “We trust that the increased Level 5 restrictions for the next six weeks will meet the government’s objective and allow us to host our remaining sales in December.”
