Haras d’Etreham Expands, Adds Pre-training and Spelling Farm Haras du Bois

Haras du Bois, a breaking-in, pre-training, and spelling facility, has been acquired by Haras d'Etreham, the stud announced on Thursday. Located 30 minutes from Deauville in the direction of Caen, Haras du Bois has three barns with almost 40 stalls, three lunging rings, a horse-walker, a six-furlong all-weather track, a five-furlong straight sand track and 40 hectares of paddocks and fields surrounded by several forest tracks.

Breaking and pre-training specialists Laura Vanska and Nicolas Leroch, will be responsible for Haras du Bois. Vanska, a 2015 Godolphin Flying Start graduate, holds a public trainers licence and gained experience with the Ehnrooth family, John Hammond, and Francis-Henri Graffard. She spent the past three years as an assistant to Nicolas Clement. A past showjumper, Leroch worked as Fabrice Chappet's head lad for two years and worked for Madame Fabre for the past eight years.

Nicolas de Chambure said, “Haras d'Etreham now has many more horses in training than in the past. This is explained by the selective nature of the yearling market but also by strategic choices to support our own stallions or investment in race fillies. This growth, combined with the evolution in training methods, means that we have been searching for some years for a property to accommodate both our horses and our clients' horses during the different phases of their development. We are very satisfied to have been able to purchase Haras du Bois which fulfills our requirements exactly. Once the straight training track is completed, it will be a comprehensive facility. Laura and Nicolas have extensive experience with young horses, both in training and also the breaking-in process, and we are delighted to welcome them to the Haras d'Etreham within this new project.”

Youth Collaboration Group to Promote Careers in Racing

The Youth Collaboration Group, for young people with an interest in horseracing and marketing, was launched by the British Horseracing Authority on Thursday. Headed by Careers In Racing, the careers marketing arm of the BHA, the Youth Collaboration Group will give young people the chance to contribute their views and ideas about marketing initiatives and content used to promote careers within the industry. The group is open to anyone between 14 and 21 years of age with a keen interest in marketing, graphic design, social media, video content, events and communications. Zoe Elliott, Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment at the BHA, said, “It's important for us at Careers In Racing to make sure that whatever we produce–be that a careers video or careers event–is relevant to the audience it is aimed at.

“We want to build a team of young people who really understand what we are trying to achieve, and who can give us some honest feedback, and co-create some of our initiatives. At the same time, we want to support them in developing work-ready skills to enhance their CVs.

“This is a really exciting opportunity, and we can't wait to get started. Youth Collaboration Group is our working title for this initiative so the very first activity they be asked to give feedback on is the creation of a name and logo for their group. We hope that lots of young people get in touch to be involved.”

Frankel Filly A New Rising Star At Leopardstown

Thursday's Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden at Leopardstown saw the latest TDN Rising Star for Frankel (GB) in Moyglare Stud's Homeless Songs (Ire) as the homebred made an impressive winning debut for the Dermot Weld stable. A half-sister to this year's Listed Orby S. winner Reve de Vol (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), the bay who holds an entry in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. was settled towards the rear early by Oisin Orr. Making eyecatching progress around the outer to get within hailing distance of the leaders passing halfway, the 8-1 shot devoured the ground in the straight to overhaul the solid yardstick Agartha (Ire) (Caravaggio) with half a furlong remaining before staying on powerfully to score by two lengths. There was another length back to another filly with experience in a decent maiden in Smile of Love (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), with Ballydoyle's Twinkle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the full-sister to Anthony Van Dyck (Ire), coming home in fifth.

“It was impressive,” Weld said of the 15th TDN Rising Star for her sire. “She's been working very nicely at home and I thought she'd be tough to beat on the day, but inexperience had to be a concern first time. She was green early on and Oisin took his time on her, which was the plan. She could be very talented. The Moyglare would be the plan for her and we'll maybe have one start between now and then. She's a lovely, beautifully-bred filly and she's a stayer with speed. Please God there is plenty to look forward to.”

Bred on the same cross as Adayar (Ire) and the afternoon's Newmarket maiden winner Frankella (GB), as well as the smart Dream Castle (GB) and Mostahdaf (Ire), Homeless Songs is the second foal out of the talented Joailliere (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who also scored at the first time of asking by seven lengths as a 3-year-old over this trip at Gowran Park in 2015. Pitched straight into the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, she was a touch over-awed in ninth there before going on to place in the G3 Concorde S., G3 Park Express S. and G3 Gladness S. and win the Listed Frankfurt Sprint Trophy. Her aforementioned first foal Reve de Vol had been third in last year's G2 Champions Juvenile S. before winning the Orby over 10 furlongs and is expected to stay a mile and a half by the Ger Lyons stable.

Joailliere's unraced dam Majestic Silver (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}) also produced the G3 Dance Design S. and G3 Meld S. scorer Carla Bianca (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), who was also twice a winner at listed level and fourth in the 2013 G1 Moyglare Stud S., and the G2 Beresford S. runner-up True Solitaire (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}). She is out of the listed winner Diamond Trim (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}), dam of the star stayer Profound Beauty (Ire) (Danehill) whose winning exploits included seven black-type contests and who was also runner-up in the G1 Irish St Leger. Her daughter of Dubawi, Rose de Pierre (Ire), was a dual listed winner and runner-up in the G3 Athasi S. Diamond Trim is out of Moyglare's gold-mine mare In Anticipation (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), linking her to the luminaries Irresistible Jewel (Ire) (Danehill), Princess Highway (Street Cry {Ire}), Royal Diamond (Ire) (King's Best) and Mad About You (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). Joailliere's yearling colt is by Sea the Stars (Ire), while she also has a 2021 full-brother to the winner.

Sea the Stars Colt Lights Up Newmarket

Despite the exploits of Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), there is still room at the top in the 3-year-old miling division and Thursday's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. played host to one who is within touching distance of that elite performer in Shadwell's unbeaten Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). With the G1 St James's Palace S. fourth Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and the G1 2000 Guineas sixth One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the line-up, this was a proper test for the full-brother to last year's G3 Geoffrey Freer S. winner Hukum (Ire) but the money was talking as he was forced into 10-11 favouritism. Anchored in rear of the classy five-runner field by a confident Jim Crowley throughout the early stages as another St James's Palace also-ran in Naamoos (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) set the pace, the William Haggas-trained homebred was eased by his peers heading to two out and after striking the front heading down into the “dip” powered clear for an emphatic four-length success without being asked a serious question. Maximal, who had been five lengths behind Poetic Flare at Royal Ascot, was second 1 1/4 lengths ahead of One Ruler, who had finished under five lengths behind the Bolger star in the Rowley Mile Classic.

After coming from way back to win on debut at Leicester June 7, Baaeed had showed the benefit of that experience to follow up in a more professional manner by 7 1/2 lengths in a novice over this course and distance 12 days later. Nobody's secret entering this examination, he was setting trainer William Haggas a quandary with his latest command performance. “People had told me after his second run that he was a good horse, so I ran him to see if he is and he looks it now,” he said. “He showed a good turn of foot and is quicker than his brother, who's a good horse but is a mile and a half horse. He is an exciting horse I think. His pedigree suggests that a mile and a quarter is what he wants, but the style of his racing doesn't say that. We will see. I don't think there is any hurry to step him up in trip at the moment. I thought it was a really good listed contest. For him to do that, come from the back and show a smart turn of foot is a good sign.”
“He has had three quite quick races, so I don't know what we do next,” Haggas continued. “The obvious race is the group 3 at Goodwood [the July 30 Thoroughbred S.], but that would be four races in two months and he's a young horse with his career in front of him. I don't want to milk him too early and we need to space his races out, with probably three more max this year. He needs to be looked after if he is to have a good 4-year-old career but he'll get entries in every smart race from now on.”

Jockey Jim Crowley added, “He has given me a very good feel. He has obviously progressed from his last run, but that is the first time I've ridden the horse and I was very impressed with him. He put the race to bed very quickly and he did everything right. This lad has more speed than Hukum, who is a very good horse. I would imagine he will be kept at a mile for now while he is winning races like that, but he will get further. He is well-bred and physically a nice horse, so hopefully he can keep going.”

The Listed Prix de Liancourt-winning dam Aghareed (Kingmambo) is proving a notable broodmare for the operation, with the aforementioned Hukum also successful in the Listed Tapster S. and third in the G2 Hardwicke S. this term and proving to be not far off the best middle-distance horses around. Aghareed, who has the unraced 2-year-old filly Zaghaareed (GB) (Intello {Ger}) and a yearling colt by Nathaniel (Ire) to come, was the only black-type performer out of the talented Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). She also took the Prix de Liancourt, but later achieved worldwide notoriety when capturing the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf and GI Flower Bowl Invitational.
