Prizemoney Boosts For Saudi Cup Card

In addition to the previously announced allocation of Group 1 status to the $20-million Saudi Cup and Group 3 status to five undercard Thoroughbred races, the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia revealed in a press conference on Thursday some key purse increases for undercard races.

The 2022 Saudi Cup meeting, which will take place on Feb. 25 and 26, will be worth $35.1-million, making it the world's richest race meeting. Prizemoney for the G3 Neom Turf Cup and the G3 1351 Turf Sprint have each been boosted by $500,000, and are now worth $1.5-million apiece.

The JCSA also revealed a series of new qualifying races for the Neom Turf Cup and 1351 Turf Sprint. The GI Pegasus World Cup Turf, G3 Bahrain International Trophy and the G3 Challenge Cup at Hanshin in Japan will be qualifiers for the Neom Turf Cup. The G2 Hanshin Cup has been added as a qualifier for the 1351 Turf Sprint. The three qualifying contests for the Saudi Cup remain the same: the GI Pegasus World Cup, the G1 Champions Cup in Japan and the Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques Cup.

“We could never have imagined the immediate impact The Saudi Cup would have on the international racing landscape, or indeed on our domestic racing product,” said HRH Prince Bandar Bin Khalid Al Faisal, Chairman of the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia. “In 2020 we launched our first ever international meeting and less than three years later we enter our first racing season as a Part II racing nation, having been promoted by the IFHA earlier this month. We are now looking forward to hosting the world's most valuable race, The Saudi Cup, as a Group 1 for the first time, as well as five Group 3 races on the undercard. None of this would have been possible without the buy in and support of the international racing community and, on behalf of the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia, I would like to thank everyone within the industry for the way they have embraced The Saudi Cup.

“As The Saudi Cup makes advances, so does our domestic racing offering. We continue to focus not only the international aspects of this sport but also understand that building strong foundations upon which a sustainable industry can be built is a vital element to securing the future of this incredible and unique sport for generations to come, both in Saudi Arabia and overseas.”

Mohaather Anchors Shadwell Roster

Last year's G1 Sussex S. scorer Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) will stand his second season at Shadwell's Nunnery Stud in 2022 for a fee of £15,000, down slightly from his opening price of £20,000. The highest-rated son of Showcasing, Mohaather covered 146 mares this year.

Tom Pennington, nominations and marketing manager at Shadwell, said, “We've taken the decision to reduce Mohaather's fee for 2022 in recognition of the fact that there is a significant premium placed upon first-season sires in the commercial market, and that stallions entering their second year need to be competitively priced to reflect that reality. There is no question, considering how high stallion fees are across the board now, that £15,000 rates as fantastic value. Mohaather was an exceptional winner of the Sussex S., showing a

lethal turn of foot so rarely seen in milers, and he was also a group winner at two and three. He was given fantastic support from a diverse cross-section of breeders this year and consequently covered a strong book of mares. We're really looking forward to welcoming his first foals in 2022.”

Mohaather stands alongside Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who are both unchanged from 2021 at £5,000. Tasleet's first yearlings have sold for up to 80,000gns this year, while Eqtidaar's first foals are now on the ground.

The Nunnery Stud stallions will be available to view at Beech House Stud in Newmarket during the Tattersalls December Breeding Stock sale.

Le Havre Remains At €40,000 As Sumbe Announce Fees

Nurlan's Bizakov's Sumbe operation has announced its stallion fees for 2022, with flagship sire Le Havre (Ire) remaining at €40,000 and Golden Horde (Ire), who covered his first book of mares this year, being reduced to €8,000 from €10,000.

“Le Havre, the sire of 45 stakes winners, had another stellar year in 2021 and we feel very fortunate to stand such a high-class stallion,” said Sumbe's Mathieu Alex, who indicated that Bizakov has supported Golden Horde, a Group 1-winning son of Lethal Force (Ire), with 20 of his best mares.

He added, “Next year looks particularly exciting with the first foals of Golden Horde arriving. We have a lot of faith in this high-class athlete, who was a Group 1 winner at Royal Ascot and a Group winner at two. Golden Horde is a beautiful horse and breeders love him when they see him. We have supported him with very good mares and will continue to do so. We really appreciate all the support and thank the breeders for their commitment.”

The Normandy-based Sumbe roster also includes Her Majesty the Queen's Recorder (GB), a group-winning son of Galileo (Ire), and the well-bred Treville (GB), an Oasis Dream (GB) half-brother to champion juvenile Too Darn Hot (GB) out of the stellar racemare Dar Re Mi (GB). Recorder will stand at €4,000, while De Treville, who has joined Sumbe since Bizakov's purchase of Haras du Mezeray in March, is priced at €2,500.
