LCA Work Skills Programme Launched in Ireland

The LCA Work Skills pilot programme, hosted by the Irish National Stud, was launched on Aug. 7.

An initiative of Together for Racing Ireland (TfR Ireland) under the umbrella of Together for Racing International (TfRI), the programme brought together students and teaching staff from Curragh Post Primary, Kildare Town Community School and St. Paul's Secondary School. Students were welcomed by INS CEO Cathal Beale at the Michael Osborne Centre, with Godolphin Managing Director Joe Osborne providing some insight into the Irish bloodstock industry. Jane Mangan was the guest speaker, while there was also a prize raffle and jackets donated by The Irish Field. The students and teaching staff were then given a tour of the INS, which involved the recently launched Irish Racehorse Experience and an opportunity to try RACE's mobile racehorse simulator, as well as a tour of the INS stallion yard and foaling unit among other activities.

Commenting on the launch, Joe Osborne said, “It was great to see the launch event at INS so well attended–by students from the three schools, teaching staff and industry personnel. This is a welcome initiative and huge congratulations to everyone who has been involved in pulling it together so successfully. There has been great progress recently in promoting our industry as a career option and I am confident that many of the Leaving Cert Applied students who avail of the work experience placement will find fulfilling employment in the thoroughbred industry in the future.”

If accepted into the programme, each 6th Year Leaving Certificate Applied student will gain 20 days work experience with participating industry organisations over the 2021/2022 academic year. The objective is to give students an insight into the Irish bloodstock industry, including the wide breath of career opportunities available. Over the next few weeks, students interested in the LCA Work Skills pilot programme will be identified and matched with their placement hosts. UK Fixture List Released For 2022

The 2022 UK fixture list was published by the British Horseracing Authority on behalf of the sport's tripartite governance structure of the BHA, racecourses and horsemen and women, on Monday. Comprised of 1,482 fixtures, the 2022 fixture list was developed by the industry's Fixtures and Funding Group, which contains cross-industry representation and was approved by all members of the group and the sport's tripartite executive committee. The list was presented to the BHA Board for approval on Sept. 9. The total fixtures for 2021 was 1,486.

There were several significant developments incorporated into the 2022 list:

An increase in quality, Sunday racing with racecourses making at least £65,000 in executive prizemoney contributions on: May 8 (Hamilton), May 22 (York), June 5 (Musselburgh), July 3 (Chelmsford City), July 24 (Chelmsford City), Aug. 7 (Haydock Park), Aug. 14 (Chelmsford City), and Aug. 21 (Sandown Park).
A sixth Flat fixture approved for Saturdays with racecourses making at least £100,000 in executive prizemoney contributions (one year only): May 14 (Chelsmford City), May 28 (Cartmel), May 28 (Chelmsford City), June 11 (Chester), June 18 (Perth), July 16 (Cartmel), July 16 (Chester), Aug. 13 (Perth), Sept. 10 (Chelmsford City), Sept. 24 (Chester).
A small number of 'rider restricted fixtures' have also been designated in the fixture list to boost participant well-being: Mar. 19 (Wolverhampton), July 31 (Market Rasen), and Nov. 26 (Wolverhampton).

Richard Wayman, Chief Operating Officer for the BHA, said, “In producing the 2022 Fixture List, our overarching aim has been to enhance the appeal of racing to its followers. As ever, this has involved balancing a number of considerations such as seeking to deliver a competitive and compelling sport, whilst also supporting the revenues that encourage the acquisition and retention of owners and their horses. Also, staging fixtures at times when the public can enjoy them whilst also being mindful of the wellbeing impact on the participants who service them.

“Fixture policy is an area of tripartite decision making and, whilst there will inevitably be differences of opinion from time to time, there is complete agreement that the Fixture List must continue to evolve as we listen to what racegoers, fans of the sport and the betting industry's customers, are telling us.

“We have built on some of the initiatives trialled during the pandemic, such as the creation of additional relatively high value meetings on Sundays, and we will continue to look for more opportunities to use the Fixture List to support the future of the sport.”

Mylady A Stakes First For The Grey Gatsby In Germany

Gestut Karlshof's homebred 2-year-old filly Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}) posted an Aug. 22 debut score tackling 7 1/2 furlongs at Mulheim in her only prior start and doubled up with a narrow victory over one mile in Sunday's Listed Junioren-Preis at Dusseldorf to become the first stakes winner for her freshman sire (by Mastercraftsman {Ire}). The spayed grey was rousted from the boxes to claim an early rail position and settled in a handy third after the initial strides. Locked in a pocket when trying to steal up the inside with 300 metres remaining, she was shuffled back to sixth passing the eighth pole and went through an array of gears once angled into the clear in the closing stages to nail stablemate Ariolo (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) by a head on the line for a career high.

Mylady is the only reported foal out of Minoris (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}), herself an unraced daughter of Monspa (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). Monspa, in turn, is kin to Listed Hampton Court S. victor and G2 Hardwicke S. placegetter Persian Majesty (Ire) (Grand Lodge). Mylady's third dam Spa (GB) (Sadler's Wells) also produced Spasha (GB) (Shamardal), whose trio of stakes winners is headed by G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 Sprint Cup hero Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}) and G2 Gran Criterium victor Royal Youmzain (Fr) (Youmzain {Ire}). Mylady's fourth dam is G3 Lancashire Oaks victrix Sandy Island (GB) (Mill Reef), herself kin to runaway G1 Epsom Derby-winning sire Slip Anchor (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). Sandy Island's descendants also include G1 Sisterna S. victor Summer Passage (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), with this being the dam line of legendary racemare and producer Schwarzgold (Ger) (Alchimist {Ger}).

Jolie Comtesse Tops Inaugural Thoroughbid Sale

Jolie Comtesse (Fr) (Evasive) (lot 6), a half-sister to this year's G1 Goodwood Cup winner Trueshan (Fr) in foal to his sire Planteur (Ire), proved the top draw at the inaugural Thoroughbid online auction on Sunday. Offered by Dunraven Stud, the 8-year-old-who last year produced her first foal, a filly by Moss Vale (Ire)-was purchased by AK Stud for £60,000.

Jolie Comtesse was one of seven sold from 23 offered. The next highest price was £21,000 paid by Richard Burton for lot 7, JD Moore's Kilbarchan (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}), a 5-year-old mare carrying her second foal by Blue Bresil (Fr). Kilbarchan was a three time winner and has a colt foal by Sea Moon on the ground.
