Time Test Leads Goffs Online Breeding Rights Catalogue

An online sale of three stallion breeding rights, in Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus]), was announced by Goffs on Wednesday. Bidding opens on the timed sale after the last mare is sold during the Goffs February Sale on Thursday, Feb. 10, and closes at 12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11. Entries are still being accepted by Goffs. The leading first-season sire by black-type winners, Time Test has sired the Group 1-placed Sunset Shiraz (Ire) and the Group 3 winners Romantic Time (GB) and Rocchigiani (GB), as well as the listed duo of Tardis (GB) and The King's Horses (GB). He stands for £15,000 at The National Stud this year.

Darley's Territories sired pricy auction purchase Rougir (Fr), who won the G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines last year and also counts the group placed Masseto (GB) and Rhoscolyn (GB) among his progeny. He commands £10,000 at Dalham Hall Stud.

Tops for first-season sires with winners (35) in 2021, Cotai Glory counts G2 Prix Robert Papin winner Atomic Force (Ire) among his best runners. The chestnut, who stands at Tally-Ho Stud for €8,500 this season, also has sired the group placed Pearl Glory (Ire), Eldrickjones (Ire) and the listed winner Purciaretta (Ire).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Goffs Online was first introduced to the market in 2020 and since its inception it has proven a market leading platform. We have used it to aid our live auctions on both sides of the Irish Sea as well as hosting timed online sales which has seen it sell horses up to £300,000.

“We have secured the sale of breeding rights to three very promising young sires which have strong commercial appeal and this online auction enhances the extensive offering at our three-day Goffs February Sale next week. This online sale will open at the conclusion of the final day of breeding stock and if breeders wish to discuss adding any additional breeding rights to the sale, we invite them to contact a member of the Goffs team. This new departure for Goffs only widens our offering and the introduction of the Agents Commission, which was successfully introduced for the online London Sale last summer, should also broaden the sales appeal.”

Curtain Up At Tattersalls For Popular February Fixture

NEWMARKET, UK–Here we go again. Dry January has been consigned to the books and the sales world will be back in full flow from Thursday at Park Paddocks.

The Tattersalls February Sale jumped up from one day to two five years ago and it shows no sign of reverting to its more compact format. Once withdrawals are taken into account, around 400 horses will pass through the ring, ranging from just-turned yearlings to horses in training and broodmares. They will be preceded by the TBA's annual stallion parade, featuring a dozen first- and second-season sires, on Thursday.

Shadwell continues with its reduction of stock and will sell a range of horses in and out of training through Barton Sales and New England Stud, as well as offering broodmares and yearlings through its own consignment during the opening session.

With the largest draft catalogued, Barton Sales also offers Tiger Lilly (Ire), a winning daughter of Galileo (Ire) and the only mare in the catalogue in foal to Time Test (GB) for Sir Robert Ogden, who dispersed the majority of his stock during the December Sales. The 11-year-old mare, whose half-sister Kelly Nicole (Ire) has produced the Group 2 winner Aljamaheer (Ire) by Time Test's sire Dubawi (Ire), is set to sell as lot 117.

Though lower key than the December Mares' Sale, the February Sale has however been a decent source for mares who have gone on to be stellar producers, with the dams of last year's Group/Grade 1 winners Going Global (Ire), Thundering Nights (Ire) and El Bodegon (Ire) having been bought from previous February Sales for 55,000gns, 32,000gns and 10,500gns respectively.

There is certain to be plenty of interest in Heaven's Angel (Ire) (Henrythenavigator), one of 43 lots to be offered by Godolphin. The unraced 8-year-old (lot 172) is not only a half-sister to the Oaks winner Qualify (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) but is also the sole mare in the book to be offered in foal to the French champion sire Siyouni (Fr). Further back on her page are the Classic winners Workforce (GB) (King's Best) and Brian Boru (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), while a more recent update was provided by the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who is also a full-brother to four-time Group 1 winner Best Solution (Ire).

Those looking for form horses with which to hit the ground running this all-weather season or farther afield, a last-minute update has come for Tributo (Ire) (Dragon Pulse {Ire}), who sells late on Friday as lot 445. The 4-year-old dead-heated when winning for the second time on Jan. 31 for Stuart Williams and Opulence Thoroughbreds.

The 3-year-old gelding Sydney Street (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) is another to have been in good form through the winter, winning in December and January for Hugo Palmer and Chelsea Thoroughbreds, and he comes under the hammer as lot 417 from The Castlebridge Consignment.

Trainers and breeze-up consignors who didn't quite fill their quotas from last year's yearlings sales have another 22 chances to recruit a 2-year-old at Tattersalls on Thursday. Among the juveniles on offer is a filly from the lone crop of the late Roaring Lion (lot 71), who is one of those being sold by Shadwell through New England Stud. The grey filly is out of the young Shamardal mare Raddeh (GB), a half-sister to the Listed winner and Group 1-placed Hadaatha (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). In the same draft is a 2-year-old colt by Sea The Stars (lot 80) out of the Group 2 winner Tarfasha (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), a full-brother to Listed winner Rakan (GB), and also a Dubawi colt (lot 81) out of the Listed winner Yaazy (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). His dam is a half-sister to group winners Matterhorn (Ire) (Raven's Pass) and Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}) as well as to the dam of Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}).

This time last year Britain was still in the grip of strict lockdown restrictions, meaning that the February Sale had to be held online. Figures held up remarkably well, with the median and average only marginally down on those set for 2020 and, given the extraordinary way in which most sales fared during the pandemic, it is fair to expect some decent trade across the next two days.

For breeders with mating plans still undecided, there is the chance to peruse some young stallions in advance of the proceedings getting underway, with Newsells Park Stud new boy A'Ali (Ire) kicking off a parade which will conclude with his stud-mate Without Parole (GB), whose first foals are arriving this season. Not quite an A to Z then, but between A and W, you can find Bangkok (Ire), Lope Y Fernandez (Ire), Mr Scaramanga (GB), Roseman (Ire), Ubettabelieveit (Ire, Diplomat (Ger), Legends Of War, Sergei Prokofiev, Southern Hills (Ire) and Tip Two Win (GB).

Meanwhile, the Shadwell stallions Tasleet (GB), Mohaather (GB) and Eqtidaar (Ire) have been brought in from Nunnery Stud for breeders to view close to Tattersalls at Beech House Stud.

The sale commences directly after the stallion parade at 11am, and it is worth nothing that Friday's trade gets underway earlier at 10am.

Robin Des Champs Mare Tops Tattersalls Ireland NH February Sale

Robin de Carlow (GB) (Robin des Champs {Fr}) (lot 298A), consigned by Closutton Stables, brought a sale-topping €70,000 from Simon Cox and Ballincurrig House during the Tattersalls Ireland February National Hunt Sale on Tuesday. The 9-year-old has won at the Grade 3 level over both hurdles and fences and her granddam is the Grade 1 hurdle heroine Nas Na Riogh (Ire) (Presenting {GB}).

Ballincurrig House Stud's Perfect Ball (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}) brought the next dearest amount, going for €62,000 to Kieran Shields. The yearling (lot 104) is out of the accomplished chaser/hurdler Princesse Kap (Fr) (Kapgarde {Fr}), who won three times in graded company.

Overall, the one-day sale saw 167 lots sold (60%) for a gross of €2,181,750. The average set a new record at €13,064 (+14%) and the median came in at €9,000 (-3%), the second-best median figure to date.

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “We are delighted to kick off our first sale of 2022 with another record-breaking session, following last year's record-breaking renewals of the November NH Sale and the Derby Sale that returned the highest average and median on record for any store sale.

“The February NH Sale was cancelled in 2021 due to Covid-19 and it was fantastic to stage a sale today under more 'normal' conditions and witness the fierce competition for choice foals between buyers from near and far. It is very pleasing to see the figures reach new highs, proving the February NH Sale is worth the wait.

We look forward to sponsoring the €150,000 Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) at the Dublin Racing Festival this coming weekend and catching up with many of our loyal vendors and purchasers ahead of the Derby Sale inspections commencing. Derby Sale graduates dominated at the 2021 Dublin Racing Festival with four Grade 1 winners and we cannot wait to cheer them on this weekend on what is sure to be a superb weekend of racing.”

Palace A Jewel In Cashel’s Crown

While the ever-resilient bloodstock industry barely flinched in the face of a global pandemic–the return of sky-high prices in the sales ring testament to that–the travel industry slowed to a grinding halt.

However, with the news that–whisper it–the world has fully reopened, there's never been a better time to dust off the suitcase and begin planning trips away again. And if it's Ireland you're thinking of, Tipperary might just have the answer, for waiting patiently in the starting stalls is John Magnier's most exciting new prospect.

We're not talking about the Saxon Warrior 2-year-olds burning up the gallops down the road at Ballydoyle, but rather the Cashel Palace, opening on Mar. 1 and a Palladian manor, lovingly restored and reimagined to be a 42-room hotel with a ballroom and luxury spa attached.

Under the reins of Adriaan Bartels, leader of this passion project since the first plans were laid in 2017 right up until the first guest walks through the doors in March and beyond, one can't help but think that Magnier has found a very safe pair of hands. The former general manager at two of Ireland's finest hotels, Bartels says, “This is truly a dream job. It has been fantastic to be a part of a project like this from the start, working closely with Mrs Magnier and Jerome Casey to create a hotel that is just as we want it. We're really excited to throw open the doors now and for guests to see it for themselves.

He continues, “The Cashel Palace offers something that is entirely unique as it's located between town and countryside, giving visitors the opportunity to explore both. Obviously, the thriving Thoroughbred industry on our doorstep is a great asset but Tipperary has a lot more to offer in addition. When it comes to outdoor pursuits, there is no end of spectacular scenery if hiking is your thing, and the hotel also has private fishing rights along the River Suir which guests can avail of. Irish culture runs richly throughout the county and for the history buffs, there are a number of monuments in the area which have great stories to tell.”

None more so than the Rock of Cashel, providing an epic vista from the palace grounds; the most spectacular cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland and more iconic in religious terms than even St Mark's Basilica. The cathedral, not the horse, that is, although there'll be plenty in these parts praying that he too becomes an icon.

On the subject of stallions, the relationship between Coolmore and Cashel Palace is well acknowledged and, at a level, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy “Equine Experiences” that allow them into the stud and even the hallowed training grounds of Ballydoyle.

Indeed, the hotel's association with the racing world is longstanding. In the 1980's a certain Vincent O'Brien was proprietor and the Guinness Bar became a regular haunt for racegoers to enjoy a pint of the “black stuff” on their way home. Revellers will be delighted to learn that the same bar has been restored to its former glory, alongside the original Bishop's Buttery for those with a taste for fine-dining.

“We're spoilt to be situated in Tipperary's Golden Vale which is filled with great food producers, providing the country's natural larder,” Bartels adds. “As far as possible, we'll be using local produce across all of our eateries and we hope to offer guests a wide variety of options. There'll be fine-cuisine in The Bishop's Buttery, Afternoon Tea served in the Queen Anne Room or a more casual dining experience in the already well-established Mikey Ryan's next door.”

Another trump card in the palace's armoury is undoubtedly The Spa which, as well as treatment rooms, includes an indoor/outdoor swimming pool and seaweed baths overlooking the Rock of Cashel. And as for the spa products, they are by Bamford; the creation of another great racing family who have paved the way in hospitality excellence with their growing Daylesford empire in the UK.

Of course, this isn't Magnier's first dalliance into the hotel industry either. The Sandy Lane, a jewel on the Barbadian coastline, is another under his ownership with partners Dermot Desmond and JP McManus, regularly playing host to the great and the good.

While the white sands of Barbados might be a long way from Tipperary, in the Cashel Palace you'll find a rural retreat at a standard that is synonymous with the Magnier family's way of doing things.
