Tattersalls March Online Sale Topped By No Nay Never Gelding

Hamlet (Ire) (No Nay Never) (lot 14), a 2-year-old gelding, brought a sale-topping 26,000gns during the Tattersalls March Online Sale that wrapped on Wednesday. Offered by Johnstown Stud, the son of the Group 3 Musidora S. third Pandora (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was purchased by Mount Racing's John Quinn.

Quinn commented, “He has a lovely pedigree and is a nice, scopey individual. I was able to visit where he's been prepped and was very pleased when I saw him move. The Tattersalls Online platform is a great vehicle for a sale of this type, for both buyers and vendors.”

It was a tie for second on the leaderboard, with the Johnstown Stud-consigned full-brothers Valley of Kings (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}) (lot 12) and Tudor (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) (lot 25) both hammering for 24,000gns. Fernham struck for the 2-year-old Valley of Kings, who has already been gelded. Out of the Galileo mare Tiger Lilly (Ire), herself a half-sister to the stakes winner Cold Cold Woman (GB) (Machiavellian) and a full to G1 Gold Cup third Robin Hood (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the duo's third dam is the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Arctique Royale (Ire) (Royal and Regal).

Alliance Bloodstock and Orbital Racing snapped up the 3-year-old colt, Tudor.

“Tudor has been purchased for a new syndicate, Orbital Racing,” said Alliance Bloodstock's Eimear Donnelly. “He's a lovely horse, the last of the Zoffanys and rated 77 and will suit what we are looking for. A trainer has yet to be decided.”

Matt Coleman, advisor to the complete dispersal of the late Sir Robert Ogden's stock, commented, “The Tattersalls Online platform offered us an effective way of selling these horses and we're pleased with the prices that they all made. It was a very positive experience.”

At the close of the sale, 14 lots sold (58%) of 24 offered for a gross of 137,000gns. The median was 6,500gns and the average was 9,786gns.

Classic-Winning Jockey Jimmy Lindley Passes at 86

Former top jockey Jimmy Lindley has died. He was 86. One of the top jockeys in the UK in the 1960s and 70s, Lindley rode three British Classic winners, as well as the 1960 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. winner Aggressor (GB) (Combat {GB}). He suffered from weight issues throughout his career, and periodically rode over National Hunt fences, as well. His best performance over jumps was running third aboard Retour De Falmme in the 1958 Champion Hurdle. In 1974 when 39, Lindley hung up his saddle and joined the BBC's racing team as a paddock judge. He would serve in the role for nearly 30 years.

“I worked alongside him in the paddock for the BBC for the best part of a decade,” said Lindley's colleague Jim McGrath on the Nick Luck Daily Podcast on Wednesday morning. “Jimmy was a lovely bloke, very old school, always immaculately groomed, always well-mannered, ever polite and very loyal–and in his time, of course, a first-class jockey.

“He rode some of the very good horses of his era. He won a King George, he won three Classics and he rode for Jeremy Tree.

“He famously partnered Aggressor for Towser Gosden to win the King George (in 1960) and Towser trained Charlottown (GB) (Charlottesville {GB}) [1966 Derby winner] who Jimmy rode early in his career.”

Lindley's trio of UK Classic victories were with Only For Life (GB) (Chanteur II {Fr}) and Kashmir II (Ire) (Tudor Melody {GB}) in the 1963 and 1966 2000 Guineas, respectively; and Indiana (GB) (Sayajirao {GB}) secured the St Leger with Lindley aboard in 1964. Other Classic triumphs for Lindley include a victory in the Irish Oaks in 1961 with Ambergris (Fr) (Sicambre {Fr}), and the Italian equivalent with Dolina (GB) (Saint Crespin III {GB}) in 1967. In addition, he rode Flat legend Brigadier Gerard (GB) (Queen's Hussar {GB}) on the gallops for trainer Dick Hern in the early 70s. When he retired, Lindley had accrued 882 Flat winners in Britain and 25 in the National Hunt sphere.

Added McGrath, “He had a very long history in racing, he had weight worries which forced him over hurdles and he actually finished third in the 1958 Champion Hurdle.

“He was associated with some major stables–Jeremy Tree and Guy Harwood–he was also the man who went to Kentucky to recruit Steve Cauthen for Robert Sangster. When Steve came over he was his mentor.

“He rode against Joe Mercer, Lester Piggott, Edward Hide and Scobie Breasley. He may have been old school but because of that he was always professional.

“While he may be remembered by younger followers for his work on TV, for which he had a unique style. His English grammar did not always match his high standards of observations around the paddock, but nevertheless he was well liked.”

Lindley is survived by his wife, Pat, and sons Bruce and Mark.

Record Number of Broadcasters to Show DWC Night

A record number of broadcasters will showcase the $30.5-million Dubai World Cup night card on Mar. 26. Eight of the nine races are for Thoroughbreds, anchored by the $12-million G1 Dubai World Cup Sponsored By Emirates Airline, one of six Group 1s on the evening. The presenting team at Meydan includes Nick Luck, Britney Eurton, Rishi Persad, Michelle Yu, Tom Stanley, Angus McNae and Nick Lightfoot, plus commentator Alistair Cohen. Dubai Racing Club, with its appointed distribution and production company, Racecourse Media Group (RMG), and HBA Media, will broadcast to the following regions/countries:

Selected airlines/cruiselines–Sport 24 network.
S.–Fox Sports, TVG and NYRA will broadcast the live card and NBCSN will show highlights of the card in their racing programme.

Arrests in France on Doping, Crime Charges

Twenty-three people remained in custody Tuesday night after searches took place in racing stables throughout France, Italy and Spain, according to a report in Wednesday's Jour de Galop, which reported that those held come from “every racing discipline,” who are being investigated for equine doping, organized crime, and association with criminals, the paper reports.

While the JDG listed several of those arrested, none came from the Thoroughbred discipline, but were all National Hunt or trotting trainers.

They said that the investigation has been ongoing for a year, and was launched at the initiative of the Central Service of Racing and Gaming's specialized interregional entity located in Bordeaux. And while it bears a striking resemblance to the Rossi affair just three months ago, the paper says the two are not linked.

Stephane Piallat, the head of the Central Service of Racing and Gaming, told the JDG that the raids were launched in the early morning hours Tuesday. “The operation, which took place Tuesday beginning at 6 a.m., is unprecedented in its scale. It took place in France, Spain and Italy and is the result of a one-year investigation. Several simultaneous raids were launched, with 80 policemen mobilized. There were several searches,” which yielded results, he said.

“Twenty-one people in France are in custody, and two more in Italy and Spain. The investigation centers around racing—trotting and non. It is too early to say if it also involves (other) equestrian sports. Veterinarian, pharmacists, owners, trainer, jockeys and some of their relatives were arrested.”

The JDG reports that jumps trainers David Cottin, Pascal Journiac, Lub Gabeur, and Junior Gulepa, and trotting trainer Yannick Alain Briand are among those detained. Piallat told the JDG that these cases and the arrests made among the Rossi family in their training center in Marseille in December had “nothing to do with one another,” and were the result of two separate sources.
