Great Racing Welfare Cycle Challenge Raises £100K

Notable racing charity Racing Welfare received a financial boost during the past week as cyclists and runners earned in excess of £100,000 through donations for The Great Racing Welfare Cycle Challenge and in part from participants in the Vitality Big Half Marathon.

The GRWCC, a 500-mile journey by bike from Carlisle Racecourse to Newton Abbot Racecourse, was completed by 26 cyclists over five days, while four runners in London completed the Vitality Big Half Marathon. The team of cyclists hailed from all corners of the racing industry, and included trainers, stable staff, a clerk of the course, a racing presenter, former jockeys and even two of Racing Welfare's own staff members. Trainer Henry Daly and his wife Clarissa took part in the half-marathon, and showed their support for Racing Welfare after the charity had assisted traveling head person Helen Brisland following a life-changing accident on the gallops in 2018. Other runners included Annamarie Phelps, Lauren Hilton and Eamonn O'Donovan.

Chief Executive Dawn Goodfellow said, “It has been a phenomenal week for Racing Welfare on the fundraising front. After the impact of Covid over the past 18 months, it's fantastic to get back to live events, and these big challenges will help us deliver big impact for our beneficiaries. Thank you to everyone involved for your amazing efforts fundraising, training, cycling and running on our behalf.”

He is already a full-brother to G2 Golden Slipper hero Desert Miracle (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}) and a half to G1 Summer Cup third Tree Tumbo (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}).

Second highest on the day was lot 291, a filly by What A Winter (SAf) from the Mauritzfontein draft. Out of the placed Dame Eleanor (Aus) (New Approach {Ire}), she was knocked down for R850,000 ($55,964/£40,803/€47,694) to Sandy Arundel acting on behalf of fellow KZN trainer Wendy Whitehead.

“The two days of the 2021 BSA National August 2yo Sale will go down as a vote of confidence in the future of SA racing by a broad spectrum of buyers,” said BSA CEO Michael Holmes. “For many, the bidding proved more competitive than may have been anticipated, with a diverse range of quality 2-year-olds from a wide range of stallions in great demand. The proof of the pudding is in the numbers, and we are appreciative of a great team effort that incorporated the vendors, buyers, underbidders and all the support teams.”
