Arqana Autumn Begins With Yearlings

Arqana’s four-day Autumn Sale begins on Saturday with a single session of flat-bred yearlings, with 220 set to be offered after scratches. Following a dark day on Sunday, the sale will pick up on Monday and continue through Wednesday with horses in training, stores and National Hunt-bred yearlings. The single-session National Hunt Breeding Stock Sale will take place immediately following the Autumn Sale on Nov. 19, comprising the jumping stock that was set for the December Breeding Stock Sale.

With France in the midst of its second national lockdown due to the coronavirus, it is remarkable that the sale is happening at all, but Arqana officials have worked with government in recent weeks to agree on protocols including restricting the sale to those attending in a professional capacity and staging the sale in its outdoor main yard walking ring rather than in the indoor pavilion.

Highlights of the yearling catalogue on paper include lot 4, a Dabirsim (Fr) half-sister to Group 3-winning juvenile Evasive’s First (Fr) (Evasive {Fr}); lot 25, a Myboycharlie (Ire) filly from the great family of Miesque and Karakontie (Jpn); lot 33, a colt from the first crop of Recorder (GB) who is a half-brother to stakes winner Mister Hughie (Elusive City); lot 42, a Dream Ahead filly out of stakes winner Chasing Stars (GB) (Observatory) from the family of the excellent producer Modena; a pair of colts out of half-sisters to Classic winner Brametot (GB) (151, by Shalaa {Ire} and lot 156, by Ultra {Ire}); lot 176, an Iffraaj (GB) filly out of multiple stakes winner Persona Grata (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}); and lot 212, an Anodin (Ire) filly out of a half-sister to stakes winners Silver Pond (Fr) (Act One {GB}) and Silver Point (Fr) (Commands {Aus}).

The Aga Khan and Wertheimer et Frere are among the breeders that bring quality drafts to Deauville, and representatives of those include the 97-rated 3-year-old Irshad (Fr) (Raven’s Pass) (lot 393); 3-year-old Vardani (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}), the winner of two of his three starts (lot 394); 4-year-old Flambeur (Mizzen Mast), a stakes winner last year who took his most recent start (lot 427); and 3-year-old Healer (Fr) (Medicean {GB}), a winner on debut and runner-up in a Clairefontaine Class 2 race (lot 428).

Many leading trainers also field drafts, like Andre Fabre with the 102-rated ParisLongchamp stakes winner Arapaho (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) (lot 418) and the listed-winning the Group 3-placed Measure Of Time (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), rated 103 (lot 419).

There are many quality National Hunt offerings and wildcards also on offer. The full catalogue is available here.

Asian Notebook: Almond Eye Confirmed For Japan Cup

Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) is likely to have the final start of her illustrious career in the G1 Japan Cup (2400m) at Tokyo Racecourse, her trainer Sakae Kunieda announced through the Twitter account of the Silk Horse Club syndicate that campaigns her.

The 5-year-old daughter of Fusaichi Pandora (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) swept the Japanese Filly Triple Crown in 2018 and capped a Horse of the Year campaign with a smooth 1 3/4-length defeat of front-running Kiseki (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) in the Japan Cup. She added the G1 Dubai Turf and G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) last season and most recently became the first horse in the history of the Japanese turf to win eight Group 1 races when successfully defending her Tenno Sho title Nov. 1.

Also confirmed for the Japan Cup are the twin Triple Crown winners of 2020, the colt Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Daring Tact (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}), neither of whom has tasted defeat in their careers.

Almond Eye’s connections opted for the Japan Cup over a trip to Hong Kong for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup Dec. 13, a race for which she was entered last term, but did not ultimately make the journey. Sha Tin is the destination for another Asian-based runner, as connections confirmed that three-time defending champion Hong Kong jockey Zac Purton has accepted the call aboard Inferno (Aus) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint. Trained by Cliff Brown for owner Glenn Whittenbury’s Barree Stable, the 4-year-old is eight-for-nine lifetime and exits a flashy success in the Oct. 25 Lion City Cup at Kranji Racecourse in Singapore.

Silvano Colt Leads National 2YO Sale Opener

A colt by recently pensioned South African champion sire Silvano (Ger) took top billing during the first of two sessions of the Bloodstock South Africa National 2-Year-Old Sale on Thursday. Offered by Wilgerbosdrift Stud as lot 100, the fourth foal out of the dual Group 1 winner Europa Point (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) was bought by Form Bloodstock for R1.1 million ($70,494/£53,710/€59,723) and was the only seven-figure transaction of the day. The colt’s third dam, Sheroog (Shareef Dancer), is a full-sister to Colorado Dancer (Ire), the dam of Dubai Millennium, and thus it is also the family of leading South African sire Fort Wood.

Silvano also supplied the session’s top-priced filly, lot 54, who was bought by John Freeman for R360,000 ($23,070/£17,581/€19,545). The Ridgemont Highlands-consigned filly is the fourth foal out of the Group 1-placed Careful Hiker (SAf) (Spectrum {Ire}), herself a daughter of the South African champion broodmare Our Table Mountain (Fusaichi Pegasus), a half-sister to American turf champion Artie Schiller.

On the first day of trade, 162 of the 184 2-year-olds offered were sold for an aggregate of R18,680,000 ($1,196,113/£911,770/€1,014,215). The average and median both ticked up 11.7% at R115,309 ($7,383/£5,628/€6,255) and R67,500 ($4,322/£3,294/€3,661), respectively.
