Bangkok Retired to Chapel Stud

Multiple group winner Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Tanaghum {GB}, by Darshaan {GB}) has been retired to Chapel Stud in the UK for 2022. A fee will be announced at a later date for the dual-purpose stallion. The bay, who was bred by Barronstown Stud, will stand at Chapel on behalf of owner/breeder Simon Davies. The deal was brokered by Billy Jackson-Stops of JS Bloodstock Consultancy.

A 500,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, Bangkok raced in the colours of King Power Racing. Trained by Andrew Balding, his best win was in the 2021 G2 Sky Bet York S., while he also scored in the G3 Bet365 Classic Trial in 2019 and two editions of the Listed Betway Winter Derby Trial (2020/21). The son of the stakes-placed Tanaghum also placed three more times at group level and retires with a mark of 24-6-6-1 and earnings of $926,107.

Chapel Stud Director Roisin Close said, “I am delighted to be standing Bangkok on behalf of Simon Davies, Welsh Marches Stud. He is an exciting addition to both Chapel Stud and the British stallion ranks. Bangkok was a high-class, tough, and consistent multiple stakes winner, and had an excellent career over four seasons. He is undeniably attractive with great presence and conformation, all backed up by an outstanding pedigree.”

Simon Davies added, “We are extremely excited to add Bangkok to stand alongside Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) at Chapel Stud. He was an immensely tough and sound racehorse and as the only son of Australia to stand in Britain will complement Planteur perfectly and give breeders another quality option next year.”

The April foal is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Matterhorn (Ire) (Raven's Pass), Group 3 winner Tactic (GB), stakes winner Yaazy (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who also placed twice at the Group 3 level, and the stakes-placed Zahoo (Ire) (Nayef). Another half-sister produced top European miler and four-time Group 1 winner Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). His second dam Mehthaaf (Nureyev) landed the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas.

Andrew Balding said, “Bangkok has been a pleasure to train for the last four seasons. His class has enabled him to achieve results at a variety of distances and his courage and constitution are second to none. He has the ability, looks and temperament to be a top-class performer at stud, and we will certainly be supporting him with mares.”

Pat Eddery Inducted into QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame

The late Pat Eddery has been inducted into the QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame. Eddery, who died in 2015, was named champion jockey on 11 occasions from 1974-1996 and booted home more than 6,000 winners. A total of 4,632 were in Great Britain, a figure exceeded only by the legendary Sir Gordon Richards, who had 4,870. Eddery won 14 British Classics, including three Derbys with Grundy (GB) (Great Nephew {GB}), Golden Fleece (Nijinsky II) and Quest For Fame (GB) (Rainbow Quest). It was aboard Grundy that Eddery rode in the 'Race of the Century' where his mount triumphed over St Leger winner Bustino (GB) (Busted {GB}) in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. in 1975.

His daughter Natasha Eddery-Dunsdon, a competitive showjumper said, “He was, and always will be, one of the all-time greats. When I think about what he was like as a jockey, I think about his quiet concentration, his focus, the determination to win. That's what set him apart, his desire to win and to beat his comrades–winning was everything to him, second best just wasn't an option.

“He had the best hands of any jockey, he was a kind rider, intuitive, he just connected with horses. If he were riding a puller, he'd simply give the horse the rein and drop his hands on the neck–I've personally tried this and I always get run away with–but they never did that with dad, they just stayed totally relaxed.

“Entering the Hall of Fame would have made him so proud; I only wish he were still here to experience this special moment. It's one myself and my family will cherish.”

Jockey Frankie Dettori said, “We used to call him 'God' because he was like God.”

Four-time champion trainer Richard Hannon, Sr., who Eddery rode for many years, added, “I'm sure Pat would have loved to have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. It's nice to be remembered. He was a very good jockey, he was very good with horses and he had a great memory of them too. If he rode one 18 months before, he'd know exactly all about the horse. He had a great brain.

“You didn't have to tell Pat anything really. He just went out and did his job. As a trainer you do the job to ensure the horse is fit and everything is fine, but he used to go out and do his own thing, however the race worked out. That makes a jockey for me–if the race doesn't go right for you, you think of another way round it.”

Other champions associated with the late jockey included El Gran Senor (Northern Dancer), Zafonic (Gone West), Danehill (Danzig), Sadler's Wells (Northern Dancer) and Warning (GB) (Known Fact). Among his quartet of Arc winners was Dancing Brave (Lyphard) in 1986. He also rode Pebbles (GB) (Sharpen Up {GB}) to victory in the 1985 GI Breeders' Cup Turf and the 1986 Japan Cup winner Jupiter Island (GB) (St. Paddy {GB}), both for trainer Clive Brittain.

His family will be presented with a commissioned medal, designed by Asprey and unique within British racing, which will be displayed as part of a special Hall of Fame exhibition at QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot on Oct. 16.

Saudi Cup Promoted to Group 1 Status

Saudi Arabia's $20-million Saudi Cup has been awarded Group 1 status beginning in 2022 it was announced during Monday's virtual meeting of the Executive Council of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA).

The move follows the promotion of both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain from Part III to Part II of the ICS Book by the International Grading and Race Planning Advisory Committee (IRPAC). In addition, the Neom Turf Cup, Saudi Derby, STC 1,351 Turf Sprint, Riyadh Dirt Sprint and Red Sea Turf, as well as Bahrain's Bahrain International Trophy have all gained Group 3 status. A trio of races are now considered international listed races-the Al Methaq Cup, His Majesty the King's Cup and His Royal Crown Prince Cup-all in Bahrain. The Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA) approved the measures.

Also, during the meeting led by IFHA Chair Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, terms began for Jim Gagliano, Brian Kavanagh, Masayuki Goto, and Horacio Esposito as Vice-Chairs of the IFHA. The Chair and Vice-Chairs of the Federation will serve a three-year mandate from 2021 to 2024. Both Bruce Sherwin, Director of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and Dr. Paull Khan, Secretary-General of the European and Mediterranean Horseracing Federation (EMHF) were appointed to the IFHA Executive Council.

That body also endorsed the chair and nominations to the IFHA Finance Committee, which will be chaired by Jim Lawson of Woodbine Entertainment Group. Oscar Bertoletti, CEO of OSAF; Olivier Delloye, CEO of France Galop; Suzanne Eade, Chief Executive for Horse Racing Ireland; and Greg Nichols, Director of Racing Australia, constitute the Finance Committee. The Governance Committee Chair will be BHA Chief Executive Julie Harrington. A new Commercial and Marketing Committee was formed, with Olivier Delloye to serve as its chair.

The Executive Council also approved the selection of key positions for its global Executive Office, and Andrew Harding will continue to lead the Executive Office as the Federation's Executive Director. Andrew Chesser, Manager of Registration Services for The Jockey Club (USA) and previously Secretary General for the IFHA; James Ogilvy, Executive Manager, International and Racing Regulation at The Hong Kong Jockey Club and previously Technical Advisor for the IFHA; and Henri Pouret, Managing Director, Racing Operations for France Galop, were all named Directors of the IFHA global Executive Office. Godolphin Newbloods Intrigue on Tuesday

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. PERSEUS WAY (IRE) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) is one of two notable Godolphin newcomers on the day, being out of a half-sister to this year's G1 2000 Guineas runner-up Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and to the smart Latharnach (Iffraaj {GB}) and Falls of Lora (Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}). Charlie Appleby has charge of the March-foaled chestnut, who encounters The Eclipse Partnership's fellow newcomer Elena's Gift (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a Ralph Beckett-trained half-sister to the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate), the smart Best Approach (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and this year's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac winner Erasmo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

SENSE OF POWER (IRE) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) is the second debutante from Godolphin's Charlie Appleby stable to fire the imagination on the afternoon, being a €330,000 Goffs November Foal graduate whose dam is a half to the GIII Appleton S. winner and promoted GI Gulfstream Park Turf H. second All Included (Include) and the GII Honeymoon Handicap S. scorer Sarach (Arch). He encounters Shadwell's debut fifth Laasudood (War Front), a Sir Michael Stoute-trained son of the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and GI Flower Bowl Invitational heroine Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) whose half-sister Aghareed (Kingmambo) has produced the Sea the Stars (Ire) duo of Baaeed (GB) and Hukum (Ire).
