Shannon Arvin Discusses Upcoming Keeneland September Sale

In just five weeks, the annual Keeneland September Yearling Sale will be underway. Despite unprecedented challenges and ongoing uncertainty, it will mark the start of a marathon of events for Keeneland and its future President and CEO Shannon Arvin.

“We’ve got a long fall,” said Arvin, who now serves as Interim Head of Sales and will be officially named President-elect on September 1. “We’ve got the September Sale, the October race meet, the Breeders’ Cup that we’re so excited about and then we’ve got the November Breeding Stock sale to follow that. So we’re trying really hard to do everything in our power to continue to be able to host all of those events that are so important to the market and to the industry.”

On July 29, Arvin issued a racing and sales update that offered a glimpse into some of the protocols that would be in place next month once the yearlings enter the sales ground. She explained that Keeneland has been working closely with state and federal government officials, including representatives from Senator Mitch McConnell and Congressman Andy Barr, to seek allowance for international travelers. They’ve also been coordinating with Fasig-Tipton to ensure consistent protocols between the two sales organizations.

In addition, it was announced that anyone entering the sales ground will be required to present proof of a negative COVID-19 test completed within the last five days.

Many questions and concerns have been circling throughout the industry on the logistics of this protocol, but Arvin said that Keeneland has partnered with Wild Health to facilitate on-site testing and that she has full confidence in the company’s ability to offer efficient and accurate testing.

“We’re working really closely with Wild Health, which is based in Lexington,” said Arvin. “We’ve got the ability to test in a way that I don’t know of many other geographic locations that have that available to them. In fact, Wild Health has gone to California and other states where testing is not available and they were able to provide testing. So through that relationship, we are confident in the testing that they are providing. I think it’s really important for people to know that this is not arbitrary.”

Arvin noted that if someone is able to receive testing from other sources, they will be welcome to use those methods if more convenient. She also said that Wild Health is prepared to accommodate anyone who requires on-site testing, regardless of the number of attendees who will be taking advantage of its use.

“We have access to a sufficient number of test. Nobody will be denied entry to the sale because they can’t get access to a test,” Arvin said.

For anyone that may test positive for COVID-19, they will be required to undergo a 10-day isolation period before they can be tested again.

Arvin said, “We know the ramifications of that and we know how that could cause a lot of anxiety for people who say, ‘well, what happens if it’s a false positive?’ We are confident the tests we have are sophisticated enough. Even if somebody is asymptomatic, if they’re spreading the virus, that just heightens the chances of us ultimately being told by government officials that we’re not going to be able to continue to host the sales, the races, and the Breeders’ Cup in November. So we’ll work with people, certainly, but we’ve got to set those rules so that we can act responsibly in the marketplace and continue to stay open.”

For all attendees, masks will be required and bidding locations will be offered in several remote parts of the sales ground in an effort to increase social distancing capabilities.

“I’m not wild about wearing a mask,” said Arvin. “But it seems like it’s a small price to pay to be able to go back to business and conduct the marketplace. It’s not political to me, it’s just polite. However you feel about the virus, the virus is making decisions for us. So we just have to react in the way that has the greatest chance of getting us the result we want, which is to get back to the real world and get back to business.”

Although COVID-19 best-practice responses are subject to change in the coming weeks, Keeneland is continuing to develop protocols in conjunction with Fasig-Tipton, and Arvin said that more detailed plans are to be revealed later this week.

For buyers who are unable to attend this year’s September sale, bidding will be available online and via phone.

Keeneland will be conducting a walking video program for this year’s yearling sale. Consignors will be able to use Keeneland’s broadcast services to film Book 1 and 2 yearlings.

Arvin has been conversing with buyers to find out how they can best utilize these services.

“I’ve heard a lot of people say that they’re not comfortable buying horses off a video,” she said. “I’ve heard some people say that the video is what got them interested in the horse, then they called someone that was physically there that could inspect the horse in person to get that extra confidence you might not have in a video.”

The Keeneland sale’s team is putting together a list of agents who can serve as a source to physically inspect horses for buyers who are not able to attend.

“We certainly understand that videos don’t replace a physical inspection, but in light of where we are, it’s a really good enhancement and an opportunity for people to inspect horses.”

Arvin’s optimistic outlook remains unscathed as the calendar closes in on September.

“Back in March when all this started before my current role, I was, like a lot of people, having trouble sleeping and I was concerned. There was fear. And then at some point I think you just have to wake up and say, ‘you know what, we’ve got what we’ve got and we’re going to make the very best of it.’ It’s going to be tough, but we’re making good decisions. We are strong, we are intelligent and it’s going to be okay.”

And still, the annual anticipation of seeing that first top-class yearling enter the sales ring remains the same.

“You know, I’ve heard so many people say what a great crop it is this year,” Arvin said. “So we’re really excited about it. We are going to do everything physically and intellectually possible to facilitate a really strong marketplace.”

Grade 1-Winning Millionaire Concrete Rose To Be Offered At 2020 Keeneland November Sale

Grade 1 winner and millionaire Concrete Rose will be offered as a racing or broodmare prospect during the premier Book 1 of this year's Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, which begins Monday, Nov. 9, and follows the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland on Nov. 6-7.

Concrete Rose, a 4-year-old daughter of successful young sire Twirling Candy who has won six of seven races and earned $1,218,650, will be consigned by Lane's End, agent for co-owners Ashbrook Farm and BBN Racing.

“We're excited to offer Concrete Rose as a racing or broodmare prospect with such great companies as Lane's End and Keeneland,” Ashbrook racing manager Bo Bromagen said. “Working with them as partners gives us the greatest opportunity to showcase her.”

“Lane's End proudly welcomes Grade 1 winner Concrete Rose back to our sale consignment, this time as a racing/broodmare prospect at Keeneland November,” Lane's End director of sales Allaire Ryan said. “Concrete Rose was previously sold by Lane's End at Keeneland September in 2017 and from the start of her racing career has been a banner sale graduate for us and for our versatile resident stallion Twirling Candy. To date, she is the sire's leader of lifetime top performers with over $1.2 million in career earnings – more than Grade 1-winning sons Gift Box and Collusion Illusion.

“We are thrilled for the opportunity to highlight our November consignment with a filly of her caliber,” Ryan added. “Her combined talent, looks and breeding will make her a sought-after prospect for any top-level program.”

“Concrete Rose is a once-in-a-generation elite athlete that everyone dreams of owning,” BBN Racing founding partner Brian Klatsky said. “It's been an honor and a privilege for all of our partners at BBN Racing to be associated with her. She has already created memories of a lifetime and is not done yet.”

“She is something to have in your barn,” trainer Rusty Arnold said. “Great mind on her. She is not complicated. She is easy to train. You hear this from trainers, but she is one of those horses you just stay out of her way and she'll say 'I'll get the rest done.'”

Concrete Rose's connections had high hopes for the filly when she began her career in a maiden race at Saratoga at odds of 12-1.

“About the eighth pole, I decided she was a good horse because she was about five lengths back and she flew by the leader and galloped out pretty strong,” Arnold said. “From that day on, she trained like a special horse, and she acted like a special horse.”

Advancing to graded stakes company in her next start, Concrete Rose proved her talent with a 3-length triumph in Keeneland's Grade 2 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine.

“She's beautiful, incredibly athletic, stands over some ground,” Bromagen said. “She's well-balanced with a great shoulder and hip. But her mind really makes her stand apart. She's incredibly smart. When she progressed from her 2- to 3-year-old year, you could sense the change in her personality from doing things on talent to really taking ahold of the bit and going after them.”

Concrete Rose opened her 3-year-old campaign with a win in the G3 Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs and remained undefeated for the year. Her outstanding performance at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks Day in the G3 Edgewood, in which she defeated Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Newspaperofrecord by 3 3/4 lengths, cemented her status among the sport's most talented 3-year-old fillies on turf. She polished her resumé in her next race with a nearly 3-length victory in the $750,000 G1 Belmont Oaks Invitational, a showcase of division standouts.

That dominance continued in her next race at Saratoga, where she won the inaugural $750,000 Saratoga Oaks Invitational by 4 3/4 lengths. With the victory, the superstar captured two-thirds of the New York Racing Association's new Turf Tiara series.

“I've never seen a filly win by the margins that she did on the turf,” Arnold said. “Usually turf races are very close; the runners all stay together. Other than her Tampa race, which was coming off a layoff, she never had a close race.”

“Watch the replays of her races,” Bromagen said. “The greatest testament to her ability is what she's shown on the race track: the horses she beat and the level of competition.”

Out of the winning Powerscourt mare Solerina, Concrete Rose is from a family of successful North American and international performers. Her family includes Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand.

“Concrete Rose is an extremely accomplished racehorse – one of the best of her generation in her division – and her future is exciting whether she returns to the race track or begins her career as a broodmare,” Keeneland president-elect and interim head of sales Shannon Arvin said. “Keeneland is thrilled for the opportunity to present Concrete Rose at the November Sale with all the support a performer of her stature deserves.”

Keeneland To Require Negative COVID-19 Test Proof Upon Arrival At September Sale

Following is an open letter to the industry from Shannon Arvin, Keeneland's president-elect:

To our customers:

First, I'd like to thank everyone who has been so kind and welcoming as I transition into my new role with Keeneland. This is both a privilege and a responsibility that I do not take lightly, and I very much look forward to working alongside our team to support your needs as we move into the fall season and into the future.

Over the course of the summer, the Keeneland team has been working diligently on the operational plans for the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. From expanding our bidding opportunities to building our safety protocols, we are leveraging the full resources of the Keeneland team to deliver for our customers.

While Keeneland is excited to unveil our full portfolio of remote bidding options, we continue to work closely with state and federal government officials, including representatives of both Senator Mitch McConnell and Congressmen Andy Barr, to seek exceptions to allow international travelers to attend the September Sale. Just as we have done for 80+ years, Keeneland will exhaust every measure possible to bring the world to Keeneland.

Keeneland September COVID-19 Testing:

We have also received a number of questions regarding COVID-19 testing during the September Sale. We will be communicating final plans very soon, and are working in concert with health and government officials as well as Fasig-Tipton to deliver consistent and reliable protocols and testing. Keeneland's continued commitment to safety and our compliance with the Governor's Healthy at Work standards allow us the opportunity to operate our auctions and race meets. It is for this reason that we will require proof of a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival at the sale (which will need to have been completed within the last five days). If a participant does not have proof of a negative test, we have made arrangements for onsite testing at Keeneland. As we have all experienced, information available with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic changes frequently, and we may need to update and amend our protocols accordingly.

Keeneland Remote Bidding/Inspection Opportunities:

Whether you wish to attend in person or you find yourself unable to travel, Keeneland is providing our customers a number of ways to prepare and participate in the September Sale remotely. We strongly encourage buyers to familiarize themselves with these tools and take a few minutes to set up your account and establish credit within the Keeneland Sales Portal.

  • Online Bidding: This service will fully integrate with the live auction environment, providing live video with enhanced speed that allows for a real-time bidding experience as the sale is occurring.
  • Phone Bidding: Keeneland has expanded its existing phone bidding program to accommodate for expected increased demand in 2020.
  • Walking Videos: Keeneland's online catalog will offer the capability to showcase walking videos for any yearling selling in the September Sale, allowing buyers to access and view virtual inspections from anywhere.

The health and safety of our customers is our top priority. With that goal, Keeneland also has expanded our on-site bidding options to provide additional bidding locations beyond the sales arena and back ring to allow for further social distancing. We look forward to sharing these details with you in the coming weeks.

Before closing, and with a heavy heart, we acknowledge the passing of our own Katherine McKee on Monday. As previous manager of Keeneland's Horsemen Hospitality and most recent director of racing administration, Katherine has been a part of the Keeneland journey alongside many of you. We will always cherish the legacy of her dedication and love for horsemen and her Keeneland family. Although she battled advanced melanoma for nearly three years, many of you may have been unaware as Katherine's positive attitude, dignity and grace never wavered. She was an amazing person and friend and will be tremendously missed by all of us.

Keeneland Realigns Racing And Sales Operations For Future Growth

Keeneland announced on Thursday a strategic realignment of its core racing and sales operations to strengthen its ability to execute its mission and better serve the needs of its global clientele.

Keeneland president-elect Shannon Arvin will serve as interim head of sales while a search is conducted this fall for a new vice president of sales. Arvin, who as a partner with Stoll Keenon Ogden (SKO) has served as corporate counsel to Keeneland since 2008 and as secretary and advisory member of Keeneland's Board of Directors since 2015, was named July 2 to succeed Bill Thomason as Keeneland President and CEO upon his retirement at the end of the year.

Under the realignment, Bob Elliston will become Keeneland's vice president of racing. With more than two decades of industry leadership experience, Elliston will focus his attention on advancing Keeneland's racing product, industry-wide safety and integrity initiatives, preparations for the upcoming Breeders' Cup World Championships and expanding Keeneland's mission to grow the sport.

“The demands of these two globally significant business lines require tremendous time and resources, especially as we navigate these unprecedented times and get ready for a fall season that includes two major sales, the Fall Meet and Breeders' Cup,” Keeneland president and CEO Bill Thomason said. “We understand the uncertainty and the extraordinary challenges our customers are experiencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We want them to know that we are all in this together, and we are committed to providing the best opportunities for them to succeed in the sales ring and on the race track. This realignment enables Keeneland to deliver on this promise when our industry needs it most.”

Arvin and Elliston both bring a wealth of expertise and passion for Keeneland to their roles and they will provide a seamless transition for the Keeneland team and its customers. In her position as counsel, Arvin has worked alongside the Keeneland sales and executive staffs on operational plans for the September Yearling Sale, safety protocols, online bidding and beyond. Elliston has led racing operations since 2016, bolstering safety and welfare protocols, introducing the position of equine safety director and negotiating the return of the Breeders' Cup.

As the world's largest Thoroughbred auction company, Keeneland conducts four sales annually, which last year grossed more than $627 million and includes the prestigious September Yearling and November Breeding Stock Sales. Keeneland recently launched its online auction platform, Keeneland Digital Sales Ring.

“The Keeneland sales are an important economic engine for Keeneland and vital to the global Thoroughbred industry,” Arvin said. “Over these next few months, I look forward to working alongside Bill, listening to our customers, learning from our sales team and evaluating opportunities to further enhance Keeneland's premier sales.”

In addition to spring and fall race meet operations and the track's multimillion-dollar stakes program, Elliston will continue to oversee initiatives critical to the health of the sport such as safety and integrity innovations, elevating the racing experience for Keeneland customers and expanding outreach to grow the sport for future generations.

“As we saw during the recent Summer Meet, racing at Keeneland is second to none, and I am excited to be able to focus my attention on preparing for the Fall Meet and Breeders' Cup,” Elliston said. “I am proud of the great strides we have made, particularly in the areas of safety and fan development, and I look forward to building on the foundation we have put in place.”

Keeneland will hold its September Sale from Sept. 13-25 and Fall Meet from Oct. 2-24; Breeders' Cup returns Nov. 6-7, immediately followed by the November Sale, which begins Nov. 9.
