Stallion Shares and Breeding Rights For Sale on Arqana Online

A selection of stallion shares and breeding rights, anchored by 1/50th of a share in top French sire Siyouni (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) (lot 1), will be offered at the Arqana Online Sale on Nov. 23. Seven lots have been revealed so far, and His Highness The Aga Khan's bay continues to go from strength to strength this season after his son Sottsass (Fr)'s victory in the 2020 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. In 2021, Siyouni is responsible for St Mark's Basilica (Fr), a dual Classic winner of four Group 1 races this term and five overall. He covered 139 mares at a fee of €140,000, and his yearlings made up to €1,500,000.

There is also a 1/50th share in young Aga Khan Studs' stallion and Group 1 winner Zarak (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 2) available. Already represented by 12 2-year-old winners in his first crop, the son of Arc heroine Zarkava (Ire) (Zamindar) has sired the Group 1-placed duo of Times Square (Fr) and Purplepay (Fr).

Shares of 1/50th each are also available for other first-season sires Zelzal (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 3) and Al Wukair (Ire) (Dream Ahead) (lot 4), who both won at the highest level and stand at Al Shaqab's Haras de Bouquetot. The former has 10 2-year-old winners including listed winner Zelda (Fr), while the latter has 11 juvenile winners so far.

A breeding right in Darley stallion Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 5) will also be offered for sale. Based at Dalham Hall Stud, the bay has seven stakes performers in his first crop and sired his first Group 1 winner in Rougir (Fr) in the 2021 G1 Prix de l'Opera. She runs in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Saturday.

Two other 1/50th shares are available to date, to National Hunt stallions Masked Marvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) (lot 6) and No Risk At All (Fr) (My Risk {Fr}) (lot 7).

ThoroughBid to Hold Two Auctions Prior to 2022

ThoroughBid will hold two more auctions before the start of 2022-Nov. 28 and Dec. 19. The online auction house will accept entries until Nov. 19, and Dec. 10, respectively.

Weatherbys Releases 2021 Return of Mares

The Weatherbys Return of Mares, through Oct. 20, was published on Thursday. A total of 12,920 live foals were registered so far in The General Stud Book. In 2020 the number was 12,778 and in 2019 13,443 were registered. Of the 12,920 foals, 4,282 (+1%) are registered with the GB suffix and 8,638 (+1%) in Ireland. In 2020 those numbers were 4,236 (GB) and 8,542 (Ire), while two years ago the number of registered foals stood at 4,655 (GB) and 8,788 (Ire).

Currently there are 22,720 broodmares at stud, an increase of 358 from 2020's 22,362. There were 22,919 broodmares in 2019. Of these 22,720 broodmares, 2,949 were not covered, a higher number than 2,667 in 2020 and 2,927 in 2019. Among those not covered, the mares were split with 1,293 (GB) and 1,656 in Ireland. There were also 6,016 no returns and 355 mares were barren.

In Britain, the number of stallions increased by 10 from 149 in 2020 to 159. In Ireland, the number of stallions declined by one from 232 in 2020. National Hunt stallions dominated by number of mares bred with Sea The Stars (Ire)'s Affinisea (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire) on top with 324. Close behind him was Order of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) at 312 and Maxios (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) at 309. Rounding out the top four was Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) at 302. The busiest Flat stallion in 2021 was Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who sired a record 56 first-crop 2-year-old winners. The Tally-Ho resident, who made a bright start to his stud career, covered 292 mares.

Benbatl Retired to Big Red Farm in Japan

Godolphin homebred Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}–Nahrain {GB}, by Selkirk), a multiple Group 1 winner in Dubai, Germany and Australia, has been retired from racing and will take up stallion duties at Big Red Farm in Japan. A fee for the 7-year-old, who is Dubawi's top earning, will be announced later.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor said, “Benbatl was a great horse for Godolphin, winning many important races throughout the world including Group 1 contests in Dubai, Germany and Australia.

“He was the ultimate professional in everything he did, which made him an easy horse to train. Everyone at Godolphin Stables will miss him–but he has a very good pedigree, and we are looking forward to seeing how he performs in his new career.”

A winner on debut at Doncaster for trainer Saeed bin Suroor as a 3-year-old, the bay won the G3 Hampton Court S. that year and was placed twice at group level from seven starts. At four, he won the G3 Singspiel S. first up at Meydan, then added the G2 Al Rashidiya there, ran second in the G1 Jebel Hatta and swooped to victory in the G1 Dubai Turf in March of 2018, his first top-level win. In July, he captured the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen in Munich two starts later and eked out a nose victory in the Caulfield S. Down Under. His final start of the campaign was arguably his best effort-running second to the might Australian mare Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) in the G1 Cox Plate that October.

Given 11 months on the sidelines, Benbatl returned in September of 2019 to win his first G2 Joel S. in England–he would run third in 2020. At six, he added the G2 Singspiel S. and the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 in January and early February, respectively, before completing the trifecta in the inaugural $20-million Saudi Cup in Riyadh. Lightly raced at seven, Benbatl was a narrow second in the G2 Celebration Mile S. before winning his second Joel S. in his penultimate start. He retires with a mark of 25-11-4-3 and $7,853,165 in earnings.

A full-brother to the stakes-placed Fooraat (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), Benbatl is a son of G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine Nahrain, who also won the GI Flower Bowl Invitational S. and was runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. His fourth dam, La Mer (NZ) (Copenhagen II {GB}), was a New Zealand Horse of the Year.
