The Revenant to Seek Soft Ground

Group 1 winner The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who ran fourth in the G2 Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud on May 1, will appear in either the May 30 G1 Prix d'Ispahan at ParisLongchamp or the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot on June 15. A winner of both the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein on Oct. 3 and the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on Oct. 17, the gelding ran third in the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc in his seasonal opener on Apr. 3.

“He's come out of the race well,” said the Chantilly-based Francis-Henri Graffard. “He had his Group 1 penalty and the ground was too fast, but he was in good form and he ran a very good race.

“He's entered in the Queen Anne and he will be entered in the d'Ispahan, but I think he will be good to have his soft ground wherever he goes.”

Coronation Cup For Pyledriver

Dual Group 2 winner Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) is being aimed at Epsom's June 4 G1 Coronation Cup. Co-trainer William Muir, who trains with Chris Grassick, has indicated his stable star exited his second-place finish in the G2 Jockey Club S. on May 1 in good order. A winner of the G2 King Edward VII S. and G2 Great Voltigeur S. in 2020, Pyledriver was also third in the G1 St Leger at Doncaster in September prior to an unplaced run in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. a month later.

“He's come out of his race really well,” said Muir. “His legs are grand, he's trotted well, he's eaten his food, he's fine. He was probably just shy of match fitness and that left him a bit fresh. I did that on purpose as this race wasn't the first and foremost.

“My main objective is to win Group 1s with him this year. The ground was very quick and, getting tired that last bit, he just rolled around, but he's come out of it well. That will settle him.

“We've finished second in a Group 2 and we're in great shape for going forwards. He goes straight to Epsom now for the Coronation. Win, lose or draw, he was always going to go there. He will be perfect come Epsom. There will be no excuses there and there were no excuses on Saturday. Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}) was better than we were.

“Pyledriver had a little light canter on Monday morning. We're very pleased and it's onwards and upwards.”

Group 1 Targets For Saffron Beach

Classic runner-up Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), second in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas on Sunday, is eyeing several Group 1 races later in the spring for her reappearance including the June 4 G1 Cazoo Oaks. The Jane Chapple-Hyam trainee emerged from her Newmarket effort in good form. Other races under consideration are the June 18 G1 Coronation S. during Royal Ascot, the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh on May 23, and the G1 Pretty Polly S. at on June 27.

“She's fine and licked her bowl clean,” said Chapple-Hyam. “I suppose we felt every emotion–delighted with how she ran, but gutted to come so close to winning a Classic.

“The owners are now making a decision whether they want to run her in the Oaks or not. When they were pulling up as they go up the hill, she was full of it. She certainly stayed every yard of the mile. You could nearly say she was first off the bridle because she wanted further.”

A winner of the G3 Oh So Sharp S. last October, the chestnut was also second in the G3 Nell Gwyn S. at HQ in her 3-year-old bow on Apr. 14.

“She's a filly who is versatile on all goings,” added Chapple-Hyam. “She won the Oh So Sharp on soft, and handled fast ground on Sunday. That opens up going abroad with her, because you're not worried whether it's going to rain or not, which is a big plus.

“She's so uncomplicated, so genuine–and it looks exciting times for her stallion, New Bay. Her pedigree says a mile, to be fair, but New Bay won a French Derby and was third in an Arc.

“We're not in the Prix Diane–with Covid and Brexit, there's enough headaches. So she's in the Oaks, the Coronation and also the Pretty Polly at The Curragh over 10 furlongs–so we've got all distances covered. She's also in the Irish Guineas, so it's up to the owners where they want to go–and I'll get her ready for it.”

Australia’s Broome Extends Tally In the Mooresbridge

Providing Aidan O'Brien with a 12th renewal of The Curragh's G2 Coolmore Sottsass Irish EBF Mooresbridge S. on Monday, Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) continued his own success story with a third black-type win in 2021. Having taken the Listed Devoy S. at Naas Mar. 28 and the Apr. 17 G3 Alleged S. over this track and 10-furlong trip, the 4-9 favourite was forwardly placed in second by Ryan Moore and ridden to take command approaching the last two furlongs. Pressed by Helvic Dream (Ire) (Power {GB}) from there, he kept finding to earn a two-length success, with the returning G1 Melbourne Cup hero Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) 4 1/2 lengths away in third.

While he is not one of Ballydoyle's flashiest stars, Broome is one of those admirable back-up horses that the major stables need and is very strong at this level. “He's a lovely horse and he's come back very well this year,” Ryan Moore said. “There is plenty left in there and he kind of played with them to be honest. He's unbeaten at ten, but I do think he'll get further. He's only had a couple of goes at group 1 company and has been fourth on two occasions, so he's entitled to have another go.”

Broome is out of the speedy Listed National S. scorer and G3 Princess Margaret S. and GIII Appalachian S.-placed Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), whose dam is a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette winner Dust Dancer (GB). She in turn produced the GII Lake Placid H. scorer Spotlight (GB) (Dr Fong), herself responsible for the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) and for the dam of last year's G1 St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}). Dust Dancer is also the second dam of the G1 Phoenix S.-winning Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) who posthumously had his first Classic winner on Sunday and his G2 Futurity S.-winning and G1 Irish Derby-placed half-brother Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). This is also the family of the G3 Fred Darling S. scorer Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), her G2 Premio Lydia Tesio-winning daughter Claxon (GB) (Caerleon) and her daughter Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) who took the GIII Hillsborough S. and was runner-up in G1 Nassau S.
