Victory For Uruguay on Super Saturday

Uruguayan trainer Antonio Cintra's first season with a satellite yard in Dubai continued in successful fashion with victory for Quality Boone (Arg) (Daniel Boone {Brz}) in the Listed Al Bastikaya, giving the colt his second win at Meydan this carnival.

Race favourite Bendoog (Gun Runner) got first jump and dominated the early stages in the lead on the rail under Tadhg O'Shea, with Get Back Goldie (Goldencents) pestering him for a short while but visibly weakening on the turn. With Bendoog's advantage appearing to increase off the bend, it wasn't long before the front-runner also started to look leg-weary in the straight.

The Fawzi Nass-trained Withering (GB) (Mondialiste {Ire}) was the first to take up the challenge and as he closed on the leader, Quality Boone swept past him down the centre of the track to win by a length and a quarter, with Withering snatching second, a nose in front of Bendoog. The international flavour of the race was highlighted by runners from four different countries filling the first four places: Withering represents Bahrain, while Bendoog is trained in Dubai, and the fourth-placed Final Dance (Tur) (Declaration Of War) in Turkey.

Quality Boone triumphed on his first start at Meydan over seven furlongs on Dec. 23 and has been a model of consistency since then, finishing runner-up next time at the same trip and then taking third in the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas when stepping up to a mile last month. Carrying 10 pounds more than his northern hemisphere-bred rivals to allow for his slight age advantage, the winner will likely head next to the G2 UAE Derby on the Dubai World Cup card.

His jockey Vagner Leal said, “The horse is improving race by race and winning these races is very important for us. We know that each race is more difficult but I hope after this one he can improve and run well [in the UAE Derby].”

Leal took fifth in last week's G1 Saudi Cup aboard Aero Trem (Brz) (Shanghai Bobby), who is also trained by Cintra.

A half-brother to Argentinean Grade 1 winner Quiz Kid (Arg) (Forestry), Quality Boone is from the first crop of the Brazilian-based stallion Daniel Boone, a grandson of Wild Again who won the GI Grande Premio Francisco Eduardo de Paula Machado. He is the ninth foal and fourth winner of his unraced dam Quindici (Crafty Prospector), a half-sister to the minor stakes winners Scolara (Elusive Quality) and Platinee (Gulch). The 19-year-old Quindici also has a 2-year-old full-brother to Quality Boone named Quibbler.

Glitters To Shine On Super Saturday

Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper) may be a former G1 Queen Anne S. winner, but at age nine he has revamped himself as a Middle Eastern star, and he lines up as one of the highlight horses of Super Saturday in the G1 Jebel Hatta S. It has been almost three years since the grey visited a winner's enclosure in Europe, but in the meantime Lord Glitters has won four black-type races in the Gulf region, including last year's edition of this race, the G3 Bahrain International Trophy in November and the G2 Singspiel S. on Feb. 11.

The horse who finished second to Lord Glitters in the Bahrain International Trophy was another Royal Ascot Group 1 veteran, Charlie Appleby's 8-year-old Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}). Gelded and sent to Charlie Appleby after proving infertile, Barney Roy won this race two years ago before adding a pair of German Group 1s in the summer of 2020. He has something to prove, however, having run just twice at the back end of last season, and it could be meaningful that William Buick instead rides the same stable's Zakouski (GB) (Shamardal), who won the Listed Marshall S. at Newmarket at the end of October and was third behind Lord Glitters in the Singspiel. Zakouski also won the G2 Al Rashidiya S. over this course and distance last carnival.

Different O'Neill, Same Result in Round 3?

The $450,000 G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 is missing Grade I winner and G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow), who is bound directly for the $12-million G1 Dubai World Cup on Mar. 26, but 15 horses still line up in this traditional pointer to that 2000-metre main-track affair. In the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2, the Doug O'Neill-trained 4-year-old blitzed the field by 5 1/4 lengths, and the third- and fourth-place finishers that day, Everfast (Take Charge Indy) and For The Top (Arg) (Equal Stripes {Arg}), return over an additional 100 metres.

O'Neill does send his 'B Team' in on Saturday, as the 6-year-old gelding Appreciated (Acclamation), a veteran of the American circuit, hopes to build off of his narrow track-and-trip win in the Listed Curlin S. on Feb. 11.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum's Hypothetical (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) will aim to go one better after finishing 1 3/4 lengths behind Salute The Soldier (Ger) (Sepoy {Aus}) in the 2021 edition, while last year's third-place finisher Roman Rosso (Arg) (Roman Ruler) breaks from gate 11. Fourth in the Dubai World Cup last year, Hypothetical was unplaced in the Jan. 14 G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1. In charge from the front when wheeled back in the one-mile G3 Firebreak S. on Feb. 4, the result was much different, with the 5-year-old entire delivering a 3 1/4-length win.

Dubai City of Gold Hukum's El Dorado?

The 2410-metre G2 Dubai City Of Gold features a field of 14 led by the Owen Burrows-trained Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Prior to 2021, the Shadwell homebred was a Group 3 winner, however the full-brother to undefeated Group 1-winning miler Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) enjoyed his best season last year with a trio of Group 3 wins at 2400 metres or longer, and he was last seen in action with a 6 1/2-length victory in the Oct. 2 G3 Cumberland Lodge S. at Ascot. Saturday marks his first start outside the UK, and the bay breaks widest of all in gate 14 with Shadwell's retained jockey Jim Crowley in the irons.

It is not purely a one-horse show in the City of Gold, and Niels Petersen saddles Square De Luynes (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}), a seven-for-nine multiple Group 3 winner based in Sweden. He is aiming for his fourth-straight score after taking the Sept. 19 G3 Stockholm Cup International. Ex-Aidan O'Brien trainee Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is also making his first foray in the desert, and the G2 Curragh Cup winner will carry the colours of Mariano Commercial Ltd. and Partners after being knocked down for 78,000gns during the Tattersalls Autumn HIT Sale.

Simon and Ed Crisford's Without A Fight (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who races for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, enters on the back of a Newmarket listed victory, and the top Godolphin chance, Feb. 11 course-and-distance winner Global Storm (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), is signed on as well.

Group 1 Winners Face Off In Turf Sprint

The most intriguing race on the card is probably the G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint, where last-season Group 1 winners Emaraaty Ana (GB) (Shamardal) and A Case Of You (Ire) (Hot Streak {Ire}) face off against Meydan specialist Acklam Express (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and last-out course and distance listed winner Man Of Promise (Into Mischief).

Kevin Ryan's Emaraaty Ana and Ado McGuinnesses A Case Of You ran in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, behind Golden Pal (Uncle Mo). Emaraaty Ana, who won last year's G1 Sprint Cup S. over this six furlong trip, makes his first start since Del Mar, while A Case Of You returned a 3 1/2-length winner going six furlongs at Dundalk on Feb. 11. He won last year's G1 Prix de l'Abbaye going five furlongs.

Though he has never won at Meydan, Nigel Tinkler's Acklam Express has displayed a definite liking for the course; he finished second in last year's G2 Meydan Sprint and third in this race as well as the G1 Al Quoz Sprint. Off the board in two European starts last summer, he was second in the latest edition of the Meydan Sprint, renamed the Blue Point Sprint, on Feb. 18.

Watson Pair Loom Large In Burj Nahaar

The father/son training team of Simon and Ed Crisford send out three runners from their Dubai string on Super Saturday, and their best chance could be Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal) in the G3 Burj Nahaar going a mile on the dirt. The 5-year-old, who was twice Group 3 placed in France last summer, was a winner last out over that surface and distance in the G3 Jebel Ali Mile on Feb. 12.

Algiers will face stiff opposition, however, from the Doug Watson pair of Mubakker (Speightstown) and Golden Goal (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Shadwell's 6-year-old Mubakker goes the furthest he has in his career and comes into this off wins going six and seven furlongs on Dec. 9 and Jan. 28. Dale Brennan's 8-year-old Golden Goal was second in last year's G2 Godolphin Mile on World Cup night and won the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R1 when last seen on Jan. 14, and will be tough returning to that course and distance.

Watson, perennially one of the most powerful local stables, also has a strong chance to close out the card with a win, with Al Tariq among the favourites for the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal going six furlongs on the dirt. The 6-year-old gelding won the G3 Dubawi S. over course and distance on Jan. 21 and was third last out in the G3 Al Shindagha Sprint on Feb. 11.

Mating Plans: Haras d’Etreham

In the summer of 2020, Haras d'Etreham sold its flagship stallion, Wootton Bassett (GB), to Coolmore Stud. The son of Iffraaj (GB) is the kind of fairytale stallion story that any breeder dreams of; having stood for as low as €4,000 at Etreham in his third and fourth seasons, he stands for a career high €150,000 this year.

Since Wootton Bassett's sale, Etreham has reinvested in young sires Persian King (GB) and Hello Youmzain (Fr), both multiple Group 1 winners, and they stand on a young roster alongside Wootton Bassett's champion 3-year-old Almanzor (Fr), whose first crop are three this year, and City Light (Fr), whose first crop are yearlings.

In sharing some of Etreham's 2022 mating plans, Nicolas de Chambure noted that the stud has increased its support of its own stallions in recent seasons and will this year send each of them about 10 mares in addition to using outside proven sires.

MALAKEH (GB) (m, 7, Harbour Watch {Ire}-Marisa {Ger}, by Desert Sun {GB}), visits Almanzor (Fr)
Malakeh was a listed-winning and multiple group-placed miler, including a second in the G2 German One Thousand Guineas. Bred by Gestut Gorlsdorf, she is owned in partnership with SF Bloodstock and will be bred to Almanzor for her second covering, having already produced a “nice filly” by Hello Youmzain. “She is a strong-bodied mare who is going to suit Almanzor very well,” de Chambure said.

KOUBALIBRE (IRE) (m, 6, Galileo {Ire}-Kheleyf's Silver {Ire}, by Kheleyf), visits Siyouni (Fr)
Koubalibre is a winning half-sister to champion 2-year-old filly Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). Her first foal, a yearling colt, is by Kodiac, and she is due to Wootton Bassett this season after which she will visit Siyouni. “That cross has been very successful,” de Chambure noted of the Siyouni/Galileo pairing. “She is a good-looking mare with great strength for a daughter of Galileo.”

MISSION IMPASSIBLE (IRE) (m, 7, Galileo {Ire}-Margot Did {Ire}, by Exceed and Excel {Aus}), visits Wootton Bassett (GB)
Mission Impassible is a daughter of Group 1 winner Margot Did who was herself a listed winner and placed in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup for Mohamed Fahad Al-Attiyah and Etreham. Mission Impassible's first foal is a 2-year-old colt by Kingman with Jean-Claude Rouget, while she has a yearling colt by Almanzor, whose sire she will visit this year after foaling a Lope De Vega.

BOOS (FR) (m, 8, Dream Ahead-La Belliere {Ire}, by Kheleyf), visits Persian King
Boos ran exclusively at age two, fitting in nine starts between May and October for two wins and a second in the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte. Having produced her first foal, a Kitten's Joy filly, last year, Boos was bought by Etreham for $175,000 at Keeneland November to support Persian King in his second season. She is currently in foal to Mendelssohn. “She is a really good-looking mare with strength and quality,” said de Chambure.

STEIP AMACH (IRE) (m, 10, Vocalised-Ceist Eile {Ire}, by Noverre), visits Mehmas
Etreham and Riviera Equine purchased Steip Amach from Jim Bolger when she was four after winning the G3 Amethyst S., and she placed in the G1 Prix Rothschild and G1 Prix Jean Romanet after transferring to David Smaga. She is in foal to Wootton Bassett and will visit Mehmas, the sire of last year's Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte winner and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf runner-up Malavath (Ire), who is out of Steip Amach's half-sister Fidaaha (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). “We are using a proven cross and a stallion that should suit her very well physically,” said de Chambure.

INTERESTING (IRE) (m, 12, Raven's Pass-With Fascination, by Dayjur), visits No Nay Never
Interesting was a group performer at two and her second foal is Fast Raaj (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}), who won last year's G3 Prix Djebel and made it back-to-back Chantilly conditions wins on Tuesday. She has produced a “nice filly foal” by Hello Youmzain and visits No Nay Never. “She is suited to size, speed, and Mr. Prospector blood, so hopefully the cross will work,” de Chambure said.

PURELY PRICELESS (IRE) (m, 12, Galileo {Ire}-Peeping Fawn, by Danehill), visits Lope De Vega (Ire)
Purely Priceless is beautifully bred, being out of the excellent racemare and producer Peeping Fawn, and three of her first four foals are black-type horses. Purely Priceless is due to Almanzor and visits Lope De Vega to emulate the cross of her dual listed-winning daughter Alzire (Fr) (Shamardal).

SHADAN (FR) (m, 7, Orpen-Alatasarai {Ire}, by Giant's Causeway), visits Hello Youmzain (Fr)
Shadan was a listed-winning 3-year-old and is a half-sister to the GII Sands Point S. winner and Grade I-placed Tamahere (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). She is due to Tamahere's sire and visits Hello Youmzain. “The family needs strength and substance and can do with some precocity, so Hello Youmzain is the perfect candidate,” said de Chambure.

HIDDEN BREEZE (GB) (m, 4, Dark Angel {Ire}-Noyelles {Ire}, by Docksider), visits Kingman (GB)
The winning Hidden Breeze is a full-sister to the Group 3-winning and Group 1-placed Lily's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) from the immediate family of George Strawbridge's excellent producer In Clover (GB) (Inchinor {GB}). “Her first cover will be Kingman as she has a great mind and a lot of bone and substance,” said de Chambure. “They should compliment each other very well.”

VADSARIYA (FR) (m, 8, Exceed and Excel {Aus}-Valasyra {Fr}, by Sinndar {Ire}), visits City Light (Fr)
Vadsariya is from the Aga Khan family of G1 Prix de Diane winner Valyra (GB) (Azamour {Ire}), and was bought by Etreham for €140,000 at Arqana December in 2017. She has a yearling filly by Almanzor and visits City Light.

Giant’s Causeway Colt Smart Winner at Meydan

MONAADAH (c, 3, Giant's Causeway–Almusafa, by Haafhd {GB}), one of three horses-and now three winners–in the final crop of the legendary 'Iron Horse' Giant's Causeway, made his debut a winning one at Meydan on Thursday. Joining GIII Sam F. Davis S. hero and GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity third Classic Causeway and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile third Giant Game, the colt punched the breeze from the bell while out widest of all. Near the vanguard despite his isolation, he sidled over to keep an eye on the leaders in midpack, but was no less than three wide rounding the bend. Still idling a bit for Jim Crowley, Monaadah was popped the question leaving the bend and set sail for the front, drawing even around the 400-metre mark. He edged past Moqadar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who had taken over from the longtime pacesetter Street Mood (Street Boss) inside the 300-metre pole and surged home to win by a widening 4 1/2 lengths. Silver Jubilee (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) made up some late ground to take second, two lengths to the good of Moqadar. Street Mood hung on for fourth, another 3 1/4 lengths behind. Monaadah is the fourth foal and third winner from three to race for his two-time winning dam Almusafa. The bay mare has a juvenile colt by The Factor and a yearling filly by Dads Caps. Out of the stakes-placed Basaata (Dixieland Band), she was bred to Cat Burgler last year. This is the same family as the Hong Kong wunderkind Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro).
