Horse Racing Women’s Summit Topics, Speakers Announced

The second annual Horse Racing Women's Summit, to be held Sept. 27-29 at Santa Anita, will include three panel discussions, morning and luncheon keynotes and a Friday morning workshop.

Zoe Cadman, XBTV and 1/ST RACING Host and Analyst, will serve as the emcee for the event, which will kick off with a keynote from Reagan Cannon, an international leadership speaker and coach. Following the morning keynote, leaders at the front line of industry change will gather for a discussion on the State of the Industry, moderated by Millie Ball, XBTV and 1/ST RACING simulcast host.

State of the Industry featured speakers are: Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin; horse racing reporter Britney Eurton; HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus; and equine veterinarian Casille Batten.

The second panel, titled Running the Show, will feature a conversation among industry professionals in various facets of management from racetracks across the county. Moderator Michelle Yu will guide the panelists through a discussion focused on their careers, the ins-and-outs of racetrack management, current events, and their outlook on the future.

“I am a firm believer in the philosophy that 'a rising tide raises all ships' and this sport is so much better when we are able to come together, elevate and support each other,” said Jessica Paquette, Parx Racing announcer and Running the Show panelist. “I am honored to join so many women I respect in the industry for an event that is sure to be educational and empowering.”

Other Running the Show featured speakers are: SVP and General Counsel, Sports and Entertainment at New York Racing Association Joi Garner; SVP, Operations and Administration DMTC Ann Hall; and SVP and Executive Producer for Santa Anita Amy Zimmerman.

The third panel discussion, led by FanDuel TV's Christina Blacker and titled Looking Forward, will delve into a variety of topics including diversity, mental health, the backstretch community, and how the industry can improve.

Karen Chavez, General Manager of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy, who will join the Looking Forward panel said, “Attending the HRWS Meet Up in Saratoga was an inspiring experience that showcased the power of connection and empowerment within the horse racing industry, leaving a positive and lasting impact on the women of the backstretch community. I am excited to be on a panel at the second Horse Racing Women's Summit at Santa Anita Park, and continuing to build on the momentum that began one year ago.”

Looking Forward speakers also include: trainer and equestrian Chanel Minnifield; Los Angeles Chargers CAO Catherine Iste; and Amplify Horse Racing executive director Annise Montplaisir.

Friday's hands-on workshop is designed to identify areas of focus and specific action items for the Horse Racing Women's Summit Committee in 2024.

4,194 Yearlings Catalogued for 12-Day Keeneland September Sale

Keeneland has catalogued 4,194 horses for its upcoming September Yearling Sale, which, for the third straight year, will begin with an elite two-session Book 1, followed by a two-session Book 2 from Sept. 11 through 14. The 12-session auction will include a dark day Sept. 15 and will then continue on through Sept. 23.

“The September Sale combines a deep selection of quality yearlings at all price points with a history of producing horses that excel at the highest levels, making the auction a 'must attend' event for buyers from around the world,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “Last year's September sale enjoyed a historic run with record gross sales of $418 million. We now look forward to the exciting prospects cataloged this year and to welcoming friends both old and new to Keeneland.”

Keeneland has catalogued 379 yearlings in this year's Book 1 section and sessions for the auction's first two days will begin at 1 p.m.

Recent Keeneland graduates from Book 1 include champions Echo Zulu, Elite Power and Malathaat, as well as Grade I winners American Theorem, Cave Rock, Gina Romantica, Life Is Good, Tapit Trice and Up to the Mark. Book 1 also produced 2023 Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's.

“Our sales team has worked hand in hand with consignors to intentionally construct a Book 1 designed to present the largest number of exceptional racing prospects possible to our deep buying bench,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “We feel that, similar to last year, these efforts will produce a vibrant momentum that will ripple through the entire auction.”

A total of 728 yearlings have been catalogued for Book 2 and sessions for those two days will begin at 11 a.m.

Graduates from Book 2 include 2022 champions Nest and Wonder Wheel, as well as Preakness winner Early Voting and Belmont winner Mo Donegal, along with A Mo Reay, Colonel Liam, Country Grammar, Express Train, Marketsegmentation, Olympiad, Played Hard and Practical Move.

When the auction continues after the dark day Friday, sessions will begin daily at 10 a.m.

Into its third book and beyond, Keeneland September continued to produce Grade I graduates with both this year's Derby winner Mage and Belmont winner Arcangelo acquired during Book 3.

Later books in the auction are represented by 2023 standouts like champion Forte and Grade I winner Angel of Empire from Book 4; multiple Grade I winner and $2-million earner Casa Creed from Book 5; and multiple Grade I winner and $2-million earner War Like Goddess from Book 6.

Stallions represented by yearlings in the September sale catalogue include American Pharoah, Bernardini, Blame, Cairo Prince, Candy Ride (Arg), Caravaggio, Classic Empire, Constitution, Curlin, Distorted Humor, English Channel, Flatter, Frankel (GB), Frosted, Ghostzapper, Good Magic, Gun Runner, Hard Spun, Into Mischief, Justify, Kantharos, Kingman (GB) Kitten's Joy, Not This Time, Nyquist, Practical Joke, Quality Road, Speightstown, Street Sense, Tapit, Twirling Candy, Uncle Mo, Upstart, Violence, War Front, Without Parole (GB) and Wootton Bassett (GB).

Among the stallions represented by their first crop of yearlings in the catalogue is 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic, as well as champions Game Winner, Improbable and Maximum Security; Kentucky Derby winner Country House; Preakness S. winner War of Will; Belmont S. winner Tiz the Law; and Grade I winners Echo Town, Global Campaign, Higher Power, Honor A. P., Instilled Regard, McKinzie, Promises Fulfilled, Spun to Run, Tom's d'Etat, Vekoma and Volatile.

Keeneland Fall Tickets on Sale Aug. 15

Tickets for Keeneland's upcoming Fall Meet will go on sale to the public Aug. 15 at 9 a.m. All tickets must be pre-purchased via Keeneland's official online ticket office at tickets.Keeneland.com/racing. The meet will run from Oct. 6-28.

Keeneland will award $9.05 million in purse money–a record for any racing season at the track–for 22 stakes. The meet's richest race is the $1-million GI Coolmore Turf Mile during the track's signature opening Fall Stars Weekend. Eight stakes that weekend are part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In, with winners earning automatic starting positions and free entry into the 40th Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita Park.

“Keeneland's Fall Meet is an exciting time as we showcase racing stars that are competing for berths in the Breeders' Cup and year-end honors,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “The gorgeous fall landscape, the pageantry of racing and the world-class competition all combine to make the fall an exceptionally memorable experience for our horsemen and fans.”

Fasig-Tipton, Keeneland Announce Fixed Monday-Tuesday November Dates

Starting in 2024, the Kentucky November breeding stock sales dates will be fixed on the Monday and Tuesday after the Breeders' Cup, despite the location of the event, according to a joint press release from Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland, who said that the goal was providing “stability and the strongest market possible.”

This year, the Fasig-Tipton November auction will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7, and Keeneland November will open Wednesday, Nov. 8.

Beginning in November 2024, the Fasig-Tipton November Sale will take place on the Monday following the Breeders' Cup, while the November Breeding Stock Sale at Keeneland will begin on Tuesday. The Monday/Tuesday schedule will remain in place regardless of where the Breeders' Cup is staged. The 2024 World Championships will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2, 2024, at Del Mar. Accordingly, the Fasig-Tipton November Sale will commence Monday, Nov. 4 and Keeneland November will open Tuesday, Nov. 5.

In the past few years, the sales dates have varied based on the location of the Breeders' Cup and the interruption caused by the Covid pandemic.

“Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton share a commitment to do what is best for the health and vibrancy of our industry,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “This schedule not only provides clarity, but capitalizes on the momentum from Breeders' Cup, maximizes the opportunity for international buyers to participate and creates positive energy surrounding both sales. Elite Sales co-owner Liz Crow, a member of the board of the CBA and who frequently sells mares at the two sales who have competed in the Breeders' Cup just days before, said, “When the Breeders' Cup is in Kentucky, I think Monday-Tuesday is great. When it's in California, I would prefer Tuesday-Wednesday. I found that when buyers have more time they can gather more information and do their homework, and it's less stressful on everyone, including our equine athletes, which are the most important factor here. Flying these mares home and then having them sell right off the plane is harsh and not very safe for them. I have had a few instances of horses colicking, and it's hard to get them rehydrated after a hard race like the Breeders' Cup. The buyers are rushed through the process when you have the Breeders' Cup in California. I am very happy that we're not doing Sunday any more. And I am happy the sales companies worked together and were able to figure something out this year before the entry deadline.”
