Consistency The Key For Stella Veloce In Kikuka Sho

The Japanese Triple Crown concludes Sunday afternoon with the running of the G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) over a metric mile and seven furlongs at Hanshin Racecourse. With G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) hero Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) pointing towards next weekend's G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) and G1 Tokyo Yushun victor Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) also giving the race a miss, the Kikuka Sho is really anybody's horse race.

Stella Veloce (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) is liable to jump as the race favourite as he goes second-up since his third in the Tokyo Yushun May 30. Having also filled the third spot in the Guineas, the dark bay was the 2-1 second-elect in the Sept. 26 G2 Kobe Shimbun Hai (2200mT) at Chukyo–one of two trials for the Kikuka Sho–and raced near the tail of the field over rain-affected ground before rallying through the stretch to best Red Genesis (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) by a half-length, while Shahryar could do no better than fourth as the $1.80 (4-5) pick. By a Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner, Stella Veloce should find Sunday's trip within his scope, particularly on a sounder surface.

“He was plus [20]kg for his last race, but since the spring he's certainly developed a lot,” said trainer Naosuke Sugai. “Despite the ground last time, he recovered well and there was no damage from that run, so we can look to the Kikuka Sho with him.”

Orthoclase (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) looks to follow in the hoofprints of his sire, who romped by five lengths in soft ground in the 2013 Kikuka Sho. The son of MG1SW champion older mare Marialite (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) won his first two outings at three and closed the season with a runner-up effort in the G1 Hopeful S. (2000mT). The dark bay has just one start under his belt this season, a running-on third in the G2 Asahi Hai St Lite Kinen (2200m), two lengths behind the upset-minded Asamano Itazura (Jpn) (Victoire Pisa {Jpn}).

Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}), whose own sire won the first two legs of the Triple Crown before having to miss the Leger, was second from a handy position in the Satsuki Sho before fading to sixth in the Derby. He disappointed in the St Lite Kinen, finishing last but one, but can bounce back if seeing out the trip this weekend.

American-bred Air Sage (Point of Entry) is three-for-four lifetime and has accomplished something that none of his 17 rivals can boast. Bred in Kentucky by Dr. Naoya and Marie Yoshida's Winchester Farm, the half-brother to GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior) and to the useful Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}) is the lone member of the Kikuka Sho field to have won a race past 12 furlongs, having led throughout to take a second-level allowance over a mile and five-eighths at Sapporo Aug. 21.

ONE EVENING (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) is one of two newcomers from John and Thady Gosden's set-up, which took this race with Lady Bamford's subsequent G1 Prix de Diane heroine Star of Seville (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) in 2014. Pointers Lead Goffs UK Autumn Sale

Point-to-pointers proved popular during the one-day Goffs UK Autumn Sale on Thursday, with trade topped by Music Drive (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}) (lot 129). Offered by Colin Bowe's Milestone Stables, the 4-year-old Music Drive won a point-to-point at Monksgrange on Sept. 26, and was picked up by Aidan O'Ryan and Gordon Elliott for ÂŁ90,000.

At the close of trade, 113 horses sold (66%) from 170 offered for an aggregate of ÂŁ1,014,800 that was up 29% on last year. The average jumped 83% to ÂŁ8,981, while the median climbed 67% to ÂŁ5,000.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “It is always difficult to make direct comparisons between horses in training sales as any trade will be determined by the strength of the catalogue and the quality of the horses on offer. With that in mind, we were delighted with the strength of the sale and, as ever, we are indebted to all the vendors who put their trust in the Goffs UK team. We would obviously wish all buyers the best of luck with their new purchases, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to Doncaster for the final time this year on Friday, Dec. 3.”

Zarak Filly Leads The Way At Arqana

DEAUVILLE, France–Zarak (Fr), the Aga Khan Studs' beautifully bred son of Dubawi (Ire) and Arc heroine Zarkava (Fr), has made a promising start with his first 2-year-old runners this season and currently has 11 winners to his name from 26 runners. At the weekend he was represented by his first stakes winner when the Gestut Haus Zoppenbroich homebred Lizaid (Ger) the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin for Peter Schiergen at Baden-Baden, while another recent winner, Zagrey (Fr), gave an important update to the filly who topped trade as Part III of the Arqana October Yearling Sale got underway on Thursday.

Lot 568, the Zarak filly from Haras de Castillon out of Grey Anatomy (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}), was bought for €95,000 by Anne-Sophie Yoh Benet of YOHEA, having received a boost to her page by the victory of her full-brother on Oct. 11 at Amiens.

She is also a half-sister to the treble winner and Group 1-placed Graignes (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}).

“She is a beautiful, well-bred filly, and she really had something special,” said Yoh Benet. “I bought her for a new client for whom I bought several broodmares last year and who wanted to invest in yearlings. We have bought five in total, they will stay in France and we will decide on the trainer according to the profiles of the fillies.”

At a drenched Deauville racecourse on Thursday, the Al Shaqab juvenile Welwal (GB) continued his upwardly mobile progression with his second victory in three starts, and a yearling by his sire Shalaa (Ire) was the leading colt of the day when bought by John Hammond and Federico Barberini for €43,000. Offered as lot 609 as one of a smart draft from Guillaume and Camille Vitse's Normandie Breeding, he is a son of the 2-year-old listed winner Luna Royale (Fr) (Royal Applause {GB}).

A smaller fourth session of the sale saw 76 yearlings sold–or 83.5%–at an average of €16,007 (+15%) and median of €14,0000. The day's aggregate of €1,216,500 pushed the tally for the sale as a whole past €26 million, which is already up by 50% on 2021 with one session of around 100 yearlings to sell on Friday from 11am.
