Future Stars on Show on Sunday

While Sunday's action is a notch or two below that of Saturday, there are two fascinating contests in Germany and Ireland to savour in the G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten and the Listed Staffordstown Stud S.

In the former at Cologne, Gestut Ittlingen's Antero (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}) looks as exciting as any of the line-up following his seven-length maiden win at Dortmund Sept. 19. Gestut Rottgen's Ariolo (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) was second to the filly Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire} in the Listed Junioren-Preis at Dusseldorf Sept. 12, with the re-opposing Millionaire (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Sea Bay (Ger) (New Bay {GB}) behind in third and fourth.

The Curragh's Staffordstown Stud S. over a mile sees Newtown Anner Stud Farm's 'TDN Rising Star' Angels Wrath (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) bid to build on the impression of her emphatic debut win over seven furlongs on Dundalk's Polytrack Sept. 24. She will have to be every bit as smart as she looked there on her turf debut against the likes of Martin Schwartz's Sept. 11 Listed Ingabelle S. second Limiti Di Greccio (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) and Lindsay Laroche's Sept. 12 G1 Moyglare Stud S. third and Aug. 21 G2 Debutante S. and Sept. 26 G3 Weld Park S. runner-up Sunset Shiraz (Ire) (Time Test {GB}).

Frankel’s Mostahdaf Stars In The Darley

It may have been Godolphin's day up to the nine-furlong G3 Darley S., but the closer of Future Champions Day at Newmarket belonged to Shadwell's exciting prospect Mostahdaf (GB) (Frankel {GB}) as he rewarded the patience of connections with this career-best. Beaten only once so far when meeting trouble in running in 12th in the G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 15, the homebred half-brother to Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) had shown the benefit of a subsequent break when returning with a success in Sandown's Listed Fortune S. over a mile on soft ground Sept. 15. Always travelling within himself just off the pace on the wing throughout the early stages, the 3-1 second favourite was committed by Jim Crowley on the front end with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Readily asserting from there, the homebred kept the course-and-distance Cambridgeshire H. winner Bedouin's Story (GB) (Farhh {GB}) comfortably at bay to score by 1 3/4 lengths. “He's done nothing wrong during his career. He was boxed in when he ran in the St James's Palace Stakes and never got a run, so that was the end of that,” John Gosden said. “His best trip is a mile and a quarter–we've always thought that–and I was going to run him in the Champion Stakes at Ascot next week, but I was overruled and that's why we ran here.”

Introduced over seven furlongs on Newcastle's Tapeta Mar. 16, Mostahdaf followed an easy win there with a defeat of well-regarded peers including the subsequent Listed Dee S. winner El Drama (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in a mile conditions race on Kempton's Polytrack Apr. 5 which used to be known as the Easter S. when carrying listed status. After earning his Royal tilt in the Listed Heron S. at Sandown May 20, he was badly interfered with when launching his challenge two out and lost all chance as Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) cut loose. His reappearance in the Fortune showed he had gone the right way since that reversal and this display was even smoother despite taking on proven older horses with more experience. “He's a classy horse and probably a horse for next year, but we will have a look at the race in Bahrain [the International Trophy],” Gosden Sr added. We'll have a talk about that with connections. He would go on good-to-firm and good-to-soft, he just wouldn't want it firm. Nazeef did exceptionally well as a four year old. She went from a Chelmsford handicap to winning two group 1s at four and not many do that. You do look at the family trait.”

Mostahdaf's aforementioned half-sister Nazeef improved with age and experience and annexed last year's G1 Falmouth S., G1 Sun Chariot S. and G2 Duke of Cambridge S., so the future looks bright for the latest progeny of Handassa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to fly the flag of the Listed Garnet S. winner. She is kin to the GII San Gabriel S. winner and GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile-placed Desert Stone (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and his full-brother Euginio (Ire) who also took this prize in 2018 only to be disqualified due to a positive sample for a prohibited substance. The third dam Star (GB) (Most Welcome {GB}) produced the G1 July Cup-winning sire Pastoral Pursuits (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and his G1 Haydock Sprint Cup-winning full-brother Goodricke (GB). Handassa's yearling colt is by Dark Angel (Ire), while she also has a 2021 full-brother to Mostahdaf.

Icone d’Aubrelle Brings €150,000 at Latest Auctav Sale

The latest Auctav Flash Sale saw winning 3-year-old gelding Icone d'Aubrelle (Fr) (Cokoriko {Fr}) bring €150,000 from Highflyer Bloodstock. A winner at Bordeaux-le-Bouscat, Icone d'Aubrelle is from a versatile Aga Khan female family that has performed with credit on the Flat and over jumps.

“He's not a particularly precocious horse but he has a lot of improvement. I really liked when he won in Bordeaux after making a huge mistake at the penultimate hurdle. He will have a break for six months to let him grow and strengthen. He will then be trained in England for an English owner,” explained bloodstock agent David Powell.

Dual winner Purplepay (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) was withdrawn and is targeting the G1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud on Oct. 23.

“We are very pleased with the sale of Icone d'Aubrelle,” said Auctav General Director Arnaud Angeliaume. “This 3-year-old gelding really appealed to us and we thank all those who showed interest in him and Highflyer Bloodstock for this purchase. We would obviously have liked to see the auction with Purplepay but we respect the decision and the ambitions of her connections.

Mehmas’ Malavath Strikes For Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte Success

Everest Racing, David Redvers and Barbara Keller's 2-year-old filly Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) encountered promising sorts when hitting the board over six furlongs in both August starts at Deauville and graduated in a six-furlong Chantilly maiden last month. Returning over the same course and distance of that breakthrough score for Saturday's G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte, the Francis Graffard trainee exhibited late dash to claim a first black-type success with aplomb. The 15-2 chance was swiftly away and tracked the leading duo in third through halfway. Nudged along passing the quarter-mile marker, she inched ever closer thereafter and quickened smartly inside the final furlong to deny the forward-running G3 Prix de Cabourg victrix Have A Good Day (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) by a neck in the dying strides.

“My main concern beforehand was her ability, or lack thereof, to cope with the soft ground and I was quite apprehensive,” admitted Graffard. “Obviously, I was wrong and am delighted for the owners, the filly and my team. It really is a great result. I have always been high on her and her form was excellent. She doesn't show much in the mornings at home, but from day one she has been a different proposition in the afternoons. I don't think she will stay a mile, maybe seven furlongs, but if she is only a top six-furlong filly that's fine with me. We will see how she winters and, on looks, I have the feeling that she will train on. We will start off [next year], probably over the same [six-furlong] trip, and we'll see where we go from there.”

Malavath, the first of three foals, becomes the ninth pattern-race winner for her second-crop sire and is a daughter of Fidaaha (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), herself a full-sister to the GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S. victrix Ceisteach (Ire). Fidaaha is also half to MSW G1 Prix Rothschild and G1 Prix Jean Romanet placegetter Steip Amach (Ire) (Vocalised). The March-foaled chestnut's third dam Sharafanya (Ire) (Zafonic) is kin to G2 Goldene Peitsche victor Giant Sandman (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and Listed Harvest S. placegetter Shalamantika (Ire) (Nashwan), herself the dam of G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine Shalanaya (Ire) (Lomitas {GB}) and G2 Prix Chaudeay winner Shankardeh (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}).
