Dascombe To Train Osarus Co-Top Lot

The first horse through the ring at the concluding session of the Osarus Yearling Sale held his position as the leader throughout the day, ultimately gaining co-top lot honours at €50,000.

The son of Gutaifan (Ire), bred and consigned as lot 141 by the sale's leading vendor Alain Chopard of Haras des Faunes, is out of the stakes-placed dual winner Senafe (GB) (Byron {GB}) from a family which includes the Group 1 winner Madame Chiang (GB) (Archipenko). He was bought by Toby Jones of TJ Bloodstock on behalf of Middleham Park Racing and will be sent to Britain to be trained by Tom Dascombe.

With no yearling sale held at Osarus's complex at La Teste de Buch racecourse last year, comparisons in this year's trade against the markers of 2019 show a pronounced downturn in figures across all sectors. That said, the second session picked up a little from a slower start to the sale on Tuesday.

An overall clearance rate of 62.5% was attained from the sale of 163 of the 261 horses offered. Turnover of €1,762,000 was less than half the tally achieved two years ago, when the aggregate was just north of €4 million for 200 horses sold. The average dropped from €21,090 to €11,777 and the median was down to €9,000 from €17,000.

The top-priced filly of the sale was a member of the first crop of Haras du Logis stallion Cloth Of Stars (Ire). Consigned by Jedburgh Stud, lot 191 is out of the unraced Wheels Of Love (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}), a half-sister to the Meydan Group 2 winner Frankyfourfingers (Fr) (Sunday Break {Jpn}). The filly, bought for €40,000, was one of seven purchases by Marc-Antoine Berghgracht's MAB Agency.

Time Test Breeding Right Tops Tattersalls Online Sale

Leading the way at the Tattersalls Online September 15 Sale was a breeding right in first-season sire Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) as lot 27, which went for 85,000gns to Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock. The stallion, who stands at The National Stud, has been enjoying a purple patch of late with his first juveniles and has celebrated black-type success with Group 3 winners Rocchigiani (GB) and Romantic Time (GB), while Tardis (GB) has already won a listed race and Sunset Shiraz (Ire) ran third in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. on Sunday after placing in the G2 Debutante S. earlier in her career. The 9-year-old also boasts Italian Group 3 third The King's Horses (GB) and has seven winners from 23 starters to date.

Ross Doyle said, “He's a young sire going places, by a top sire in Dubawi out of a well bred Dansili (GB) mare which we love. He's been very well supported in recent years and very well managed by Tim Lane and the team at the National Stud. We have bought it for a client who will support him with some very nice mares.”

“It's a great result and a true reflection on his success to date,” said The National Stud's Head of Nominations and Sales Joe Callan. “The Tattersalls Online platform offered an excellent opportunity for a breeding right to be offered on the back of Time Test's recent outstanding results.”

The second highest price on the day was 35,000gns for a breeding right in proven Group 1 stallion Havana Gold (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 32), who stands at Tweenhills. Haras du Mont Dit Mont purchased the breeding right in the sire of G1 Flying Five S. victor Havana Grey (GB).

Sophomore filly Espouse (Ire) (Elusive Pimpernel) was snapped up for 32,000gns by agent Alex Elliott, who was bidding from America. A winner in five starts, the bay is a half-sister to the placed juvenile filly Azure Blue (Ire) (El Kabeir), while her dam Sea of Dreams (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB]) is a half-sister to group winners Pincheck (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Valeria Messalina (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}).

“My mother part owns the 2-year-old half-sister Azure Blue who was very unlucky on her most recent start and we hope could be stakes class,” said Elliott. “She's a filly from a young family that I like a lot who had plenty of ability so I'm excited to have bought her.”

Patrick Cooper, representing Simmonstown Stud, said of lot 9, “We had a great sale. It was all very easy and for the lower end of the market, online is probably the way forward.”

Overall, 11 lots sold from 25 offered for a gross of 188,200gns. The average was 17,109gns and the median settled at 9,000gns.

Dewhurst Likely For Bayside Boy

Group winner Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), who won the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster on Sept. 11, is being pointed to the Oct. 9 G1 Dewhurst S. A winner at first asking at Newbury in July, the Teme Valley and Ballylinch Stud-owned colt was second by only a head to Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) in the Listed Denford S. at there on Aug. 14. The Roger Varian trainee defeated The Queen's G3 Betway Solario S. winner Reach For The Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) by a head in the Champagne.

“Saturday was very satisfying,” said Varian, reflecting on his charge's Champagne victory. “His form is looking very strong. If you look at the distance between us and Masekela at Newbury and the distance between [Godolphin's subsequent G1 National S. winner] Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Masekela at Newmarket in the [G2] Superlative [S. at Newmarket in July], that form is all starting to tie in.

“We were very impressed with Charlie's horse at The Curragh on Sunday–but our horse has only had three starts as well, and he couldn't do much more than beat Reach For The Moon in the Champagne. He'd have to be considered as a high-class juvenile, I think.

“He's a horse that will stay beyond seven furlongs, but he's not a slow horse. He's a strong traveller and has won a Group 2 race that often points to the Dewhurst.

“He wouldn't be out of place in the Dewhurst field, and I'm sure that will be the number one target–but he's got entries in all the big races, and we'll have to see how he trains over the next fortnight or so and speak to connections.”

What’s In a Name: Harrow, Harrovian and Nuvolari

One single racing day in England–Thursday, Sept. 9-was rich in suggestive racehorse names.

Two winners in Doncaster within two hours of each other-juvenile colt Harrow (Ire) (El Kabeir–School Run {Ire} by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and 5-year-old gelding Harrovian (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}–Alma Mater {GB} by Sadler's Wells)–manifested ingenious connections (via their dams' names) to the famous public school founded in 1572 and attended by young Winston Churchill. Singular coincidence.

With Epsom winner Nuvolari (GB) (c, 2, by Time Test {GB}–Luang Prabang {Ire} by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) we are in another territory. Italian Tazio Nuvolari, born in Mantua, was the uncrowned super-champion of motor racing in the 1930/1940s, in a similar way to the figure British legend Stirling Moss was in the 1950s/1960s. “The Flying Mantuan” raced everywhere and won anywhere, including the 24 Hours at Le Mans, the crazy “Mille Miglia” Carrera-like race on the open roads of Italy, and many pre-Formula 1 circuit Grand Prix. Nuvolari was famous for being totally fearless, oblivious to the most serious injuries, and very creative in the driving of semi-destroyed vehicles–at times making do without a proper steering wheel, or a functioning set of brakes, or a full complement of four tires. His Epsom winner namesake seems to share that formidable determination and long may it continue.
