Group Winner Lone Eagle Returns at Sandown

Group 3 winner Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will aim to enhance his G1 Cazoo Derby chances with a start in the G3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown Park on Apr. 23. Second at first asking at Sandown in August, he got off the mark later that month at Goodwood over a mile. He quickly added a Sept. 12 Doncaster handicap and the G3 Zetland S. over 10 furlongs at Newmarket in his juvenile swansong on Oct. 10.

Trainer Martyn Meade said, “The plan is to go to Sandown on Friday with Lone Eagle. He improved all the time last year and he did everything we asked of him. He is totally laidback at home. He is a horse that never shows anything at home but just gives his all on the racecourse.

“He coped with Sandown well first time out there when he was a bit unlucky, so hopefully he can go one better there this time.

“After the race on Friday it will tell us where we are and whether we need to work him on our Derby gallop at home but so far he is going the right way.

“I think he is pretty versatile ground-wise and I don't think he is ground dependent as far as I can ascertain, both from what we have seen at home or on the race track.”

Meade remained noncommittal on sending Statement (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) to the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas after her second-place run in the G3 Dubai Duty Free S. on Sunday.

“Statement showed she is good enough for that level on Sunday and Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) just got the first run on us a bit,” Meade said.

“I'm not sure about the 1000 Guineas yet as she had a hard race at Newbury. The 1000 Guineas is in just under a fortnight and I'm just going to see how she is over the next two or three days.

“She is in the race and if she is firing on all cylinders then we would go, but it might just come too quick and we might then go to the French Guineas instead as she does take a bit of minding.

“I do think she is top class but I don't want to back her up quick and end up leaving her season behind.”

Coronation Cup Possible For Al Aasy

Sunday's G3 John Porter S. victor Al Aasy (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is a likely starter in the June 4 G1 Cazoo Coronation Cup at Epsom according to trainer William Haggas. Also under consideration is the G3 Huxley S. at Chester on May 7 for the Shadwell colourbearer.

“I don't think it was that good a race, but I thought he won well–he won like I hoped he would,” said Haggas.

“He's always been a very slick, smooth worker and a horse with a lot of talent, but he ran appallingly at Newmarket first time out at three.

“He won his maiden easily and then won the Bahrain Trophy and then he flopped a bit in the Gordon, but this is his year, I think.

“The Coronation Cup would be my first preference. I had a conversation with Angus [Gold, Shadwell racing manager] and I'm toying with the Huxley as well because he needs racing, he was very playful beforehand yesterday.

“So, if he goes anywhere before Epsom it will be Chester. He certainly stays, as he showed in the Bahrain Trophy, but he's got plenty of pace. The Huxley is an extended mile and two furlongs but you have to stay at Chester, no matter what some people say. I think a bit of cut in the ground will suit–if it rains by then.”

Coolmore Blueblood Introduced at Tipperary

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Tuesday's Observations features the first foal of MGSP Butterflies (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

4.40 Tipperary, Mdn, €5,500, 2yo, f, 5fT
YET (War Front) is the first foal out of what could prove to be an important broodmare for Coolmore in the dual Group 3-placed Butterflies (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a daughter of Mariah's Storm (Rahy). Therefore a half-sister to Giant's Causeway and his full-sibling You'resothrilling, Butterflies is therefore connected to Galileo's Gleneagles (Ire), Marvellous (Ire) and Happily (Ire).

Ubettabelieveit Again in Sigy

Chantilly hosts the G3 Prix Sigy for the 3-year-old sprinters on Tuesday, with the G2 Flying Childers S. winner Ubettabelieveit (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) set to be a warm order to carry his momentum into his 2021 campaign. Coming to the fore with a short-head  defeat of Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) in that five-furlong Doncaster contest in September, the Nigel Tinkler trainee was able to get to within 1 3/4 lengths of Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) when third after a slow start in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in November. Taking him on is the filly Suesa (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), a George Strawbridge acquisition following her success in the 5 1/2-furlong Listed Prix Yacowlef here in November.

At Epsom, the Listed Blue Riband Trial sees some credible Derby and Oaks aspirants line up in a race that was previously demoted to minor status but is firmly on the way back. John Gosden has won four of the last five runnings, with Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}) chief among them, and puts forward the unbeaten Chasemore Farm homebred Uncle Bryn (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Successful by a cumulative margin of 7 1/4 lengths at Kempton and Wolverhampton in the autumn, he is being brought along gently according to Gosden Sr. “We looked at the Classic Trial at Sandown on Friday, but that looks a very good race this year,” he explained. “We've chosen to go listed in a race we've won before and bearing in mind that his only runs have been on the all-weather, it will be something of a learning curve for him.”

Charlie Appleby's stable has started the season brightly and Godolphin's Wirko (Ger) (Kingman {GB}) is another coming on to turf for the first time having broken his maiden at Kempton in November. “His homework has been nice and he has done well from two to three,” his trainer said. “As respects to the track, he travels well which helps there at Epsom with the undulations. He is another that comes into the mix that we are still trying to feel our way with and where we will be pitching him the first half of the year.”

The Gredleys' Too Friendly (GB) (Camelot {GB}) impressed when winning a 10-furlong maiden at Doncaster Mar. 27 and trainer George Scott said, “He is not a horse that shows a huge amount at home, but he is in great health and we feel the track shouldn't inconvenience him. He is a straightforward horse and we are looking forward to seeing where he sits. I'm pretty sure he will continue to improve physically. He was also in at Sandown, but the track doesn't come into play as much there as it does here and he is a pretty agile horse that should handle the contours.”

Martyn Meade saddles the sole filly in Mantonbury Stud's Jan. 26 Wolverhampton debut winner Technique (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and with the stable almost winning the G3 Fred Darling S. on Sunday she warrants respect. “It is a big ask, as it is a big jump in class,” Meade said. “We debated a bit about going for a novice race, but we thought if she is good enough let's throw her in the deep end. She is very well-balanced and coped with Wolverhampton well, so hopefully she should be fine on the track. If she runs well then we can have a look at running her in the Oaks and if she doesn't we have the option of dropping back and looking at a novice with her. She was head and shoulders above the rest of them at Wolverhampton and she won as she wanted.”
