Ella Dettori To Ride In Magnolia Cup

Ella Dettori and Thea Gosden-Hood, the daughters of Frankie Dettori and champion trainer John Gosden, are among the 12-strong line-up for this year's Magnolia Cup at Glorious Goodwood.

The charity race over five and a half furlongs will be run on July 29 and this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. All funds raised by the female riders will go to the UK charity Smart Works, which assists unemployed women in boosting their confidence for job interviews.

Kate Stephens, the CEO of the charity, said, “Smart Works and Goodwood share a mission to support and empower women across the UK. That is why we're honoured to have been chosen as the 2021 Magnolia Cup charity partner.

“In the last year the number of women facing unemployment has risen sharply and Smart Works has never been more needed. Funding for our service will help women across the UK find the confidence to succeed at a crucial moment, get the job and transform their lives.”

Ella Dettori currently rides out for trainer Charlie Fellowes and has been seen riding work alongside her father on Newmarket's famous gallops.

French Jockeys Arrested Following Rape Claim

France's champion jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot and weighing-room colleague Pierre Bazire were arrested on Monday in Chantilly following an allegation of rape, according to reports in the French media.

The jockeys have been stood down from their riding commitments at Chantilly today (Tuesday), where Boudot, three-time winner of France's Cravache d'Or as leading rider, was set to have five rides and Bazire three.

This is the second time that Boudot, 28, has been connected to an allegation of rape. In 2018, a complaint was made against him by a female amateur rider for an assault which was alleged to have taken place in 2015. The jockey strongly refuted the claims in a statement released through his lawyer in January 2020.

The latest accusation is reported to have stemmed from an incident at a party at Cagnes-sur-Mer in February of this year. According to a report in March in the newspaper Le Parisien, a complaint was filed against Boudot on Feb. 19. The report also stated that Boudot's lawyer said the jockey had been receiving threats for a year.

In a tweet on March 1, Boudot said, “I'm not surprised. I was threatened by the complainant's family. Those who testified for me were harassed. Others lobbied for a new complaint to be brought against me. I have absolutely nothing to reproach myself with.”

Winner of of the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2019, Boudot's most recent big-race success came aboard Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}) for Andre Fabre in the G1 Prix Ganay on May 2. The second forfeit stage for this Sunday's French Guineas is on Wednesday.

British Racing Bodies Commit to Improving Diversity and Inclusion

Organisations across British racing have united to improve diversity and inclusion across the sport under a unified “Industry Commitment”. The Industry Commitment, which is part of British racing's COVID-19 Recovery Plan for British racing', aims to formalise the sport's approach to diversity and inclusion and builds on the extensive existing activity already taking place, including community engagement, education activity and charitable work. This is highlighted through the Racing Together platform which has already showcased over 80 initiatives.

Organisations that have signed on to the Industry Commitment are: the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), Racecourse Association (RCA), Racehorse Owners Association (ROA), Thoroughbred Breeders Association (TBA), National Trainers Federation (NTF), Professional Jockeys Association (PJA), National Association of Racing Staff (NARS) and Great British Racing (GBR). There are five areas that underpin the Industry Commitment and each organisations will former their individual Diversity and Inclusion Action Plans:

  • Leadership and Accountability–industry leaders ensuring and taking accountability for the creation of a more diverse and inclusive sport
  • Good Governance–ensuring a better understanding of the racing landscape to influence policy, practice and procedures
  • Education and Awareness Raising–giving everyone across racing access to learning about diversity and inclusion and why they're important to the sport
  • Celebrating Racing's Diversity–showcasing the diversity that exists across the racing industry in order to create an inclusive sport where difference is embraced, and everyone is valued
  • Engaging New Audiences–promoting racing as a sport for all and encouraging diverse communities to take part

Annamarie Phelps, Chair of British Horseracing Authority, said: “This is an important step forward for the sport. We have so much to celebrate in British racing, including men and women being able to compete on a level playing field. Equally, it is the responsibility of all of us in the sport to ensure we can showcase British racing as a modern sport which is truly diverse, inclusive and open to all. Being proactive about improving diversity is essential to the long-term viability of the sport, but first and foremost it is absolutely the right thing to do.”
